My first job was at a local game store way back in 1996. Interestingly we had a section called “German strategy games” all of which were printed in German and we supplied a printout of English translation rules to customers. For me working off and on at the store over the course of the next 15ish years the biggest gateway game I would recommend was Carcassonne.
Anyone knows any good games for larger groups? Most games seems to focus on 1-4 players. If you are like eight people and dont want to play random card games, is there any good board games for us?
Congrats on 50k! Very well deserved. For those searching for games on your list - I would like to point out that the “Las Vegas” edition you show is out of print. The new version, with slightly tweaked gameplay, is “Las Vegas Royale” and is currently available. Still as enjoyable, perhaps more so, than the original.
🎉Congrats on 50k subs! 🎉 A few follow up questions: Regarding Time Line, what player count would you say is most fun? Also, with Unlock, is there a set you’d recommend starting with? And another great video- thanks!
Thank you! For timeline, 3-5 is where I love it most, but others good. For Unlock...hard to say for sure, there are so many. Tonipals Treasure is one of my favorite, but I don't know if that's the best to start it. I'd probably recommend House on the Hill.
I think TTR and Carcassonne are obvious choices, but perhaps so obvious that they don't require mention. I'd add Tiny Epic Galaxies, Small World, Space Base, and Stone Age. None of them is particularly difficult to teach, the play is relatively quick, and there is enough depth to reward continuing play.
I recently got to play Trekking the World on BGA and I never gave any of those games a second thought because I think Ticket to Ride is a very enjoyable game almost 20 years later. But I played this and was really really impressed with it. It's still very simple but it just has a lot of dopamine hits while you are racing around trying to claim these big point tickets that are open information and available to all players. You also collect cubes that represent different souvenir types which could be big bonus at the end of the game. Highly recommend if you have or want newer gamers and have already shown them TTR :)
Great list! Seconding the call for a next step list. Would also say that Sushi Go Party (or just plain Sushi Go) have been massively successful as a gateway game for me. Same with Dixit, though I think that's true of most party games.
First of all I absolutely enjoy this channel! My question is what is a good beginner campaign game? Plenty of videos on campaign games but none that say just for starting a campaign game. Thank you for your time and recommendations
Never understood why the Las Vegas expansion never came out in North America... I had to import it. I think the only version of Las Vegas you can get now is the Las Vegas Royale version.
Congratulations on the 50K, well deserved!!! ;) Seriously the 1st RU-vid game content creator I subscribed too and very proud to be a patreon supporter!!! Keep it up, you rock!!!!!
One suggestion: Add a scaling level of whether it's better to play w/ people knowing each others or it works well for strangers. It's awkward when u say some perfect keyword that others don't know in Codename. Good recommandations btw. I love Vegas.
Of all of these, I'd say Parks has worked for me. And for a larger group, Code Names, hands down. Cascadia seemed to be a little more of a jump for beginners. My City came later for my new to gaming friends, but I think that had more to do with timing on my part. Though there are some who just struggle with polynomial. Worker placement seems to go over well. Put a piece there, get something. New to gaming folks really like it, that feeling of accomplishment right off the bat.
Gotta try the expansion for parks! I liked parks but after playing the expansion I’ll never play without it and really elevated the game on several levels! Haven’t tried the 2nd expansion yet but just picked it up. Congrats on the 50k!
Games that have been great among my non-gamer friends include Century: Spice Road, Bang! the Dice Game, and Kodachi. Feed the Kraken did surprisingly well: I brought it to a mandatory fun day at work, and my coworkers proceeded to play it daily for the following week.
Great recommendations. I recently picked up My City as I had heard good things. My wife and I are seasoned gamers, but absolutely are loving this one! It perfectly fits the evening gaming slot once our baby has gone to bed. Whether we have time for 1 20 min game or a whole chapter of 3 games in an hour, it is just excellent. We are playing 2 player so plan on handing it on to another couple to play it after we finish :) great bang for buck here!
Canvas is my go-to gateway - it's SO good. My other two main gateways are Tiny Towns and the Crew - which I've gotten several coworkers completely hooked on :)
