Dark rock on light sand with a black background does Malawi fish justice. It's how I do my tanks. I have to echo IFG however. This scape looks nice, but is suited for mbuna more than anything. Your fish will need additional space that a sparsely decorated tank provides. I'd suggest going back and getting a monster 50 pounder and build around that but go light overall. Once your fish get larger and problems arise, you'll have a hell of a time removing bullied/bully fish.

I have a tough time leaving anything alone for more than a week or two, so I'm sure I'll be changing it up before long. I don't know if hey had any pieces that large. I grabbed some bigger ones that didn't require me digging down to the bottom of a huge pile in 90 degree heat. I might go back on a cooler day and check though. I have a bunch of open room on each side but guess it's important to find a balance between feeling like it's empty and not crowding it too much. I really appreciate the feedback, please keep it coming.

Fantastic video I love the way you recorded all the changes it shows the before and after very clearly. Have to say the new scape looks very natural and looks great with the black background.

Hello Steve. Overseas is looking at you Your RU-vid chanel is one of my subscription here. I'm a newbie in cichlids (some monthes). I like (love) the simplicity of this tank. My next (bigger than my actual 450 liters) should look like yours I think. I don't understand the thumbs down here. Please, thumb down authors, post a comment to say why. Maybe you are jealous ? I have been searching for Carderock or Basalt rock for my 125 Cichlid aquarium here in Texas for a while now. Still haven't located either. Landscaping places, stone and rock yards.....nothing. Frustrated, as I am going for that 'grey scale' look too, with sand and a black painted background. Recommendations? Awesome tank.

Thanks Chad. I have mixed feelings about 3D backgrounds. I like the look but I don't know how I would work one around or behind my overflow box so I don't have much of a choice there. Plus I may upgrade to a bigger tank at some point.

Starting a Cichlid tank this week here in the Philippines. This rock set up looks just great, however, I'm sorta stuck on a Large Clamshell (8") I found in Calendaria Quezon Province along with one Large Coral piece and other cool Conch looking shells. I've been going back and forth on lights but in the after shot of this video I'm using two 36" LEDs from eBay: pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=301604827562&globalID=EBAY-US They have some actinic lights even in the normal mode, hence the blues.

Good point about creating a recessive grey/black backdrop to highlight the fish. Less is more. Look at the ridiculous Dramatic Aquatics videos - a British aquarium store with bright backgrounds and carnival lights for each tank. Added plastic flowers complete the circus landscape. No accounting for bad taste.

love the new look & love how you made this video very straight forward. Question: i've thought of doing the same with those type of rocks? but when you bought them were they clean? like do they have any chemicals or something or a mineral that they might not be used to?
@StevePolandAquatics
@StevePolandAquatics 9 лет назад
Thanks. When I bought them they were dusty but not particularly dirty. They had been sitting outside at a landscaping retailer. I soaked them in hot water and wiped them down before I put them in the tank. Some people say to boil your rocks but I've heard of people having their rocks explode while boiling because of trapped air pockets and I'm not messing around with that.
@eve7568

Steve Poland Cichlids lmao that sounds scary if they were to pop. Oh okay thanks. I always assumed rocks from places not from fish store might harm the fish.. i'll prob do that.
@StevePolandAquatics
@StevePolandAquatics 9 лет назад
There are tests you can do to rocks to make sure they're aquarium safe. But in general you can save a lot of money because the markup on rocks at a fish store is usually at least several dollars per pound over what you would pay elsewhere.
