I would recommend pretty much every rider spends at least a season on a 125. The habits learned on the little bike will make you a better rider.

I get that, but have to disagree. If I’m not racing a class like XC3 nooo way- and I only weigh 155lbs lol. 250B on a yz125 after supermini was a nightmare. They got to take it easy some areas, while I was tapped out the entire race. Couldn’t imagine 250A. It was a good transition bike for me to the yz250 for sure tho. I just wouldn’t want to race on it again

Personal experience, my laptimes ended up about the same between my 125 and 250. My entrance speed was way better on my 125 but my exit speed was better on my 250. The more chances I had to keep the momentum up on the 125 is where it shined over my 250 and the precision I could keep with the bike being more nimble and smoother, but on a track with all those variables mixed in, they equal your speed on either bike lol.

As a55yo C rider I recently stepped down to a 125. I've found that I am accustomed to lugging the bike and using the power to get me through stuff. The 125 needs to be down shifted before I encounter a situation which I'm trying to learn. It has plenty of power just not at low rpms. It will definitely improve my abilities.

Been off a bike for many years just started getting back on when my kids wanted to ride they got 125 I got a 250 and forgot how much they want to yank your arms off. 🤯 I dropped down to a 125 and I'm having fun again. Lighter more nimble but like you said got to keep the rpms up. I understand clutch and throttle control but haven't ridden dirt bikes since I was a teenager. I'm finding myself getting bored with riding streets and having friends who trail ride, I find myself wanting a dirt bike. Is the YZ250X a good idea for me? I don't do wheelies and haven't even really practiced riding wheelies. Just don't want a bike that is going to be intimidating. What are your thoughts?
@NoahClarkFitness

Hey man! Yeah I don’t think either way would be too bad. Seems like you could have fun with either. The 250 may help you just to be a little more forgiving where the 125 will make you have good technique, clutch control, and make you carry your speed (not that you can’t already do those things, you will just improve because the 125 doesn’t have the power to make up for any mistakes). Hope that helps!

I've found that my 250 is less tiring. The 125 requires such a high level of precision to go fast that I find it's more taxing. On the 125 you're constantly clutching and shifting where as with a 250 you can get by with very little clutch work and about half the shifts.

Oh, the 250 is spicy, but as a first bike, I'd rather avoid it. Get good on something smaller, and when that no longer scares you while you're riding the nuts off it, you can move up. Anyone who tells you that a 250 2 stroke MX bike won't scare you as a beginner - is lying to you outright (or they own a clapped out clunker that doesn't make a third of the power it's supposed to)
