12ft (4m) RC USS Tennessee with her Tug, Dock and sinking River Burnett movie 2

This is my Radio Controlled 1/48 scale Battleship, USS Tennessee BB43. She is 12ft / 4m long and I am still adding things to it. I had to build its own trailer to transport and store. She is launched and retrieved the same as a normal boat and I built her own WWII dock to park it when on the water. Together with her own Tug and a Collier cargo ship 'River Burnett' to escort, also both in 1/48 scale. River Burnett is designed to sink, then I can raise it again with a switch on on the transmitter.
The working search lights on Tennessee are surefire tactical torch heads, which puts a good solid beam of light across the water when night sailing. Besides the navigation lights she also has superstructure illumination lights together with working street lamps on the dock. All four motors are water cooled with cooling fans throughout the ship and directed out the funnel. She has her own sound system which I can play 6 different pre-recorded sounds. This includes ship announcements, 1940s music and a call to battle stations with an anti air battle. It also has pre recorded morse code that is displayed from signal lamps near the bridge. I can rotate the main gun turrets and I am about to build the firing mechanism of flash and smoke. The sound for the guns is already in the sound system. She is close to 100% scale, however not 100%, as I added things like a bow thruster etc. All of the other actions you can see in the movie.
The Tennessee is made from Timber, sheet metal, white metal, fiberglass, bits of my kids toys, anything that I could lay my hands on really. You are only limited by your imagination.
Some of the photos have been taken by a really talented photographer at the club. River Burnett was built by a very experienced model craftsman. I just gave it a birthday and added some TLC
She normally sails at the Sunshine Coast Model Boat Club, Sunshine Coast Australia.

I hope you enjoy watching as much as I have enjoyed building her.

The ship is fantastic. The tug amazing. The freighter superb. I was sad to see it sink, and then I thought the stern seems to be rising, but nah, I'm imagining it. Then you raise her! Wow, hats off to you Aussie's!! Thank you for a wonderful video from the R/C guys here in the U.S.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that you are or were an engineer by trade. If not you should have been. Very impressive work and attention to detail. Love the different Morse codes and the scale dock. Plus the sinking ship that recovers on it’s own is just amazing. I know how much work went into all of this and I still can’t believe it. Absolutely top notch work and amazing craftsmanship.

Absolutely fantastic; I really liked the freighter, it's the style I like best, kind of like a coastal steamer of the early to middle 1900's. FYI the Tennessee was refitted with the 14 inch barrels of the USS Arizona so when used in the Normandy invasion it was said it was the Arizona getting her licks in. Same in the Pacific in 1945 against the Japanese. Love your models. CT, USA.

Looks more like a WW1/1910s 'Hog Islander'. Basically the predecessor of the Liberty/Victory ships, the ships were mass produced but often times before WW1 and by one or two companies with very minor alterations, like different masts, slightly longer than the other, that kind of stuff.

Actually it was Nevada that got the 14"/45 gun barrels from Arizona. Tennessee used 14"/50 guns, longer barrels, higher velocity, more punch.
@raybame5816
@raybame5816 2 года назад
@@USSEnterpriseA1701 You are correct. In my zeal over his model, I confused my facts. The Nevada did not have those guns at Normandy, in late '44 she received the A's reconditioned barrels for use on Okinawa and Iwo Jima, better yet.

Mate, If the Collier that attended the USS Tennessee, why is it flying the Domestic flag of Australia? If the Collier was supposed to be a Royal Australian Naval Vessel in WW2, she would have been flying the White Ensign, which was also the Flag of the Royal Navy. That ensign consisted of a Red Cross of St. George, on a white background, with a Union Jack in the upper left hand quadrant. We changed our Naval Ensign If Collier were just ss Collier or Mv Collier, she would have been flying the Merchant Navy Flag, which would have consisted of a Blue flag, with the Union Jack in the upper left hand quadrant and some British/Australian Merchant vessels had a Red Flag with the Union Jack in the upper right quadrant. BTW; love your model of the USS Tennessee. Well done!

One video on RU-vid that humbled me: a modeler living in Japan made a 3 foot long INCREDIBLE replica of the USS Arizona. I don't know how to look up the video because RU-vid can bring up results with titles that aren't in English. Even with the camera 10 inches away, it was difficult to tell if this was a model or a view of an actual ship if one didn't know the Arizona had been sunk. What blew me away is that although it was mostly a kit, he hand made half of the parts for it!

If real ships had those bilge pumps none would ever sink.
@Elkarlo77
@Elkarlo77 3 года назад
The unsealed Hole needs only to be bigger than the Bilgepump outlet. Titanic for example had 400 t/h pumping capacity, even when she had 10 times the capacity, she took 22.000 T/h water then she was flodded and only took 6.000 T/h per hour in the secound hour. So theoretically she could have stayed afloat with 4.000 t/h much longer. The problem was that she only displaced 53.000 Tons, a lot of the third class windows were below the waterline and not closed and the seals started to leak or the doors to the cabines etc. So after she settled in the water with the forward compartments sealed, first she could hold the incomming water, but it increased as more seales broke. Thats the other Problem, when you have a waterflow, it will grow. But maybe she would stayed long enough afloat for the rescue Ships to arrive. But Windows below the Waterline, she was doomed.

As I recall she was in Buckner Bay, Okinawa on VJ Day (the day Japan surrendered) Aug 14, 1945. The surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay was held on September 2, 1945 but Aug 14 is the actual day the Japanese surrendered. USS Pennsylvania was torpedoed in Buckner Bay on Aug 12, 1945 with Admiral Oldendorf aboard. He had just transferred his flag from Tennessee to Pennsylvania on the morning of Aug 12 and Pennsylvania was torpedoed that evening around sunset. On Aug 13, 1945, Oldendorf transferred his flag back to Tennessee from Pennsylvania. At that time the old battleships were designated under Battleship Squadron 1. By 22 September Tennessee was stationed at Wakayama, Honshu Japan accepting the surrender of Vice Admiral Hoka and Rear Admiral Yofi. Hope the info helps.

Definitely with such a Behemoth you cannot spontaneously decide to go for a casual rc model boat plunge at the nearby lake. I guess this takes quite a bit of preparation and at least two or four helping hands of BOF rc model boat enthusiasts. So I assume the video with the floating harbour and quayside scenery was shot in the realm of a model boating club. I wonder, how long does it take you and your friends to stage all this? Btw. as of model boat display bonanza in a port like scenery we have a marvellous event here in Germany which takes place usually in September at the end of the open air bathing season in a swimming pool. You may have heard about it. In Google or YT just enter the two words *Subwaterfilm Aukrug* as a search query.

Although keeping even just the 3 models in the video operational is almost an occupation in itself, it's like a house, always something to do. Currently working on an RC 3 masted 1800's corvette sailing ship. Its a whole new education learning the rigging. I have been blessed with a smart and beautiful wife that.........likes model boats! So clearly I had no choice but the marry the girl.
