I have a NOS magic crankset and BB, even have the tool and shims, was to be used on my F700. Thing is they are pre recall... 😂 Not sure ... I enjoy riding my vintage bikes lol
Outstanding collection and video! I resonate with Rich's motivation for the collection as I have the same disease for 1970's dirt bikes that I grew up racing with. That was the the definitive decade for huge leaps in the technical evolution in that sport. I also dabbled in the 80s-90s mountain bikes back then (for fitness to race motorcycles and competitive fun), and have two of my originals from that period. It is amazing how things come around in a lifetime. Thank you David and Rich for sharing this!
The beauty about the 90's was that everyone was involved in your bikeand small guys could make componentry as art..syncros, Kooka, cook brothers, Cane creek, bontrager, tektro for the budget anodized..it was a thing of beauty to assemble a bike..today everything is as inhouse as they can make it and a lot of these ghuys have suffered .BTW the 90's hall of fame has got to be Klein..it is not a complete convo without them. Great show.
Nice to see the old Marin's again. I was working for the company when the mount vison pro came out. Also I worked with some of the prototypes that John Whyte designed when 1st launching Whyte bikes.
I worked in a bike shop when I was in college......I learned about head tube and seat tube angles....bikes for downhills, for cruising, switchbacks..my favorite ride was my cannondale sm 1000.. no suspension...extreme handling... full deore xt components.. raced against John tomac, Ned overend, Kip George.. great times
I just love Rich's 90s Marins! Classic 90s brands and models just stand out, and have that retro 'something'! Rich really has got some beauties there. But Marin's just do it for me, the feel of the ride wether it be a steel or aly frame, they make such lively bikes to ride. Still ride my 90s d/butted steel frame hybrid Marin now, all decked out as a drop bar (triple chain set) cross bike and its just fab! Does the job of a gravel bike, and does turn the odd head of riders aged 45 plus. Fab video Dave!
A fun episode! Thank you! Former early 90's Yeti, Merlin and Nuke Proof owner and always with the Chris King, Ringle, Grafton and Paul's bits. Such an amazing time in MTB history. Funny to see the subject so keen on Marin. It was always my opinion during the 90's, in the States, that Marin was a third-tier brand. A step above the department store. And I could never get on with that logo font or the spacing of the letters and their paint schemes.
Agree. I always thought the Marin brand was just trying to cash in on the name of the region and were simply wannabe's. Plus, never liked the look of the clear anodized aluminum frames with fat welds. Just looked cheap, regardless of brand (GT, Marin, etc.) But the polished bare Cannondales with smoothed welds did do it for me. I have a bare polished Crack-N-Fail mtn. tandem, so I have it in spades!
You make me feel old. My Mantis xcr, my Lightspeed ti and my Raleigh with chainstay mounted u-brake are all retro now. I bought them to ride "back in the day" .
I remember racing the Pace bike for a distributor in Australia as a favour and get down the first decent at Thredbo, thinking what have I signed up for, What a noodle of a frame. May as well been a Sling-shot.😮
That GT is not a unified triangle. I had one. Unified has bottom bracket in swingarm. BB is part of main frame on the GT. Those old hardtails are fun to look at but theres a reason most ride full sus now. I just rebuilt my old Giant hardtail from 2000 and it wasnt very fun. Back in the day it seemed fine but compared to my newer bikes it just felt scary because I like to ride fairly fast. Cant believe I actually used to race on it😂
I worked in a bike shop most of the 90-ties. I seen and ridden and worked on most of these bikes. Fantastic memories! Really nice collection, but, no Kona bikes?
Don't over torque those bolts on that Ringle stem now, and be tender on those crank bolts on those Cooks Bros cranks too. A lot of the cracking was from over tightening. Probably best to keep the spoke tension eased off a tad those Ringle hubs like to shatter at the flanges too. Beautiful selection.
Back in 1998 I had Spin rims on my Cannondale Super V1000. They had flat spots and Spin couldn’t fix them or replace them so I got rid of them. Then I went with Spinergy carbon spoke rims. Excellent until a tracker tree limb went into my spokes and ripped on in half. Ended up with Spox. Good times.
I've got many of these same oldies in my accumulation...Yeti Ultimate, early ARC (2), GT RTS1, Zaskar (3), early Kleins (5), '89 Wicked Fat Chance, early Salsa, Fisher CR7, 1990 Kesrel MXZ plus Y2K Fisher ZO, Mongoose Ti softail, Psyclewerks Wild Hare. But I'm stateside so these are easier to come by than UK. I remember when you could go to Europe with a Yeti and a pile of fucking Levi's and finance your whole trip.
I have just acquired a Marin east peak with the basic Fox float rear shock and Manitou spider R fork Shimano XT group set and wheels. Going to update a lot of the components such as a Fox rear shock with lockout etc. Disk brakes by Hope and a Sram 1 by 11 drivetrain. I have already bought a Fox 32 F80 fork so all good on there but amazingly when I bought the bike it came with a combination carbon handlebar stem worth more than I paid for the bike! I am going to have the bike powder coated but would like to try and source some original Marin decals not just the name and model but the other important decals as well like the downtube Ovation superlite 6061 decal. Could do with some help on this last point!
I'm looking at the manitou bike with fondness. I've got a manitou 3 forks n the shed and a mag 21. I should sell them on but they have a sentimentality. I love the Alpine stars bikes that Kloser road they were great. Any Haro bikes in the collection?
That Pace looks like an RC200 to me. Still lovely but not quite as out there with the innovation (normal chainset, bottom bracket, stem and headset, whereas the RC100 had a BMX sized bullseye chainset and BB and an upside down precursor to the aheadset we all use now)
Was wondering where he got the original Panaracer, IRC, ... tyres? He has two of my dreambikes, Pace and the Yo Eddy. I love his nice shack. I guess he would love some of mine bikes too.
Hi, I have a Pugh original, if anybody s interested in buying. Was trying to communicate with Rich Mardle, but couldn't trace him on social media. Any tips for me please ?
I,m so glad you hung shit on the grip shift i almost had a attack of post troumatic grip shift dissorder. Back then i was sponsored buy a company that wanted us to ride grip shift uuhh ahh man was it horrible ha ha i,m old .
Fascinating guys!...but shockingly poor camera work and editing, I could do an infinity better job, as could many of your viewers probably...get it together please!!
