I saw that. It actually made me very sad. In your grandparents ‘generation, people felt a company taking care of them as long as they wanted to work there. Many people look to work for one company their whole work career. They had enough money to live, and even have vacation homes. It was a much different time. Now, there’s no loyalty from either side. People constantly change jobs and it’s very insecure

The cigarette habit has an even greater risk than just the financial impact. Engaging in smoking, set's you up for numerous ailments which in the long run are extremely expensive. Cancer, heart disease, respiratory ailments, weakened immune system are just the tip of that iceberg. These ailments along with a diminished quality of life are both a personal as well as financial black whole.

I agree about the pet thing, but there are definitely exceptions. When we got our dogs, our family income was considerably higher. Now during this economic collapse, we’ve lost a third of our income and can’t afford to do all that we used to for our pets. But they are important to us and I cant imagine not keeping them. I know people will judge me for no longer taking them to the groomer and instead giving them hideous home hair cuts, and for waiting to take them to the vet until I know I cant figure out what is wrong with them and try to fix it, but I am doing the best I can with what Ive got! This failing economy is going to make us all have to reorder our priorities.

Hideous home haircuts and only utitlizing vets when needed are, in my opinion, just practical pet ownership decisions. We adopt our dogs from shelters, feed them very well, (partly as a long term cost savings because it keeps them healthy and an appropriate weight, but also because it is kind), pick dogs that need minimal grooming (the current pupper just needs nail trims because my vision isn't up to the task) and buy only the basics. A leash. A collar. A flea collar. A toy. (the current dog doesn't even care about toys, so that's a win. lol) He made one of our laundry baskets his bed and we let him. I just threw an old pillow in there and he's thrilled, so we don't even buy dog beds. A dog on a budget is the dog for us. ;)

I live alone in the boondocks and thought about getting a dog but I'm so frugal that I don't want to spend the money. I'm perfectly happy living alone. In fact, I love living alone. My kids finally left a few months ago and it's awesome. I walk dogs for some extra money and like it. Animals love me for some reason. I could never figure out why. I stayed with a friend for a few months and her dog followed me everywhere. So did her cat. It's kinda nice. They adored me. She was surprised because they never behaved like that with anyone else. It must be a gift from God.

My parents gave me one advice: if you want to buy something, save up the money first. This came from my father's side of the family. His mother loved to buy stuff but hardly had any money. That meant paying those things off in small amounts per month. To be fair it was the early 1950s and she had to raise 11 children.... Still, my dad made us save every penny we didn't need. During my own teens and 20s (okay, my early 30s as well...) I got a little carefree with money but nowadays I, once again, try to save as much as I can. Your video's helped me get back in the right mindset!

@tallyp.7643

I've started accepting this as well. I mean, part of me knew it, but part of me was resentful at the folks around me who treated money like such a taboo subject. All I ever heard was "don't use your credit card" or "save your money," but nothing about how to deal with an ever-fluctuating paycheck from part time jobs, making a budget (or at least how to figure if you're screwing yourself before it's too late). I had questions but had no idea where to start. Now I'm still trying to figure this out, and definitely need to because I can't continue this way. I've had a few years to try and turn things around--now I have at least a better idea how bad things can get if I don't and that's given me some direction as to where to find the info at least. I vowed to make this last bit of 2022 a learning point so 2023 I can make big changes. Hope you've found your way and done better. We all have to do better at this point, that's for sure. Be well.

I even started my own channel to keep myself accountable and I was very lucky to build a small but strong community with other budgeters for inspiration. I agree, unless its an animal that normally wont play with their owners or need walks to begin with, such as fish, tarantula or gecko. There are a lot of different types of pets with quite radically different needs and temperament. Some are more tolerant to people with a busy schedule, without the animal suffering. But you should only get animals you can and will give a good life, and that without burning yourself out. And also can handle economically.

Thank you for adding the pet part!! I’m a pet-free former 5 yr vet tech. My last pet died a couple months ago and I’m pregnant so I made the hard choice to give away his supplies and not have any pets. I occasionally would change the clinic’s sign to ‘Animals are a luxury, not a right.’ and I firmly believe this!
@magdalezag

I would use the sign saying the same for kids. Yes, they are luxury, and most of people treat having them as right.
@zakosist
@zakosist 2 года назад
I agree. Although I have pets myself and that's definitely among the things I want to spend my money on. I think their value shouldn't be underestimated as it can bring a lot of quality of life for many people and make lonely people much less lonely, people dont always have the option to just get human friends, even less know you can trust them. But they are also sentient beings and if you cant or wont give them a good life you have no right to keep them. I also think one should be able to pay for their vet in an emergency otherwise its both irresponsible and potentially cruel. And sometimes it may also be smarter not keep pets either for economical reasons, because you would get burned out taking proper care of them, or various other reasons like allergy.

@zakosist
@zakosist 2 года назад
@@Val.Kyrie. Some of the time I think it is (probably when the kids get a bit older). But not: if you cannot take good care of both the pet and kids at the same time, and make sure neither of them are a danger to each other. Kids are a lot of work, especially the first year. And not everyone has capacity (whether in terms of time, money or energy) to care for both at the same time.

I think pets and children fall in the same category. Many people don't think hard enough about the changes and challenges both bring before getting/having them. They just go with the common cultural ideas (in the US and Canada anyway) that people have children and pets. I firmly believe that people need to think more consciously about whether they actually want to make the sacrifices that pets and children demand, including their financial ability to provide a decent life for them. I do have to say, however, that it's a slippery slope to say that people who can't afford them shouldn't have them. It penalizes people who live in poverty and brings a lot of our prejudices and judgmental nature to the fore. Many people with good incomes treat their pets and children poorly and many people without much money treat them wonderfully. And vice versa. Good finances are not the be all and end all of being a good human or pet parent. They are only one aspect to consider.

We felt committed to providing a certain quality of life for them, resulting in us spending as much monthly on care for all those cats as we spent on groceries for ourselves. 🤦🤦 Not only that, but he never even spent time/interacted with them. He liked the "idea" of pets, but not the reality. And then, he always wondered why we could never afford to buy our own home. 🤷 I think this is pretty common behavior for a lot of people. I mean, you show me a house that's falling down around the occupant's ears, and I'll show you a house with a DirecTV dish on the roof + a large dog in a small pen in the backyard, who never gets taken for a walk. I'm sure I'll get lots of shade for this comment... If so, that'll be because I hit a nerve. 😘

Jeannie you are spot on! What’s happening all over right now is really sad and that is people are abandoning their pets because inflation is taking a grave toll on their household expenses. Truly heartbreaking. Having a pet should carry with it a lot of cerebral consideration, not JUST feelings based. IMHO

Nor wanting to face the reality if having a pet/ children- the hard work and opportunity cost both financially and in terms of ones time.

Hey! Thinking on your tenth and 11th points- one thing we decided to do with budgeting was to auto transfer a chunk of money every month into savings for any bigger, anticipated expenses. Like once a year we traveled to see family, so we took the cost of the trip and broke it into a monthly savings payment. It's so awesome, because it avoids the crazy high and low in our checking account. We're also doing that for our eventual car upgrade. :) The best part is you can do it with anything, it just gives you that much more stability in your account balance.

I know someone who did something similar with building a deck from the composite boards: every paycheck they bought a board. It breaks down the cost into bite-size chunks and meant that they knew they couldn't start until it was all paid for.

I got a small electric chain saw, circular saw, hedge clippers, and sawzall (all Ryobi) for $5 at a garage sale. They're all in gear shape and the chain saw was just sharpened. I can't bring myself to get the charger and batteries they need. I'm waiting for Christmas and I'll ask for them as a gift. So I keep sawing with my little folding saw and pruners.

People are afraid to invest which can bring them extra money but are not afraid to lost 100% of their money buying unnecesarry things. That is interesting. 😂

@Dan Swildens Understood. You’ll be pleased to know that we hold no debt of any kind. :) It’s just that my spending is too wish-washy. Budgeting doesn’t work. Minimalism has helped a lot and I no longer like to shop. Now, it’s just food. My family loves to eat out. I’m hoping the summer will stop that. Like I said earlier, I’m working on it. :)

I liked the pace of this video. It was energetic, up beat, rapid and to the point. The filming was good too. Most of all though, was that the information was apt and useful to me.

Yes on the pets!!! I see people struggling to get by, yet they get, not one but two or more pets. I don't have pets because I realize that caring for a pet requires feding and attention and high vet bills if the animal gets sick. And my current budget just does not allow for that. They're live beings and not toys, and need proper time and medical care to be healthy.

Unfortunately many people who cannot afford pets have them & don't really care about them, let alone, for them. The dogs just hang out. If you won't even walk your dog everyday, dont have one. They have needs & walking is free! I'd love a dog but, I have time & a little extra for my French Bulldog. If you know where I can rescue one (they can cost $5000 & up) I'd Love to make my dream come true! Anyway, Thank You! 💔🐶 💜 💙 ❤️ 🧡 🐶💝

I think I saw a video this morning where you talked about buying three pairs of pants that you really love. You said that you love all the clothes in your closet. Well, I thought I love all my clothes that are left from Decluttering. But there is this one pair of jeggings that are not in the best shape. I think I’ve gotten my use from them. I realized I really don’t like picking them out to wear them. I put them in quarantine to see if I can be doing without them. If I see another pair to replace them, great! I’m hoping I got the right person. There was another person who did a motivational video also that I listen to this morning
