Great video! I'd add that you can set up a 125 on a budget if you look hard enough :) I got mine used off craigslist for $100 dollars and the cost of a few tubes of silicone to reseal it (maybe $20). I built a DIY stand for around $35 and a bit of paint, used a $10 bag of pool filter sand for substrate, and got a 4' led light (not an aquarium light) for $12. I added a few sponge filters (3 of them for around $15 total), a few pieces of driftwood (probably $60 total), some plants from the other tanks, and I was done. The most expensive thing about that tank is the discus that are in it. I run a linear piston pump in my fish room, so I didn't need to buy an air pump for my sponge filters, but that wouldn't add much to the cost. So the grand total was $252 to get the whole thing up and running.

he is right , even my 55gal shocked me with how much i was spending on lights, decorations and fish along with the HOB filter and the chemicals to get started , i did use pool sand so that was cheap . i ended up over 500$ when it was done and the aquarium itself was given to me

Excellent video. Glad you mentioned quarantine tanks. They're so important. But just in case anyone ends up needing it, there are pond formulas of several common aquarium medications that will be more economical for large tanks like this than the standard aquarium versions. Just figured I'd share in case it helps anyone. Hopefully it won't be needed. 😊

We've had our 125g for about 3 or so months now. Originally, it was to only be an upgrade for our rescued red eared slider to have more room to grow, but we decided to chance it and add some fish to the mix; 2 plecos, about a dozen tetras, 3 gold panda mollies, and a couple opaline gouramis. In 3 months, the slider has shown no aggression towards the fish (which is pretty uncharacteristic). Oddly enough, we've unintentionally increased the amount of fish, as one of the mollies birthed a few; out of the 6 we could originally count, there were 4 that survived and are now larger than the tetras. It's a bizarre mix, but somehow they're all getting along.

Nice video. Of course I enjoyed it. I had as my first tank a 150 gallon 4 ft tank. Then I saw your video about the showdown between the 125 and 150 and I had to get me a 125. Just got it and can’t wait to set it up. I’ve been buying piece by piece for it. I could never get my big box store to get the 125 gallon tank kits in. So I bought one used. But the catch is the seal was bad. Only paid 100 dollars for tank and stand. Resold the tank as a reptile tank and kept the stand. Had to pay $450 for a tank. But at least I have piece of mind about the seal!

Thank You, Prime Time Aquatics, for making common sense and realistic points throughout this upload. I especially like the advice about water changes and buckets. I often do 50% or more wc every 2-3 weeks on all 7 of my tanks and I'm sure the time it'll take to refill a 125 afterward would be a bit time consuming for most...not for me, of course. Like most fish keepers with multi-tank syndrome, I just can't wait for my first 125 or greater.

I just bought a 125 kit brand new and i was gonna go salt, but im thinking more fresh water now due to insane cost of live rock. Even though the bottom of this tank is tampered glass I'm afraid to put heavy wood or solid rocks inside it. However after seeing this video that hardscape looks solid and really heavy so I guess I can do it.

I still do buckets with all my bigger tanks lol as long as the tank isn't OVER stocked and you aren't over feeding, they don't require that big of water changes.. also depending how frequently you want to do it and your filter set-up. And if it's planted or not. some of mine simply get topped off for the most part

Look at saltwater tanks. The water parameters are immensely more important than freshwater yet the goal is to essentially never do water changes.

It’s so much more fun keeping larger fishtanks. I have a 190g and a 125g. Both have 2 canister filters and i do wc’s twice a week. You need to be on top of maintenance and be aware not to disturb benificial bacteria in too many places at once. But it’s worth it, it gives you crystal clear tanks full of healthy fish to enjoy, the behavior is more natural, bigger tanks are much more stable and sustainable. I also consider it a big advantage to select all your equipment yourself, rather than in a set. You will adapt them much better to your type of tank.

I have my 55g Shrimp tank and a 75g Angel tank, so starting a 120g Discus tank is sounding really good right now. I like the 125 but the 6 foot length is a deal breaker, I'd like to get the120g 48x24x24 because there is no place with a 6 foot wall without a window or a door where I would want a tank. I like to have approx 4:1 tank to fish width and height with 10:1 length, to give then room to move and keeps bullying to a minimum, so 48x24x24 is really close to ideal minimum for Discus.

I have my sights on a 125 gallon. For now was thinking of using 2 AquaClear 110's and a few sponge filters. I also have a AquaClear 70 that I could use in addition if need be. Do you think that is sufficient? Maybe one day I cam get a fx6 or fx4. Is fx6 to much for a 125?

Good video, same taste as me. I love Geophagus species, Thoricthys species and others rarely seen like C. Robertsoni. I’m lucky and near I’d guess the best FW store in US (Uncle Ned’s Fish Factory). The owner has forgot more about fish then most experts know and carries many rare fish. My thing was breeding West African cichlids-Chromidotilapia Guntheri ‘Loenberghi’, Henichromis Guinea 2, Pelvicachromis Taeniatus (several color morohs), Steatocranus species etc..Most are aggressive except the dwarfs but I’d love a nice 6 foot West African setup. I’m on a couple large FB forums and see the same trash Malawi cichlids (hybrids etc) or common CA/SA fish. People need to research to see all the cool fish out there.

🤔 The 75 gallon and the 125 gallon aquarium aquarium’s have become my favorite sizes to keep. I don’t really have a bunch of room to give to my hobby and these two size tanks do what I need then to do for the Native American fish as well as the Central / South American cichlids I keep. They are also great savor a de sized saltwater reef aquariums especially if you go with the smaller and more peaceful species. All in all these are perfect sized aquariums for smaller to mid sized room.

I would love to have a large tank but due to my health and bank account I have to stay on the smaller size my biggest being a 20 gallon tall if you had to pick one tank that is still in the small range as the best to maintain and stock what would it be? Surprised no one mentioned sump filters. I started my 125 with a canister, but it was to heavy for me to maintain. I now have a 29 gal sump under the 125 with 2 overflows. I think the maintenance is easier though I do have to change the filter bags every couple of days. I save the (12) bags in a bucket of bleach which I put into the clothes washer when I run out. I have 10 inch Africans (no mbuna or peacocks) so I need to change as much water as possible every week, but they are healthy and breed. I have a pump that I lower into the tank which drains into the tub or out of doors in the summer. Would love another 125 with community fish, but my husband isn't on board yet. I don't see any cons in this size tank except for initial cost and possibly water bills.

Or something else? Sorry man. I seen people putting 1 fx6 or 2 fx4's. Or one of those plus a hob. I'm sure there's a number of combos. Or maybe 1 fx4 with 1 aquaclear 110? Haha thanks
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 года назад
I think all the options you listed can work - the FX6, or an FX4 with HOB, or 2 FX4s. Perfectly acceptable. The nice thing about having two smaller filters is if one goes down the other one is still ok.

I live in a 1bdrm apartment on the second floor. With the weight of a 125 gallon, do I need to worry of the floors giving in? I currently have a 90 gallon in that apartment. I want to upgrade to a 125G and get rid of the 90G, if it’s not going to cave the floor in my apartment in? Also i read on one if the commenters talking about putting supports in the middle of the tank and front and back with wood beams; 2x4 or whatever that was? Could you please educate me on that or send me a link? I don’t use any support for my current 90G
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 4 года назад
As for your floors - I'm not sure. I guess it depends on how well they are made? The center brace was in regard to my stands, but they don't need them because the cross beams for the top tank are 2x8s with 2x6 fully supported uprights.

6' and 20" tall?...I like that size. Might not be perfect for a planted tank being a little narrow,but still good enough for that. I haven't got the price list on Amano's extra wide tanks,but I get the feeling its astronomical in price compared to the 125 at Petco....

Both the double stands have center supports in the back and the bottom tank has center supports in both the front and back. I used 2x8s for the cross beams for the top 125s to combat any potential issues. :-)

The only thing better than a 6' tank is an 8' tank :D Mine is a 96.5"x16.5"x16.5" rimless and it just feels so right. Previous to this one I had a 6' 125 and it was nice but I found the height was more of a detriment than anything else... these tanks get TALL when you have it on high enough stand to fit an FX6 underneath. I'm an average height guy with longer than average arms and with my 125 I found I was always needing a 1-step stool to comfortably reach deep into the back of the tank.
