Another "Fun Fact" is that the head can survive some time after being decapitated. Imagine watching a cheering crowd before being thrown in a dark box, fully understanding what has happened
Another fact about the Brazen Bull is that its creator was a famous sculptor who was commanded by a tyrannical emperor, who also practiced cannibalism, to make a torture/execution device. When he presented the finished bronze sculpture to the emperor, he was both horrified and excited... and promptly volunteered the sculptor as the first "test subject." So yes, the first person to die in the Brazen Bull was the person who created it.
The Brazen bull was not the way he died the king said it was a joke about halfway through and took him out and then threw him off the cliff for the final blow
@@SpiderweeeeeeeJesus Christ, that’s insane. I can only imagine how betrayed I would’ve felt if I were the creator. but i assume he was forced to sculpt the torture device, do you know?
Fun fact: the phrase "Pulling your leg" (British slang for having a joke) comes from hangings. Because they used to be so botched, like Kris said, family members/friends in the watching crowds would often run to the victims afterwards to pull on their legs, ensuring the neck would break so their loved one didn't have to suffer for longer than needed.
Fun fact: the reason why people who were getting hung got blindfolded is because when you are hung, there's so much force on the head, the eyes "pop out" of the socket. So people started blindfolding the hanging victims to take the human element away.
The crucifixion nails went straight through the medial nerve in the wrist, and likewise between the upper toe bones. So you were suspended by and on your own nerves, and the only way to breathe was to push/pull on the nails to be able to breathe out. You basically suffocated for days only being able to breathe when the fight/flight reflex got so bad that you would push through the pain to take another breath.
Poor Jesus, I love my Savior so much! He is so amazing for us, he even died in this excruciating way to save us from our sin. He is all powerful and could've hopped off that cross if He wanted to, but He didn't! He chose to die, for us, in our place! And if you believe in Jesus is God's only Son and sent Him to get crucified, and rose up 3 days later, and you confess that Jesus is Lord, you'll be saved! Romans 10:9-10 says "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved." And you'll get to go to Heaven and be with God and Jesus someday! So please, everyone, Jesus is magnificent and loves you more than your spouse, friends, parents or anyone else ever could! He wants to see you in Heaven with Him for eternity! 1st Corinthians says, "O death, where is your sting? O hell, where is your victory?" Jesus has the power to save each and every one of us from our sin, with deseserves Hell, and always know that with Jesus, anything is possible and death is powerless because of God's everlasting love for us! ❤
It would have been hard to place the nails because according to the Bible no bones were broken in the process, there are two bones in the wrist which are so close together it would be difficult to nail in between
The creator, Perillus, was actually the first victim of the Brazen Bull. The ruler at the time wanted a “demonstration” and ordered Perillus to be put in it after he showed it off to Phalaris
He didn’t die from it though, they took him out and after he demanded to be paid for his work he was thrown off a cliff because they assumed it should be a gift lol
The fact that Kris says “we all know they’d accuse me of being a witch back then” and then proceeds to say that she’s gonna rank them 1-13….😂😂😂😂 idk if that was intentional or not but I found it very funny😂😂 Love ya Kris!
The best part about the bull is that the creator of it was executed inside of it as a test subject or something if I'm correct. Absolutely hilarious lol
21:31 I CAN’T BREATHE, I’M A HUGEEEE GHOST FAN AND I LOOKED AWAY FOR A SECOND TO JUST HEAR TOBIAS GROWLING “RATS”. Anyway, great video like always Kris! Even though these are serious topics you can still make it fun :3
This was really funny to watch for me. As a kid who had a morbid curiosity of history, I knew of all but one of these methods and hearing kris saying oh that doesn’t sound too bad and them being horrified was rather funny lol.
I mean, Guillotine is probably the least horrific way to die, but you forgot to mention that A, YOU DONT DIE IMMEDIATELY you will see your head dropping to the ground before you actually die, although you'd probably be in shock and not able to actually process what's happening, you would technically still be alive for a few seconds, and B, they often didn't sharpen it after every chop, resulting in a dull blade that would take several tries to actually sever your head :')
My list (from least to worst): 1. Guillotine (obviously) 2. Keelhauling 3. Pear of anguish 4. Hanging 5. Blood eagle 6. Boiling 7. Crucifixion 8. Drawing and quartering 9. Roman candle 10. Brazen bull 11. Iron maiden 12. Rat torture 13. Scaphism Also love your videos and how your content changes. I find some of the macabre things about the past that you deep dive into really interesting and the variety and effort you put into your videos :) thanks for being so cool
@@Air_fryer-t3f A device that it put into one of the body's orifices and slowly spread outward. For example, if it were placed in the mouth, it would slowly unfold like a flower until tore holes through the cheeks and broke your jaw. However, the victims didn't die. It was more of the slow and agonizing pain of having your skin ripped apart and jaw dislocated.
My list from least to worst 1. Guillotine 2. Hanging 3. Keelhauling 4. Pear of anguish 5. Blood eagle 6. Boiling 7. Crucifixion 8. Iron maiden 9. Roman candle 10. Brazilian bull 11. Rat torture 12. Drawing and quartering 13. Scaphism Also love your vids! ❤❤❤ they make my day 😂
My list: 1. Crucifixion - Iconic 2. Boiling - It's probably an easy death.... 3. Hanging 4. Drawing and Quartering - Also an iconic death 5. The Blood Eagle - I dreamt of it as a child, therefore I am prepared 6. Iron Maiden 7. Brazen Bull 8. Guillotine - Decapitation is scary 9. Roman Candles 10. Keelhauling 11. Pear of Anguish - It's okay, I'd give them whatever information they wanted anyway.. 12. Rat torture 13. Scaphism
Ok so i just wanted to share this have you seen matilda the original if so is it me or does the iron maiden kinda sound a little bit like the chokey i thinks thats were the matilda makers got the idea what do you think also i agree alot with your list
21:27 Fun (but also scary) Fact: The Mafia still uses this technique in their torture practices, when getting information out of people, or get back at people who have double crossed/stole from them and to the people who disrespect someone they protect. Though, they use a metal bucket and a torch gun or sometimes a lighter (if they want to drag it out for a longer period of time), with the person either tied to a chair, laid on a cool floor (to draw the rats to dig deeper) or in the most extreme way, they wield a metal suit onto the victim (this is like pieces of metal that's attached to the bucket, wrapped around them so as to prevent it being taken off.) leaving no chance of escaping death.
@@сесилияалександрова It's been done in movies. I know one was The Fast and The Furious. If you look it up though, it did not originate with "The Mafia", nor is mafia even mentioned.
Fun fact: The brain remains conscious approximately 7 seconds after decapitation. That means if you were beheaded swiftly enough, you may be able to experience your head rolling away from your body. (I forget where i heard this, but it is technically a theory, since there isnt a way to experiment or quantify that information)
In a darkly humorous way I'm just picturing someone volunteering as an experiment and trying to remember to give a thumbs up if it's true. Because obviously they couldn't yell yes with their vocal chords detached from their mouth like I first pictured.
@@Offcialjoomen it does a bit doesn’t it?? 😂 I thought it was interesting how insane and eerily creative people got when it came to torturing/punishing people even for small petty crimes
man medieval torture devices and methods are so interesting to me despite how gruesome all of them are so I’m glad to see you talk about them. love you Kris, great video as always and hope you’re doing well!
Medival torture ( for some reason ) was always a topic of mystery to me, even though I had already known some of the stories told in Kris's video ( Roman candles is one ) I loved this video, and honestly? I want a part two of this, because Kris makes it extremely interesting and funny to me.
I used to work at Medieval Times and would be in charge of "guarding the dungeon" or taking tickets from people and letting them into the Torture implements museum and on slow days after the shows were done I loved giving personal tours and talking about each of the displays. My favorite was the Pear of Anguish, it was usually only with groups of adults though lol
Which medieval times if don't mind me asking. I spent loads of time in there when we'd go 2 the one in Kissimmee! Probably gone to over 20 shows there throughout the years & I'm sure creeped a few workers out as a kid being so interested in all medieval torture
A buddy of mine and I used to sit around and get high and think up different torturous ways to die. One of my favorites that he came up with involved putting someone in a shed, inserting a pipe into their rectum and feeding barbed wire into it, leaving a little hanging out, removing the pipe, securing the wire to the floor, then leaving the shed and lighting it on fire, leaving them with the choice of burning to death or hastily pulling the barbed wire out.
Fun fact about the Brazen Bull: the person who created it, Perillos of Athens, was also it’s first victim. The person he created it for wanted a demonstration, and poor Perillos drew the short straw.
15:06 why was the first thing that popped up in my head when I saw Henry the 8th: 🎵DIVORCED, BEHEADED AND DIED,DIVORCED BEHEADED,SURVIVED. I’M HENRY THE 8th I HAD 6 SORRY WIFES, SOME MIGHT SAY I RUINED THIER LIFES🎵
I never thought my respect for a RU-vidr would get any higher, but GODDAMMIT after that singular second of the Rats music video by Ghost?!?? I will literally respect you until the end of time and I will fight frigging battles for Jay and Kris!! Ya’ll are awesome!! ❤️❤️🐀
A very un-fun fact: when you're burning alive, like the Roman candle, your eyes literally melt out of your head before you even have a chance to pass out.
and because entire groups were lined up to light-up an evening banquet for the elite, the area literally smelled like a roast or barbecue. A cacophony of flayed wails as the place smelled of roasted human flesh.
You always make me smile even when I’m feeling depressed af. Your compliments bring me through and I hope to someday meet you or even become friends❤️❤️
Same. I had a project ban from a history fair because it was based on the torture methods used by those "seeking justice" in the Salem Witch Trials. The admin were hella bothered by the paper doll displays as well as the poster. 😅
I’m Dutch and it makes so much sense why we learned about keelhauling in primary/middle school, it also makes sense that they did that tbh. I was 10 first time I heard of this lmao. We learned a lot about torture methods in school tbh. Side note, the Dutch were insane, at one point they murdered and ate their prime minister and his brother “gebroeders de Witt” it’s also still not illegal to eat human flesh here. 👍🏻
I am from Germany. Same there. We learned about stuff like this at school from a very young age. Like when I was 11, we learned about the Romans and a bit about Egypt and how they would lock up the Pharao's lovers alive alongside him😅 That kinda stuff
I grew up in Tidewater Virginia, US, so between the history of colonists, pirates, and the Navy in the area, the school system felt learning about keelhauling was appropriate for 7-9 year olds 🤔
The Pair of Anguish or also known as a choke pair, would also be used in robberies. It would usually be put in a woman’s mouth to keep them from screaming.
The blood Eagle was actually done in a scene on the TV show Vikings, there's also a viking themed tattoo shop in south of England called Blood Eagle ☺️ Also I knew about the keelhauling before, it was done in a film I watched, actually it was done on the series Black Sails, it's in Season 4.
Edit: it was Black Sails I saw the keelhauling done, it's in Season 4. @@Mererid that could be where I saw it then, I really can't remember what I was watching where I saw it 😅 Actually pretty sure I saw it in Vikings too but it has been a while since I've watched it lol
Kris, I love this. I've also read and watched things about torture/execution methods through history. A little more information on "The Pear). There were also larger versions from the ones used in the mouth. These were anywhere from 10 in.-12 in. long and about 2-3 in. wide. Some had flat hooked things on the outside. With the point of the "hook" facing in a direction so that no major damage was done during insertion, but would do horrendous damage during opening. These larger versions were inserted in places below the waist. On a male prisoner...well, there was only one hole. On a female prisoner 2. When these were opened, they would tear/cut/shred internal organs. The prisoner wouldn't die right away. The blood usually stayed trapped inside. So if the loss of blood internally didn't kill them over several excruciatingly painful hours, then infection(sepsis) would, and that could take days or weeks. Keep up the great vids(loving the true crime). Much love to you and Kevin. Take Care and Stay Safe.
as a duch, I know very mutch about kielhaulig. It didn't get used a lot, and if it happend, most victims got proper armor, (mostly leather tho) and survive it. unfortunaly most did pass away after a few weeks due infection of the wounds they got (but most people on a boat didn't survive). compared to the others this was probaly the least worse becouse you still have a chance to survive
kris you are so beautiful! i can’t get over how you literally can pull off any hairstyle and color. this upload came just in time! watching you while i get ready for the day 💃🏼
Fun fact... Iron Maidens were never used. They were designed in the Victorian era as a "medieval torture device" by showmen and fantasy writers. They were "decorated" on the inside with spikes because the contraption itself was a decoration.
Similar to the _spiketunnan_ in Norse culture. Essentially a wooden barrel with spikes driven through. The victim was placed inside and the barrel rolled until death. Again, it is widely prevalent in folklore but no actual recorded usage
I was looking for this comment, a lot of medieval torture methods were never actually used. Iron Maiden being one of the more famous examples. The blood eagle being a second.
ohh i love the "bloody eagle!" ive heard a lot about it, it was apparently a fantasy way of torture and did not actually happen, though it was quite cool!
Nero sounds like the Jigsaw of his time Great video Kris! Love the set up and your hair! Love that your also using some of Oompa’s mannerisms - super sweet!
Fun fact: crucifixion was also used in the Carthage empire mostly for generals who failed in battle. This is why they were very careful while planning. And the disturbing fact is that they thought this to children in their schools
Fun Fact Time! - The Pear of Anguish was generally disproven as a method of medieval torture, as the strength of springs at the time period that they were supposedly used were not nearly strong enough to rip open orifices, and could easily be resisted by jaw, pelvic or anal muscles depending where inserted. The jaws of the pear were also likely held closed by a latch, which would not be able to be opened when within a human, and the spring would open the jaws too quickly for the latch to be opened before inserting the device. (Don't quote me on this it is just something i remember from when I hyper fixated on medieval torture methods.) - The Guillotine was still in use in France when the first Star Wars movie came out. - Prisoners used to fight over who got to be executed first by the Guillotine as the blade dulled over time and multiple chops had to be made to finish the execution of the final prisoners is there were many to be executed.
I’m from Texas so get ready for the heat. I’m part Canadian but haven’t gotten chance to go up there. You and Caleb are precious, btw. How’s Ace doing and how’re the pups getting along? I’d love to see pics of Ace!
Roman Candles are so fascinating to me. I’m a Percy Jackson fan and Nero is in the third pjo series, Trials of Apollo, and SPOILER ALERT he tried to make Roman candles out of some of the campers (ToA was so graphic looking back at it). It’s just so cool to me the idea. I’m a writer if you didn’t realize btw
Many torture device was, in fact, not utilize. For example the pear of anguish. It's in fact not possible to "open" the mouth to this extent (or other holes...) with that. The iron maiden was also just a fashion device but not actually use as a torture device. But... there was sooo many other torture. Source : The torture museum in Lyon - France.
Here in Australia we have two weeks off after each term ends and I was REALLY not looking forward to going back to school tomorrow so being able to watch this made my day.
