(121) Experiment: Removing superglue from locks

About a month ago (May 23rd?) Lockpicking Patrolman did a livestream where he demonstrated the old but unfortunately common vandalism tactic of applying superglue to a lock to disable it (this was distressingly common as part of various scams and criminal schemes in New York City in the bad old days, and still happens occasionally though less commonly as a prelude to far worse crimes now). Anyway, I was inspired by LPP's experiment and some suggestions from the commenters (thank you #LockForce folks) to try an experiment that was both slightly more realistic and would pit some competing theories against each other.
SInce we are still largely in lockdown mode here at Nite0wl Labs I ordered several identical deadbolts, a package of single use KrazyGlue styrettes, and some 'dental syringes' (already having a ready supply of suitable solvents and lock mounts on hand). The experimental setup was simple, take two deadbolts and inject as close to 1/2 of a single styrette of superglue into the keyway of each as possible, then leave the glue to cure for roughly 6 hours (to make sure it is well hardened as it usually is when it is confronted by a locksmith). Unfortunately I decided to apply the glue while the deadbolts were sitting on the packaging rather than after I had installed them on the test mount which resulted in some performance issues but did not seriously affect the validity of the tests).
And yes, I realize this method is not exactly easy to carry around in your tool bag on the off chance you get a lockout call like this, but it is useful information and might help someone avoid entirely destroying a lock unnecessarily.

Hi great video m8. I've experience this just recently by a spiteful person who put glue inside my 6 pin euro lock for uvpc door, fortunately for me I've two entrances to my property. I had to use both acetone and the blow torch method. I removed the barrel from inside and stood it up I used the blowtorch first fully turned up pointing straight into keyhole, keep it on until u see dripping flames coming out it'll all come out in one go at a certain temp and will be a flame so make sure you do this in a safe place that is not flammable, takes about 2-3 min full flame after that u can insert the key and turn the lock but still has alot of stick for key to insert and get out so I then left the barrel to soak inside acetone for an hr, afterwards the lock was fully clear of any glue. My lock had dry superglue in it for about 3 week. Unfortunately for anyone with one entrance to property they'd have to drill the holding screw out hope this helps ppl and hope nobody has to go through the experience of a spiteful individual doing what happened to me.

Great video on its own and also as a follow up to LPL’s Saturday live stream. Thanks for doing this! 😊

A great demonstration Nite Owl. I suppose it would be a common prank at schools /colleges to have someone superglue a lock to keep a teacher out. That's a handy curved syringe. Thanks for this video, have a good holiday weekend, cheers

Nice Video. I would think you could use a Lab style (Hamilton metal hub) needle to get all the to the back of the lock. Again with the heat, should be ok on the current Schlage, but you may find plastic in some smartkey cores. I would think krazy glue would be disastrous on a snark key system.

Awesome video with some great tips!! I think there are some nail polish removers that are acetone.

Most are, and usually diluted enough that they won't damage the paint on the door much.

Great video!! This seems like a great idea, just that it would be a bit of an issue for the finish of the door and hardware since Acetone could corrode that stuff :( Awesome video anyway!

I just wonder whether if you pour like regular glue (not super glue from glue sticks, but the smaller stuff) in the key hole will that also lock up the key hole or not?

Awesome results and a great video!! I left the cylinder I used in my video sitting in a jar full of acetone and haven’t messed with it since that day. Maybe time to pull it out lol!

My psychically disturbed neighbor put glue in my keyhole. Why didn't the emergency key and lock specialist tell me how to dissolve and remove the glue? Is it true that the glue destroyed the lock cylinder?

Where did you get that thing that you put the acetone into the lock
@WesGunter

Great video Nite! Loctite also makes a solvent product called SF 768 that will dissolve cured cyanoacrylate (super glue). It is probably way more expensive than Acetone. The acetone looked like it worked well!

It certainly got the job done. It is important to remove the lock from the door ASAP once it is un stuck though, the acetone can sometimes leave glue residue that can re-cure as the acetone evaporates out.
@Nite0wl
@Nite0wl 4 года назад
Yeah, eapecially compared to a 32oz can of acetome that retails for under $10, and even BSI's 1oz Un-Cure super glue unbonder goes for about $8.

I Liquid Nail my locks' keyholes to prevent lock picking. . . . . . I have electronic combo locks. Just don't want the backup keyhole :) Question is can you remove Liquid Nail from the keyhole? If yes, I'll need to look at something else, like physically soldering the pins in the core.
@Nite0wl
@Nite0wl 3 года назад
I just hope the batteries or electronics never die on you. The mechanical backup is there for a reason, and if the cylinder has been disabled you are looking at a very expensive lockout call.

You should have put the acetone in the one you toasted as well see if it’s recoverable
@anthonynewton8726
@anthonynewton8726 Год назад
I used both blowtorch first then soak in acetone my barrel was recoverable but had to remove first wouldn't recommend trying blowtorch while lock is still in the door as the superglue come out aflame as a liquid and would set both wood and upvc door on fire.
