I'm a native Indonesian speaker and watching the ChatGPT writes in Bahasa Indonesia, it is acceptable but not to the level of writing that is made by native Indonesian speakers. Still feel a little bit ackward but maybe it can get better in the following years. Thanks for the video, by the way, it really gives an insight into what ChatGPT can do. 😃

I wouldn't be so sure. In Lithuanian, for example, it makes a lot of grammar mistakes.

That's interesting to hear but not too surprising. The quality of the writing it produces is probably proportional to the amount of content already on the internet in that language. From what I've seen so far the English grammar is pretty excellent.

No. It’s lazy (and possibly not 100% accurate). Have all human teachers perished? 🤨

This is a great video full of ideas I can’t wait to incorporate into my language learning. Another great more casual/day to day use of chat gpt for language practice is just to ask it to speak with you in your target language. I found the first few times I experimented with chat gpt and language acquisition, I was just asking it to translate, to correct sentences, to write bodies of text in my target language similar to what is recommended in this video. But then I just asked it to hold a conversation with me in my TL. I then asked it to correct any mistakes I made as we spoke. This to me, as a learner who goes mostly off of free online resources, was such a huge help. I now have a free, expert language tutor, who will talk to me about whatever I want (and is an expert on those topics too), and who can simplify, contextualise or elaborate on any of the language they use. It’s like the perfect foreign language pen pal. It’s patient, can emphasise slang, formality and convey different language style. For practice in language output, especially for less confident learners, chat gpt is the perfect sandbox - no matter what level you’re at. Just make sure you’re staying on top of pronunciation through other resources because it’s only written text!

It can't be too long before they add some voice recognition and speech capabilites to Chat GPT. Then it will be a 24/7 language partner.

I'm doing the same thing with learning the Cebuano (Bisaya) language. There are very few written articles written in Cebuano so I have chatGPT write them for me on topics I'm interested in. I will then have my tutor read them in Cebuano and I'll record it so I can listen to this comprehensible input a few more times.

That's an excellent method. I have done similar things in the past. At the moment I'm getting Japanese articles, studying them on LingQ and using the text-to-speech function on VEED to get an mp3. I then listen back to the mp3s later. Text-to-speech technology is getting pretty impressive, though I'm not sure if it would be much help to you with Cebuano.

There are a bunch of youtube videos about getting started with Chat GPT. It's easy to sign up. I've also found a few new ways to use it for language learning. I may make a new video about them.

thanks for the tips! ive spent a time writing prompts there and i agree it writes awesome articles about many different areas. i also feel that i can explore even more its potential. i explored some text formats and the only dissapoiting one is the poems; in english, it is perfect (it makes a poem about anything u want), although it is a mess in another languages... like, the rhyme part doest work.

I wonder if a year from now we will be able to tell human content from AI content just by reading a few sentences?

The stories are pretty fun, but at some point the content may get quite boring: the texts are all very formulaic. For example, they mostly start with "Once there was...", then a paragraph or two later "One day", ... "eventually". Often if the story features a sad storyline, "she couldn't help but feel", etc. Ask it to write an article, and it will always use "in a surprise turn of events" or something like this. So at first it seems fun and original -- and of course you can give more prompts to have the language modified, and equally the repetition is great for low-level learners -- but there"s something I don't like about it. That said, being able to personalise the content is great.

In my previous message, I was talking about an article written from scratch. I got it to shorten an article I fed it the other week, yet while it summarised the main points quite well, it also cut some of the most interesting quotes (all quotes, in fact) and thought-provoking content, as well as the personality I imagine was intended by the original author. So I think it would be better to chop and adapt articles manually.

I agree that it seems ideal for writing content for lower level students. There are a lot of annoying points to it. This morning I was trying to get it to translate a long text in English into Japanese and it went on strike every time it came across a swear word.

Not any language, it's very bad in Arabic

It is quite surprising for me to read that because arabic is a so widespread language. Maybe it can be very soon trained enough to be a useful tool.

As a native Russian speaker I do agree that not all languages are equally good with chat GPT. I tried to create texts in Russian and I noticed mistakes. It looked more like a mechanical translation from English.
