Nice video ... the BMS is meant to get hot ...don't worry about it ..... Balancing only starts when fully charged , the BMS slightly discharges the cell which is full first so the others can catch up ... but this current is very small about 30mA , cells don't get out of step much ... so they must all be at the same level before you connect the BMS , so they start off balanced ... They often don't come from the factory at same charge level ... leave the cells in parallel for a day , then put in series and connect BMS

I imagine you get a ton of questions from people delving into this area but hoped you could enlighten me if you have time. I created a 3S24P 18650 battery to be used as a driveway wall lamp. I used a Daly 20A BMS but did not realize it was either that small nor using a non-standard BMS cable. As a result and in line with one of your other videos where you stated no negative repercussions exist for hooking multiple BMSs to a battery, I added a second 3S BMS cable. Attaching the first to the B0 (most negative) and on the positive side of each series set each subsequent cable (B1-B3 , Matching the Daly only ensuring I used separate a separate location on the nickel plated fuse sheets). Once complete I tested voltages reflecting a 4v jump per connection telling me it was connected properly. I then attempted to use the BG-8S attached to the newly created battery but it never powers on the unit. I assumed maybe the device was faulty and tested a prefab 3S commercial battery and it powered on properly and showed the state of each cell. What else could I be missing as I have run out of options. Sorry for the lengthy post but I wanted to be as concise as possible. Thank you for your time and your videos I find them very helpful.

I was recently looking for a 50A 4s LifePO4 BMS and I saw these on Amazon, if I remember correctly. I never buy into waterproofing claims when it comes to PCBs. I steered away from these BMS because it made no sense to waterproof the BMS as all it does is cover it up and remove the BMS from the heat sink (in this case the ambient air). The case will cause the BMS to heat up abnormally high as the heat can't be adequately dissipated by into the air. Another item to clarify for the audience is that not all BMS have a balancing function. There is no point in balancing during discharge (with a non-regenerative balancer) and especially with LiFePO4 cells (as the cells will remain within a narrow range between 3.2V and 3.4V for a large portion of charge-discharge cycle) as all it does is reduce the useable energy of the battery; that is why most cheap BMS that have balancing function begin top balancing only when the individual cell voltage reaches 3.6V.

Got one of these a few weeks ago and didn't know it did any sort of active balancing til the other day. Never charged it up to 3.6v per cell for any balancing to take place (my assumption), but a week later of monitoring the new battery pack I find that the cells are 0.004 max difference. These metallic red covered BMS/balancers are great. I just finished building a clone of that battery pack tonight but used an HX-4S-F100A, which I'm now totally regretting.

@bkay042
@bkay042 5 лет назад
@@LFPSair Have you confirmed this personally as well? I fast charged the pack to confirm it worked (one cell group begins to go up rapidly at 13.9v) and it shut it off. I was using an ISDT hobby charger though, so I can't confirm what Will showed (not borking his solar charge controller). I'd like to run one on my big LIFEPO4 pack in the back of my truck but it's even more sensitive due to used cells. I'd rather not fry my charge controller, and with my ISDT charger it completely halts all charging. Will's experience was different, and I can't understand how.
@LFPSair
@LFPSair 5 лет назад
I believed it does the top balancing at 3.6v only. I also noticed that it is very close to the cutoff voltage too. My charger will cycle between on and off once every a few minutes. Now I only do the bottom balancing manually, and shut off the charge at about 3.4v

@Originalsunrunner20

Would be great to see maybe a video taking the cheap Miady cells and replacing the BMS or combining them in a new box with a new BMS.

So the Miady batteries really overheat during load to the point they melted and weren't safe. I think the cells are okay but thinking of making a better battery from them with a new BMS and some cooling. I need to be able to drawn 35amps continuously peek but generally 5-20amp.

thanks for this great tutorial, i know there is a difference between chargers for Li-ion and LiFePo, so my question: is there a difference between bms for the Li-ion and LiFePo batteries ???

I assume the leads from the MPPT controller goes directly on the battery? The P1 line from the BMS goes to the neg on the inverter and the pos from the inverter goes on positive terminal on the battery right?

I have wondered about the BMS, disconnecting from the controller, I thought about putting a resistor bypassing the BMS to controller, like 100watt, 10 ohm or something, just enough to keep some power on the controller, but in most cases, the controller is cheaper than the battery, and your house, if it is burned from over charged lithium batteries,

Will thanks for your efforts in getting all of us on board. Question I have set up a 4s12V Daly BMS on 4 -280Ah cells. BMS will not let the attached inverter function. Do I need to “jump start” the BMS with a short burst of charge current from a 12V charger?

Hi Will, I love watching your videos, you make it fun to learn. I'm planning to build a battery with Lithium Polymer 3,7 volts cells (4 in series), they are rated 300 watts each. First question; what kind of power (amp hour) would that give me ? And second question; could I use this BMS 12 v 60 amp for that type of cells? I'm planning to connect an inverter for a 1500 watts induction stove. If this is too small, is there a stronger one that you would recommend ? Thanks.

Thanks for another great video Will, do you think this BMS is safe enough for standalone use - or would you recommend a victron battery protect as an additional safety measure? My charging source will be my alternator using the 20A renogy DC to DC you reviewed, I presume this will do a good job to prevent overcharging as well

I love adding the battery protect to everything. It's great for over current protection as well. Sell worth the money and a high quality little device. But this BMS can be use by itself. I'm still using it and it works well so far. I'm trying to find a way to kill it and haven't succeeded haha

@@WillProwse This is a great find Will, I just wish they made something similar with more conservative setpoints... 3v at the low end, 3.5 at the high end... something optimized for max cycles

I am running two 24 volt LiFePo4 battery banks with two 320amp BMS’. We have it up and running. The only thing of concern is on the Ant BMS app one bank shows different SOC than the other. Like 93% and other bank might show like 26% or 37% SOC. Both banks showing around same voltage. I’m running solar charging. System seems to operating ok. Don

Re: BMS choices: QUESTION: Is that a common pole BMS, or A separate pole BMS. I like the idea of this way of protecting battery as I study more for my 1st ever DIY 24v LifePO4 project. I need to study my BMS options a little more before purchase that part. I think I will go with the Daly brand S8 ...8 connection to each 3.2v battery cell.

tanks for this video! it almost what I wanna do to changing my offgrid system. but I have some questions: 1. the charge controller are 12/24V and don't goes mad trying to guess with the 2 wires BMS? tracer empever manual say first battery then solar panels. 2. maybe a better option is the BMS with 3 wires. common, charge from mppt and discharge batteries. my guess is the 2 wires BMS is right to electric bikes. they only charge or discharge using it. 3. connect inverter direct to the battery work fine IF have some protection for over discharge. manufacturers love to stop em at 10.5 to dristroy the battery before disconnect. 4. I don't need any protection for zero degree. never happen here in tropics :D 5. afer some months everything gos on fire or still working nice ? keep learning, testing and increasing your evolution. it's the way in life!

IMPORTANT QUESTION: I like that BMS Daly you show. looks like heavy duty. So I used link and they said Common Port and Separate Port. Which one are you using and what is the different ? Thanks very much ! Looks forward to your answer so I can buy right one. Question 2: Do you think the BMS 100 Amp Black and blue wire is bigger Than the 60-80 Amp BMS ? because I want to make 12v with that LifePo4 3.2v 50amp Blue batteries. Want to start the Honda Odyssey minivan v6 3.6L or Toyota Camry v6. Thanks

Will, it seems to me that the batt. bank you built could output way more than 60 amps. Let's say you wanted to run a larger device (say that heat gun at 120 amps). Could you use a larger BMS to run it? I suppose if you did this too long or too often, the battery would degrade, but what do you think for occasional short time use - say 10 minutes at a time?

Hey, buddy, I'm a little confused as to using 2 balancers - one is (the red one) attached to the battery wall, and another one is the display monitoring each individual cell (the black one). Can the black one be used instead of the red one or do they perform differnt functions and are used for different purposes? Or are they the same except for the black one simply has a display for visual monitoring?

Hi will, i have had several inverters blow up on me recently, the reason being my bms cuts off before my panels and my controller spikes up to 24 volts when my battery cuts off. My inverter is only 12v. Any suggestion for a 14v cutoff for my inverter?
