12A Rotary Powered, Mazda 323 (Familia/GLC) In Brisbane, Australia

In August of 2018 I was in Brisbane Australia on a sunny Sunday with nothing to do so went to the Real Steal and Chrome car show at Yatala Drive In. Lots of old-school US and Australian cars, as well as a few old rotary-powered Mazdas. I was super excited when I saw this 323 as I'm yet to see even one of these in Japan, and it turned out the owner was aware of the WasabiCars channel!

that interior takes me back to a simpler time, a bright yellow 323 kinda time in the very early 00's... we had one in the family and always found it just a little odd but quite cool.

Sad that enthusiastic cars last and ordinary cars don't. Even the next "best-selling" BD Familia are rare to see in Japan today.

Nice. The interior brings back memories for me. Mine was an orange 🍊 1979 model 5 door with the rectangular headlights and the plastic "corners" on the bumpers. A damn good first car 😉

I haven't seen one of these in years, used to hate the look of them mostly - front's still hit n miss depending on how it's all been modded. This one is cleaned up well. Remember when I was like 6 or 7ish, getting a lift home from school with like 6 other kids in the car and the driver manually working out if she needed to get petrol cz the petrol gauge had stopped working. The random stuff we remember haha. Always a good to see your vids Dan, hope you well.

Soon as i saw the Car thumbnail, I had a feeling it was built or inspired by how the Kiwis styled these 323 Hatchbacks/Whaletail wagons in the 90s.....and then 03:17 said it all lol

Yeah, man. They're all disappearing. (Well, except for Jamboree weekend in Brisbane where I saw more old Mazdas than I have ever seen in Japan ever)

I'm not surprised, but I've seen you rambling about this a lot of times. I particularly remember you complain you've only seen one Mazda Lantis (probably 2 or 3 by now) so the old 323 must be a real unicorn in Japan!

they are called the MR90 or the Baby Boomer (different rear end) here in Indonesia With the wagon version being called the Vantrend that in 1996 got power steering

cool :). im not all that familiar with the third gen familias, but i did a bunch of research on the 4th gen ones when i was making one in 3d. despite the 4gen being very popular in the 80s in japan, being modded and all that stuff, they basically dont exist over there anymore, a large portion of pictures i was using as a refference were the pics from the 80s from minkara lol...so this being even older, it really doesnt suprises me haha

That Lil Mazda is pretty sweet, it would be amazing with a flush fitment, but being fair I'd totally rock it as it is. As for it being rare I'm not really surprised, Mazda seem to be the less common platform in a sea of Nissan/Dattys and Toyotas, so if you add to that already weak position the fact that this era 323 is pretty rare, there you have it😅

Its funny how all these boring, run of the mill cars are cool now. Is it just because we don't see them any more? Or is it that they were always cool but we didn't notice? Or is it just nostalgia? I dunno, but there are some great cars in this vid.

It's the run of the mill cars that I like the most. :) I think it's the "familiarity breeds contempt" thing. The less we see, the more interesting. And, as you say, nostalgia, too

From what I’ve heard these rusted really badly, even worse than most Japanese cars. Probably explains why there’s only one that I know of left in Ireland (and maybe another abandoned in a field). I’m not sure if I like the front of these but the proportions are really nice

These were definitely sold in Japan, and in large numbers. But, the Japanese love to crush and export their old cars. It's the same story with countless other cars.

We had a 2 door with pin stripes and though it was slower than the Mazda 1300 on which it is based, it had the most beautiful sounding motor. Shame this one is still not original. Sacrilege really.

RX-5/121's? Yuck! Always thought the 323's were dog ugly but knew they were very similar to the 808/RX3's so certainly was a redeeming feature. There were a few rotarised versions getting around my way (South Australia) in the late 90's. Unfortunate about the music I really wanted to hear the rest of the story about that one. Big fan of the later GTX/R 323 Familia's with the BP. Not to be rude but this W.A.N.G. business is a bunch of overcooked bullshit and I demand you cease it IMMEDIATELY for the good of the viewership. What next, start talking about quirks and features?
