The angled glass in front of the lamps is probably dichroic mirror that only reflects the visible light, but passes the infrared heat energy. Also used in some projectors. It protects the ends of the plastic fibres from excessive heat. They used to do really complex pattern animators for the fiber optic signs. A modern cold white LED lamp can make older displays really pop.

I saw a display similar to this built into a custom van. Remember those custom vans of the late 1970s that were painted on the outside with fantastic airbrushed artwork and decked out inside like a love machine with purple velvet walls and a bed, etc. I was at a car show in Houston back then and inside there was a custom van like that, very fancy, made for show, a custom van equivalent to a show car. Inside it had the ultra-plush interior and hanging on the wall was a display similar to this that feature fireworks. I was about the size of a framed velvet Elvis poster, maybe 2' x 1'. It seemed like it had several designs built in to it, one of which was these twinkling fireworks. I remember the fading out firework effect being slightly more sophisticated than this one you have here, but that could just be my fuzzy memory of something I saw 40 years ago or it could be because I saw that one in person whereas this one is not in person. I've never seen anything else like that one I saw in the van, other than this one you are showing me here, and searching for that one I saw is how I found this video, so obviously this type of artwork can make a lasting impression.

That is insane, he must've had some good coffee at the time. I bought a cheap fiber optic lamp that was made the same way from a Chinese restaurant in 96 or so. It had a small bundle all going to different sections of a flower, like the pedals and leafs. One day it started making a horrible grinding noise, so I took it apart and found a little color wheel on a motor. So it was a really hokey version of that masterpiece that you have there. It also had a clock on the bottom, kinda wish I still had it.
@tntamusements
@tntamusements 7 лет назад
Yes...I also opened one of those lamps when the bulb burned out! There was actually a spare inside the base to put in! I kept it in my younger daughters room for a night light--until the motor went.

Very nice, Todd! This type of fiber optic work is almost a lost art anymore. There was a lot of it produced in the 80s for signage and clocks, but now you don't see much of it anymore. I would almost wonder if the original artist who produced this had done other smaller commercial works before producing this large one-off for the casino.

Few things looks as beautiful as those glowing fiber ends, and also look at the colorful effects and varying intensities that the color wheel creates...I'm not confident that LEDs could compete in terms of beauty and varied effects.
