I loooove my Castle Arts pencils. While I have my Prismacolors and Polychromos and Derwents, I find myself not wanting to experiment or using them very conservatively due to cost. I got into coloring for stress relieving. And while yes, it feels amazing to finish a picture with polys and prismas and have it look amazing, I'm not completing a masterpiece every night. Some nights I want to grab an old Johanna Basford book and just relax and color leaves and flowers with no pressure. And my 120 set of Castle Arts has done that for me. I prefer them over Black Widows and that's saying a lot. The colors are amazing while not perfect. They're smooth and creamy, they laydown pigment with little effort. But the blending is where they really shine. The fact that they're so affordable and come in such gorgeous colors has made those mindless coloring nights a lot of fun again. I cam experiment with color combinations, not be afraid to mess up or waste some pencil lead. I just am very grateful to Castle Arts pencils. And the fact that they come in a zippered case with individual slots? Saves me $30 right off the bat. I love them and they are fun to use. I won't be using them in my really nice books but for PDFs and my $12 books I can get from Amazon, heck yeah they're perfect. I strongly believe that financials should never prevent someone from starting or enjoying a hobby.
Have you used the pastel ones? I want to try them but here’s many others around at the lower end of the price range which for the amount of pastel use is potentially ok. I have some Polychromos and Prismacolors but not in pastel colours as they aren’t huge sets. I like both but find Polychromos better for detail and Prismacolor for blending. I’m very conflicted and can’t watch anymore videos 😂
I have the castle arts 120 set … they are beautiful pencils. They are creamy and smooth… they layer and blend wonderfully, and the didn’t cost me an arm and a leg. I watched this video a while back and because I color in coloring books from Amazon using Amazon paper I almost didn’t but these pencils … as the comment was made… “if you Color in Amazon coloring books you aren’t going to be happy”. That comment in this video compelled me to leave this comment… I was not disappointed… in fact I am thrilled with how they Color! I get so tired of every time watching a pencil review it’s more a comparison to Prismacolor or polychromos instead of a review of the pencils being used… I just don’t want anyone to feel after seeing this “review” that they shouldn’t give castle arts a try… even if they are using coloring books with “Amazon paper”…. As they say … opinions are like a$$holes… everyone has one.
Hi Jenn! In this video review, I was just mentioning my opinion on how I felt the pencils worked in different books/paper. Yes, everyone has an opinion. I like my Castle Art pencils, but prefer to use them on different paper and other books rather than the Amazon books. Please don't get me wrong. I LOVE MY AMAZON PRINTED BOOKS! I just prefer other pencils in those books rather than using the Castle Arts. Of course, that is just my opinion and someone else may feel differently. It's the same idea as someone may absolutely love a particular colored pencil because they are more comfortable with the way they feel, but someone else may not. I love my Prismacolors, but others love Polychromos. Everyone is different and prefers different things. Those that have watched my videos for a long time now, know that I love Amazon printed books. I have a video coming very soon where I test the new Arrtx pencils in several different books including an Amazon printed books. I always purchase Amazon printed books because, in some cases, that is the only way to support our wonderful artists who bring us their beautiful artwork to color. Please note that this video is also from a year and a half ago. Happy coloring and have a wonderful day.

Beautiful. I just purchased these pencils. I love my Prisma color pencils but I wanted to try another brand of pencil before I decide to purchase the 150 pack of of Prismacolor. Thank you for the review on the Castle Arts.
I love my Castle Pencils. They are harder than Arteza, my other set, but they layer very nice. I use them with both Arteza and Prismacolor. They don't blend like the Arteza but they layer so well I don't mind. I also think they play well with other pencils like Crayola and other off brands so you can work them into a beginner stash.
I have found your videos very helpful, You’ve got yourself a new subscriber! I want to improve my coloring skills. And I just upgraded from crayola to this set. I’m excited to test them out more.
I have the prisma 150, the castle 120 and the basics 72 and I tent to gravitate more to my basics and castle. I state the prismas being off center so often for the price I expect more
I gave in and ordered these. I am so tired of breakage, and not having sharp pencils. Plus the 120 set with more colors won't need so much blending. Figured I'd better do it now while Amazon is giving 25% off including the case. I tried using vaseline on Amazon paper. Yes my picture looks better, but the paper apsorbs grease.
FYI - On the other side of the Universal Color System booklet it lists all their colors by color family, name, and number across all their product lines. They also have 6 or 7 sets of 24 pencils that are "themed" to certain artists (Monet) or purpose (Portraits, Landscapes).
Hi Pamela. I'm totally loving your channel. So many helpful and informative videos have been heaven sent for a newbie like me. I was wondering if maybe you could do a review or resource guide video all about the best places to find printable PDF coloring pages. You mentioned Deborah Muller etsy shop in this video and I'd love to find more PDF resources. Thanks so much.
I'd love to see a video on resources as well. I pick up tidbits here and there from videos and watcher comments but it would be nice to see your personal favourites all together in one video. Thanks for all you share with us.
When you advise that these pencils do not perform as well on Amazon coloring books, does that mean that Amazon publishes some coloring books of their own and would only be using Amazon paper in their own books, or would they be using their Amazon paper in Johanna's "World of Flowers" and other books of artists with whom we are familiar? I am really a beginner, and don't really know how things work. I thought your presentation and review was really well done, and I am really looking forward to seeing your upcoming video on how these pencils should be arranged in the proper color order. I am totally clueless!
I would bet that she meant any Amazon brand coloring books. Those would be the only ones made through their publishers. Amazon wouldn't publish their own versions of books. They'd have their own line of coloring books, branded from them. But you wouldn't buy a book from Johanna from Amazon and have it be any other quality than anywhere else. If there are any difference it's due to the publisher or any different runs or editions of that book.
Some of the books by different artists, like the Jade Summer books, I believe are printed by Amazon when you order them. They are not Amazon brand, just printed on Amazon paper, which is a lower quality paper. Johanna Basford and many other popular artists’ books are not printed on demand when you buy them, but print on their own paper and Amazon sells and distributes them this way.
Just ordered these today. Have mostly Johanna’s books and am so happy that they work well in these books. I also have prisma’s and polychromos. But wanted to try a cheaper brand. Thanks for the great video’s and learning lots.
I swatch all my colors out. This is the easiest way to know what colors you're choosing, especially with budget-friendly colored pencils or any other medium you choose to use.
Thank you for sharing These are on sale right now! I have watched so many videos haha I may be closer to finalizing my color pencils lol... Im on a budget with a large family so I just want to make a good choice ....
This helped me make my decision with the sale options I found online. Thank you so much, Pamela! 🤗🤍🎨✨I just purchased the Castle Arts 120 ct. colored pencils as well as the pastel set of 48 ct. colored pencils. In one video, I heard you talk about creating your own planner... I've not seen you post any content for bullet journaling-- is that something you've thought about sharing in the future?
I hope you love your new pencils. You may mean my Coloring Page Planner. It’s a workbook to help you plan out your coloring pages. It’s available in my Etsy shop.
Hi, I really liked the colour order you arranged the Arteza pencils along with the swatching video. I was wondering if you have done a similar video for the C.A. pencils or have a swatch card to show which order you arranged them in please ? 😁
Hi, I just found your channel because of this Castle Art review. I do want to use coloring books that are on Amazon paper. What colored pencils then do you recommend for coloring right in coloring books which is often that Amazon paper?
@@PamelasPassionforPencils This is a good example of what you mean by "coloring style". I had a terrible time with Prismacolor on Createspace (Amazon) paper. Smeared all over the place, especially if you had any grayscale. I actually went online to watch tutorials on how to color on this paper, and while the tips did work, it kind of made coloring unpleasant for me because it seemed like a lot of effort. It's a shame since there are so many talented artists that publish their work this way. And no, I'm not going to buy a book and then turn around and try to photocopy the pictures on different paper. It depends on how you color and what effects you want. Also Prismacolor is available as open stock, so if they wanted, they could just buy a few colors to try out before investing in a larger set. 😊
Not sure what you mean by “Amazon paper”?? I’ve got lots of colouring books of Amazon. All really good quality with great paper and various types of paper… all been great. So I’m confused by what you mean? They are also not Amazon brand……….
If they aren’t Amazon brand they’ll be the same as if you bought in a high street shop, just sold by Amazon so whatever paper the publisher used. I think Amazon sell some own brand which is probably on cheap paper
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm just beginning to use my Castle Arts Pencils... Could you please tell me the colors you used on the 1st flower? I only heard one color mentioned Jade Green.. not the name of the other two pencils. Thank you.
This video was filmed back in September of 2020. I honestly do not remember the colors I used. I went back and rewatched that portion of the video to see and apparently, since this was just a pencil review and testing rather than a tutorial, I didn't mention it. In my more recent videos, I always try to mention the colors I'm using.
Hi Pamela , Which pencil is a better choice, Kalour or Castle Art? I am torn between the two. I already have Prisma pencils and some other budget ones but want to add to my collection:) Thanks , Judy
@@PamelasPassionforPencils Yes, the Kalour set you reviewed. Are Castle Art and Kalour both wax based? Just want the one with the best color pigment and blending and layering ability:)
The most common solvents I've seen used for any pencil colors are rubbing alcohol, zest it pencil blend, and very conservative applications of some odorless mineral spirits. Just be mindful of how much you use because it can bleed through the paper, warp the paper, or cause wax feathering.
I haven't done that for this set. I'm not sure really how many people would be interested in me putting this set into color family order now that there are also the Golds.
Can u tell me where I can find these pencils in color family order? I jus got these. Was jus wondering cuz that would save me time lol. I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me.
Hi Pamela. I am debating between. the castle arts watercolor pencil and Faber castell albrecht Durer (between those 2 brands), can you tell me which is better? I read Castle arts is wax based, so it’s softer and creamier, I believe. Not sure about Faber castell. Could you advise me which I should buy? I am sure you have Faber castel in your collection as well. I don’t want to buy one and regret it later. Thank you.
I am sorry but I don't own either one of these particular sets. The Castle Art colored pencils you're seeing in this video are different than their watercolor pencils.
@@PamelasPassionforPencils that’s ok. Thanks for responding. I purchased both. Faber Castel is better actually, more vivid and easier to blend. But money wise, Castle arts has more pencils and color variety for the price.
I cannot stand this video, if this is what a good review looks like then just why? Maybe because I don't have any branded color pencils, it takes so long because I don't understand the struggles ppl have with drawing with this medium. It just seems like a long ass video about nothing and then the coloring at the end. . .
I am sorry you didn't enjoy this video. Maybe you should just make your way to another one or even film your own perfect review that would be much more to your standards. I try to be very through in my videos and this is an Adult Coloring channel which is the entire purpose of the coloring at the end of the video. I am sure there are plenty of other videos on RU-vid about the Castle Art pencils for you to view rather than leaving nasty comments on mine. I hope your days get better very soon.
This is the paper I use, Chloe. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I have been sick, but finally feeling better and catching up on comments now. amzn.to/3IIHzJV
