For me, seeing Terranigma's ending come together for the first time took my breath away. The way every big theme and little moment in the game built up to that bittersweet gut punch of a payoff was like seeing the developers pull off this amazing magic trick right before my eyes. It affected me way more than I was ready for. It's not just my favorite ending on this console, but of all time.
I always loved the ending of Illusion of Gaia. Bittersweet romantic. Also Secret of Evermore and Terranigma of course. Also Super Mario World 2 for that ridiculously awesome final boss fight! DKC2 and F-Zero were worth finishing because of the awesome end credits soundtracks......
@@InjusticeHater The buildup to that scene was also done very well. You know what's going to happen, and you don't want to progress, but you must. Ouch.
I was 14 years old when I played Terranigma, I'm 35 now and after all these years I get goosebumps and the ocasional teary eye when I remember the story and ending of that game, It's one of those endings that get's stuck with you.
Not only do you keep your channel fresh with these oddball lists (most relaxing/best ending etc), I really like the reasons for each. Also learned new stuff for games you've already talked about that interest me that I haven't gotten to yet. Skip option a nice touch as well (even if I'll forget the spoiler when I get to the game) Thanks for all your hard work! See you (on RU-vid) on Thursday.
I imagine you had a ton of work to make that one with the timestamps so I took my time to at least leave comment besides the thumbs up. You're very good at scripting your videos and at chosing the images. Thank you for all the effort you put on it.
I was playing it, I got to the castle where there is a witch or something like that, but I lost my progress and gave up. I want to play it again, but my inspiration is gone :(
When I was a young teen in the 90s I was sorely determined to get all of those endings. Mind you I had NO idea how many there were or how to do it. There was no internet for me to look at etc. I just played the fuck out of it. I didnt get all of them until I actually had internet. I'll love that game forever. I just bought a DS and the game so I can play it again.
great vid, as usual! The ending in Chrono Trigger with the staff as the characters also appears in SaGa Frontier on the PS1 if you beat the game with all the playable characters. That's a game from Square Soft and, again, from the PS1, so if you enjoyed the idea there, maybe you'll enjoy it in another nice game too
omg dude, I watched the Grumps play Super Metroid. I didn't know the ending and neither did they, so I was just as emotional and surprised as they were. A+ ending.
I got A Link To The Past when I was 8. It took me YEARS to pass that game (on several replays I always got stuck on the ice palace. It took me years to figure out you had to pull the tongue on a statue) and when I finally beat it, the ending was the most satisfying thing.
"as is being custom here, the music induces some bigtime goosebumps" -- man, you couldn't be more right. Something about the SNES that hasn't really been replicated very often is how the ending themes really hit the old onion-chopping notes :) I adore your videos, and the little touch with the arrows pointing out skip points was bloody genius!
FF6 has one of my favorite game endings of all time but I couldn't think of what you you'd put for #1 and when it came up - yep. Super Metroid. If there were ever a game that could potentially be the greatest game of all time on any console, PC, or anything, it could be that. An absolute master class in game design thats essentially never been topped.
For LttP, when I was a kid I cried as the flute boy "died" in the dark world after granting his final request. Then I cried again when you see him alive and well, reunited with his father during the ending.
The song "To Far Away Times" on Chrono Trigger never leaves an eye dry in me. It's so hauntingly beautiful that it sheds every tear around every gamer who completes it.
I always make sure to play Earthbound atleast once a year, and July is usually my time to do that. The video got me hyped to play it once again, let's go.
With Odio being the Thanos of Square Enix here, seriously he is the Most powerful square Enix villain ever created and the JRPG's most powerful misanthropist.
Great list my friend. I love your channel. Another satisfying and unexpected is Pilotowings (Spoiler alert) After you rescued those weird people, they treat you like a hero and you walk between soldiers and your old instructors, (and the music, oh men I love it) in the end you're face to face with big Al. Was amazing.
I was getting nervous when you kept going without mentioning earthbound... I'm so glad it made your #2. I love the entire game, but that ending had such an impact in contrast to all the silliness that came before it.
The ending music for Terranigma - "Return to Mother Earth" - is what has stuck with me the longest, and even watching it in this video it made me cry. It's so good.
The ending to Super Metroid left such an impression on me when I finally beat it. Mainly because it was so difficult to get there but also, the music! it was incredible for the SNES to be able to do all that. Nice choice for number 1!
You picked my two favorite Super Nintendo games, and probably my two favorite games of all time for the top two. Great job. ... And I skipped at least three of these. There's just some RPGs that I really don't want to know the end of unless I play them.
Super Castlevania 4 was my favourite. Really made it feel like the end of an epic journey. The music is astonishingly good and appropriate. The music is so important for endings. I also loved A link to the past.
Aw man this game... If you're looking to capture what it might be like to be Simon Belmont and go through that adventure all the way to defeat Dracula this game could easily be just that 👍 I always appreciate the atmosphere and the feel of it when I'm playing it. Might have to go for another run through here soon 😏
When I beat Street Fighter 2 on the SNES for the first time on the hardest difficulty (as Ryu), I was shocked to see the final credits that starts with two people fighting, then posing with their name above their head. Then it culminates to an awesome pose of them all together, similar to the pose at the end of the movie. Ahhh, childhood
I remember first beating Super Mario RPG and wishing it had the "go around and talk to everyone" post-game EarthBound did. Goodbye Geno is still one of my favorite VGM.
Wonderful video as always SNES drunk! Excellent list with many of my all-time favorites (Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Zelda, etc.) listed! I recently picked up Live a Live (Switch) and Terranigma (repro) so I will definitely have to give those games a try soon! Thanks again!
Shoutout to TERRANIGMA! One of my absolute favorites of all time, incredibly amazing on a VAST amount of levels. A gem not many people know about due to not being released in USA etc. 8:10
Fun little tidbit with the Super Metroid ending, if you save the helper creature during the ending escape you will see a little spec of light shooting off the side of the planet as it explodes that is presumed to represent them escaping. If you don't save them, that spec doesn't appear. Definitely a worth #1, that was such an amazing payoff to teenage me when I finally finished it for the first time. Very memorable, etched in my brain.
Major props to your spoiler navigation options. Great list. My biggest gripe is that you neglected a lot of what makes FF6's ending so wonderful: Many of the characters don't just get fun vignettes--they get profound endings of their own, like Terra's survival through attachment and Shadow's probable suicide. And the ending varies based on who is with you. More generally, the theme of hope, love, and life transcending destruction is just overpowering. And the final moments as Terra lets her hair down set to the most incredible finale music... sigh... That said, it's still really hard to argue with Super Metroid. I'm not 100% sure I agree, but yes the fact that it pulls all that off with no words is a testament to its brilliance and the intensity of the gameplay itself.
Jeez, I swear I vaguely remembered a firefighter game from years ago, but could never remember the name. And here is Ignition Factor... bless you, bringer of mana and nostalgia from 90s heaven.
Im surprised no one has mentioned Seiken Densetsu 3. With 3 possible final bosses, and multiple story endings depending on your character and where your character is in the order of the game, combined with the initial somber music, and then a rather heroic theme to go with the epilogue, it seems to fit perfectly.
So happy Zangief is in this for whatever fucking reason I have loved this ending for decades and every time I go through the roster I start with Zangief 😺
XARDION : best ending ever, panthera dies, the whole fight was pointless, the enemies struggle was pointless, the world is in shambles, the monsters were protecting a hologram, we were fighting for no reason , we lost a comrade who was dissolved in stomach acid...and end of the day, the xardion unit becomes a relic...........all with the most gut wrenching music ever made for the snes.....the cutscenes were on point, the animation was on point, that was the best ending i saw in an snes game.....so depressing....and the boss was cool and how the boss kneeled in front of that shrine was really well made....
The "A Link to the Past" credit song -- gave such a HUGE feeling of accomplishment after the struggles, sort of like living a fulfilling and adventureous life and you're now ready to retire from life.
Didn't expect you put Super Metroid as no.1 but I have to agree. Of all SNES games I have beaten, Super Metroid by far superior in the execution of the ending after everything we faced throughout the game compared to other games. I am not saying other games do not have great endings but Super Metroid is perfect in everything. Gameplay, sound, music, exploration, narrative pace, and eventually the payoff to end the those experience.
Oh yes, my favorite game is #2. I legit cried while finishing Earthbound, like... I was killing Gyigas and crying at the same time. Love this game, the ending is just... really sweet, I love that kind of stuff
Just as a silly aside, I'd like to add that you can also see the "best" ending where you meet the creators by defeating Lavos straight up when you first fight him in the Ocean Palace (typically a scripted loss). With a buffed up New Game+ team, however, this far more difficult Lavos (his "destruction rains from the heavens" is way overpowered here) can be defeated to head onto the final two fights against him. Winning this will give you the creator ending, and you'll actually have three characters.
Well, obviously a game whose title is pronounced "Tear Enigma" will have an enigmatic ending that tears at your emotions... Also, another game that does something similar to the Chrono Trigger secret ending is Zombies Ate My Neighbors - there's a hidden secret bonus level that has sprite versions of the dev team that talk to you when you get close to them, and the project head is literally a floating head that floats around the level (the same way the final boss, Dr. Tongue, turns into a giant floating head for his final form) that you can shoot and kill. It was a really fun and unique way to do the credits.
(Me a couple years ago) "I'll go ahead and watch the 'Live-A-Live' ending. I mean...it's not like I'm ever going to get a chance to play it so I might as well get spoilers." (A couple months ago) "'Live-A-Live' remastered is coming to the Switch!" (Me) O_O [sobs]
Snes Drunk. I like your stuff. Here is a video that you should do... 13 games missing from the sega genesis mini.
