I love Vanillaware so SO much.. their art direction never fails to awe me. When I imagine Odin Sphere getting a glow up with the same kind of look 13 Sentinels has, I *salivate*.
I double dipped on this one. Soon as I knew there was switch port inbound, I didn’t hesitate. That happens a lot with my Switch purchases! 13 Sentinels works so well on Switch, well worth it.
Played this and all I can tell you is to prepare every bit of brain cell you can muster. This game will throw so many twists and turns that you will physically feel the whiplash. A great game and an essential for any Switch owners.
Hoping the sales will finally push Vanillaware to port all of their other amazing games to the Switch. Odin Sphere, Dragon’s Crown, Muramasa and Grim Grimoire!
Art style on this looks AMAZING! I’ve been wanting to dive deep into a beautiful, story filled, narrative game for a while. Might have to wait on a sale though. Thanks for a great review…CHEERS! 🍻
If you like Vanillawares artstyle, check out Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, Dragon's Crown and Muramasa: The Demon Blade. They're all more action oriented though.
I've never gone back to a game review after buying and playing it to throw my two cents in, but I had to for this. This game is so freaking good! I've been burnt on so many switch game purchases because of positive reviews, and I was on the fence about this one, but I'm so glad I caved and got it. The game is story heavy, and the RTS design is a bold choice, but this game is so good at breaking up the exposition and leaving cliffhangers, that it really has that "one more episode" feel. I just got Triangle Strategy last month and dropped out after 20 hours because the pacing and world building was. so. freaking. slow. 13 Sentinels has an even more mind-boggling and dense story, but it never feels like it's forcing its world building down your throat. It's just gently tugging you along its crazy story, and the second you start to get tired of dialogue, it jangles some (RTS) keys in your face to keep you going. Also this is pretty major for a story dense game, but the English voice acting is actually really good. It is very rare for me to not immediately cringe and switch to Japanese voice acting in export games, but I actually found myself preferring English after trying both. tl;dr: This game for me is 10/10, and I would wager that if you have any interest in the subject matter or just anime in general, you'll love this game and you'll keep playing til the end.
Same I have so many switch games in my library. I’m burnt too. I have over 130 games. Lol I could not buy games for a year and have games to play but I’m addicted to making my library huge. Plus I keep them forever. Bout to play this hope I get sleep for work in am! 😂
With 13 Sentinels finally being on the Switch I really hope it will get the attention it deserves. If you enjoy a good story or like sci-fi or want to play something unlike anything else you ever played, you will not regret getting 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
I hope Vanillaware release their other games on Switch, imagine playing GrimGrimoire, Odin Sphere, Muramasa, Dragon's Crown on handheld mode, that would be awesome :)
I'm 20 hrs into this on PS5 but still had to watch your review 😆 Awesome game. Agree on the aimless wandering though. Sometimes missing the trigger to progress the scene means you have to do it all over again and can be frustrating. Story is super though
I don't know much of the story but having a time traveling game about mechs, it would have been interesting to have the mechs reflect the person's Era. Like the 80s, their mechs look like gundam. The guy from the 40s maybe like a tank or farm equipment he has seen.
I’m so happy for anyone discovering this game for the first time. I have it digitally on PS4 but I’m definitely getting the physical for my switch collection.
Have it on PS4 and will be picking up this on Switch as well. The game is amazing and I need to support these awesome devs. If anyone is up to good story and great cast, pick it up. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks to you guys, I got this on sale the other day, been wanting it since you first mentioned it, so pleased. I never would have thought this was for me just seeing it in the eshop
The story in this game will shock you left and right and is amazing. The art is beautiful and the strategy part is actually fun. I highly highly recommend! It's actually a disservice to yourself not to play. The English voice acting is def good too. I did everything and game is around 35 hrs or less for me.
Only way I would even try this game is if it was free on Game Pass. AAA price is just too much for me to gamble on a game that I cannot see myself enjoying.
@@sevensyns7732 Although I think I would enjoy it, I agree on the AAA price point. Probably worthy of it and deserved. I wish the devs a good financial run with this one and look forward to the next one. SALESALESALE!!!
I'm interested in the story and art, but not-so-much the combat. If it goes on sale I'll consider it. I mean, I also have a huge backlog of games to play...
Had it on the PS4 for a while and hadn’t got around to playing. Now I’ve gotta give it a go and, depending on how much I ‘love’ it may decided for a second purchase on the Switch when it comes on sale.
I always watch your reviews @SwitchUp I bought triangle strategy last week. I’m buying 13 sentinels now you never disappointed me. I have never tried this game but I know atlus makes good games. I went on a limb and got it. I’m starting it shortly. I have work in am hope it don’t keep me up all night. I love a good story game. For full price I hope it’s worth it. Thanks you guys at switchup!! Love the reviews.
Looking at the gameplay and animation, this game kinda reminds me of a mash up between Front Mission's top down mech JSRPG mechanics with the side scrolling art and gameplay of Valkyrie Profile. It is pretty damn unique, similar to how Nier mashed different video game genres together to form a pretty fun game.
My copy arrived yesterday and I’m double dipping from PS4/5. Ran both yesterday and I couldn’t see any visual difference at all. In handheld it’s even better. Fabulous game.
I was looking for review of 13 sentinels and ofc i see SwitchUp review and i think to myself - ofc they did it. And than i see the red borderline below the image... I watched it already? What the...
Ive been on the bench abkut this one and not been sold by on it by others but this is a way more clear veiw of it and i am sold thank you for the quality and clear cut reveiw
I swear, I go crazy over anything Atlus puts out and Vanillaware is totally new to me. I’ve had my eye on this for a long time now. I’m so stoked to give it a try
They could give the sentinels some actual models and attack animations. The story should have been more grounded instead being all over the place. But, still the art direction blew me away, it’s a must have.
The "dots" during the combat gameplay is very disappointing compared to the great visuals of everything else in the game. Such a missed opportunity. Hope it does well for others so we could get Odins Sphere.
Yes, I've felt that at the beginning but the mechanics are so addicting and fast-paced that you wouldn't have time to look at the images anyway. There are small preview videos of moves that you are about to perform, so at least those give you some idea. Great game in any case.
@@yuseifudo2609 as is The stupid reasoning/justification for a bunch of nude (teenage)pilots. Just because it’s ‘explained’ doesn’t mean it’s justified…
Underscored! 😅 I loved it on PS4 but it's even better on Switch. A real love letter to science fiction. It's perfect for portable play, too. Fabulous game.
great review, playing the game at the moment on the switch had it before on ps4 but never somehow toched. now with these new release it need toi be played. crazy is the 5 hours "tutorial" before you then can start the game, but this start makes sense and the best entry for the game
I was surprised by this one. It's not normally a genre I'd go for but I think I'd actually like to give this one a go. And then I saw the AUD$ price. Steeper than a Nintendo flagship game. On it goes to my wishlist and hopefully a sale at some point. Great review guys!
Here are 13 reasons to buy this game. It's good, nice, swell, really good, awesome, damn good, sweet, fantastic, great, beautiful, fun, and well worth it.
VanillaWare and Atlus...damn that's a must buy. I will definitely be picking this up and I will continue to shout on High, "VANILLAWARE GIVE US MURAMASA DEMON BLADE FOR THE SWITCH" IMO the most beautiful game that came out for Wii.
