Thank you for explaining very clearly how to play this game. I've been storing the game for a while and now am ready to play the game with my family. I think I will like playing the game after watching your instructions. Thanks again.
I have the sequel 1313 Dead End Drive which was licensed to Parker Brothers. Very similar theme wise but different gameplay and more strategy as you try to accumulate Agatha's millions and escape. No detective as a game ender but a "clock strikes 12" card that preforms a similar function. Artwork is better on this game and two of the traps are replaced: (the bookcase becomes Agatha's vault & the chandelier becomes a mounted boars head). There's enough of a difference to merit owning both. Overall a very good review. Keep them coming.
A couple of interesting rules seem to have been left out (unless I missed them in the video). 1. When you're playing with only two players, you would each know by default which pawns belong to the other player, so a new rule is added: each player receives 4 character cards they're allowed to look at, and 2 *face down that nobody is allowed to look at*, not even the player they belong to. You keep playing until the game ends normally when either a character escapes, the detective arrives, or only one character is left alive. At this point when the game is over, only then can the players flip over their face down cards. If you're holding the character that won, then you win. If not, you both reveal your secret face down cards and discover who the winner was. The addition of this rule means that you only know the 4 characters in your hand, but you don't which of the remaining 8 characters belong to you and which belong to your opponent. This ensures that there is still a bluffing and deduction element. 2. The official rules allow for a specific type of bluff where you lie. You are allowed to *move your own character piece* onto a trap space and draw a card. You add the card to your deck, don't spring the trap (even if you draw the correct trap), and act like it was the wrong card. When you use this bluff, the other player or players will not be able to tell if you were actually moving your own character and lying about the card, or if you were genuinely attempting to kill another player.
This was my favorite game as a kid growing up during the 90s!! I'm glad there are people still playing it. Thanks for the great explanation on how to play it (it's been a while for me lol). Great video!
I remember getting this game as a gift but I never understood how to play it. Being an only child, I didn't really have a playmate there to learn with me anyways hahaha
For two player games, each player keep two of their character cards face down, so you have two characters you do not know that belongs to you and you could very well ending up disposing of one of your own.
Hi I like how you describe the game. You make it easier to understand the game. May you please make more videos when you get a chance. Thank you so much ☺️😊 👍 and have a great day ☺️ sincerely Vinny ☺️
In the rules for movement of pawns there is the following exception: pawns can move on red chairs only if blocked by other pawns. Question: Can the blocked pawn only pass onto the red chairs or can it also end its move on one of the red chairs? Also point 4, again of the pawns movement rules, says that the pawns may move on top of rugs but can they also land on top of them? Thanks.
Saw this game at Goodwill today and didn't buy it. After watching your video, I'm probably going to go back and pick it up tomorrow. Thanks for the nice review!
Huh. I thought you COULD move back to the space it started on (i.e. cat on the trap space). I assumed you couldn't back track on the same move (i.e. one dice roll is a four, and you move one pawn forward two spaces, and then move it backward two spaces). What do I know? Seriously, the rules that came with the game were a bit confusing.
feiling00 no, best to just keep that character of yours near the door until his or her portrait IS on the wall, and THEN go out the door. But that’s just a guess on my part, I’ve never played the game before. And I’m assuming that would be hard to pull off regardless.
