Stepping on the accelerator/gas pedal when an engine starts is probably just about the worst thing anyone could do for an engine be that Petrol or Diesel, as the engine is still cold and won't have any oil circulation at the top end straight away, so could cause damage to the engine, the same as over revving a cold engine can.
Yeah, never give it throttle when an engine starts especially when it’s trying to start when I see people do that here on RU-vid. I’m thinking you are out of your.🤬 mine! Never ever do that!
Crazy how newer diesel with remote start don’t have this issue. My 2013 LML would start right up unplugged in that same type of weather. It would start rough for like 3-4 seconds and after that it’s good 🤷♂️
It’s modern common rail injection systems that make cold starts so much better now. Without using the block heater and with a grid heater delete I’ve started my 2014 Cummins down to 5°F or so and it starts up on the first or second revolution.
2020 diesel sprinter om642 motor started up just fine in -20f last winter. The battery had to be heated up but the motor had no issues. Mobil 1 is the best for cold weather since their oils contain the least waxes they have a super low pour point.
Please just cycle the grid heater a time or two and depress the accelerator pedal slightly and hold it about 1/4 down or less if you have governor spring upgrade, then crank, the 12v will fire right up hold it at 7 or 800 rpms till she has enough heat to run on her and maintain rpms. No need to stress the truck
Dude, go with 10wt/40 in the coldest three months of the winter. You won't need the grid heater, and you can either all the way down to the minus teens.
How long does it usually take to start on freezing cold mornings when its not been plugged in? Does it take longer when it hasn't been used for several days?
I dont know if you care anymore but i daily drive a 96 (same engine) and it gets below zero here. Even if i dont drive it over the weekend, it always starts right up after cycling the grid heater twice (turn the key and a "wait to start light comes on for a few seconds".).
Starts a lot quicker than my neighbors Duramax at forty five degrees. Lots of times he has to wait a couple of hours for the temperature outside to warm up 🤣
Seems to me like american cars dont like cold weather or this car is no good. My Audi from 2011 starts only a few seconds slower in that temperature than summer heat. Only difference is a bit more preheat delay and you can hear it turning a tiny bit slower and also a bit more vibration but roughly as easy to start..
Firstly, this truck is more than 12 years older than your Audi. Secondly, this is a diesel engine. Newer diesels start way easier in comparison to this old war horse but are far less reliable.
@karaffens I assure you it is completely healthy. Possibly, his grid heater isn't working the best or at all. I have 2 trucks with the same engine, and they start the exact same way when it's cold. -1 is a bit colder than normal, but if it was 20 degrees, it would crack of like nothing. Also, these engines have governor springs in the pump, so it doesn't rev up immediately upon the first pop. They run slow right off the bat, unlike newer diesels that jump right to 1,500 rpms when cold.
Like to see your Tesla do that out there huh? Probably ain’t even any charging stations close enough to get one out there where you’re at I know the closest charging station I’ve seen was over two hours away from my house. Your Tesla model x do that?
The cold weather isn't gone yet! Stay protected when the mercury falls: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DwG3sWDK5SI.htmlsi=kxfc4h5IWshDETZ3
I don't get it. Yes, they will start cold. But listen to that poor thing. Not to mention that starter is probably hot enough to cook on by now. You're shortening the life of your truck. Just plug it in.
