These are the steps I go through to check out a drivetrain on a Snapper. If you have any questions or comments leave them in the box below and I'll answer you. And as always work safe have fun and let's fix this thing. Thanks Jim
Bought my house in 1990, came with a1986 11hp 33" rider. Still in the house, and still using the Snapper. What a simple, quality lawnmower. Your video on the transmission, makes me appreciate it even more. I never knew there was that much engineering in the final drive. Thanks again for posting this video 👍 Love my Snapper
I have that mower! 33" single blade and the innovative swivel mechanism make this the best cutting mower I've ever had, and I've had quite a few. I bought it for $250 with a shot rubber wheel from a guy who had just got him a zero turn. We went through it and replaced chains and differential gears. After one of my boys forgot to replace the oil in the original B&S 11HP, we salvaged a Kawasaki 14HP from a Deere, and kept the Snapper going. My says "Hi Vac Xtra Tough" and it is. It's 38 years old and so simple and tough, I think I'll keep it a few more years. I just watched this video because after a belt change the brake is locked on. We'll figure it out with help from Jim.
Jim, Thank you for the terrific videos. So I had a drivetrain problem on a 2015 Snapper rider as it stopped going forward and backwards as I vacuumed up the last of the leaves. I almost gave this repair to a local shop due to my arthritis but it is a warm day in NJ so I went for it. I did all the trouble shooting recommendations you suggest and moved to checking the reduction gears in the transmission. I removed the right tire and the transmission cover bolts expecting to find a bad gear. Nada, all looked good and put it back together just enough to reconnect both axels. I repeated checking by turning the friction wheel and could feel the right hex axel turning under the boot. I looked some more at the left side and noticed the left wheel sometimes turned giving me a false positive. I then removed the plastic wheel cap finding that the axel bolt had sheared. LOL I am still chuckling to myself, such a simple fix! Recommend that your video be edited adding that as a first step one should check both axel shear bolts.😁
Oh I have a video talking strictly about that because it is such a common issue but I’m glad I could help if you need anything else please let me know and I hope you subscribe it’s free and it really does help me keep this channel going. Jim Oh yes I forgot I do charge for my help and what a charge is a picture of you sitting on your snapper to hang on my wall of friends. I have a little over 200. You can send it to my email which is jimsfixitshop@gmail.com and any other questions you can send there also.I try to put out a new video every two weeks at least and as soon as I get my shop cleaned up I am going to have a shop tour coming up pretty quick.
THATGUY83 Hi I’m Jim I’m glad you like the videos for help I enjoy helping people repair their snappers hope your a subscriber I have more stuff coming. Thanks Jim
Well I am another Jim and I am happy to have found this channel and yes I subscribed! A sincere thank you for taking the time and huge effort to make these videos.Just bought a cherry 2008 series 23 that looks like its never been used. Its needs nothing and I want to keep it that way and your videos are the key.At 64 years of age,its my first riding mower and after 2 weeks of ownership I completely understand the fondness their owners feel for them.
James Gordon Hi Jim glad to hear you found a nice Snapper and I’m glad to hear that you’re a subscriber and I’ll do my best to keep that machine running like new. If you have any issues feel free to let me know. Jim
Hi Jim, Due to the drive chain issue, I ended up buying my first 'brand new' Snapper. I've had 4 over the previous 37 years - but I always purchased a used Snapper. The drive chain issue was not resolved by switching the transmission on a older unit. I'm excited to have one that I will be able to use reliably for the next couple years. The old one was hard to start, leaked/burned oil, so the transmission was the final straw. Thank you for your help and support. I will shift from watching how to repair to how to maintain. Best regards, Paul - South Jersey
Great video and information! My snapper just started "bucking" when I put it in gear and drive. Almost like there's a bad tooth or something on one of the gears. I guess for now I can check the drive disc and then go from there. It's obviously worse when I go uphill because I'm putting more of a load on it.
hello. Just bout a used 33" snapper and it doesn't have enough power in 1st gear and gets stuck in thick grass.. I'm going to go through it per your video and see what's up. Thanks for taking the time to explain all of that to us. I will keep you posted with my progress. Thanks again.
Thks, Jim, that "explains", the mystery of how< "this", differential works . Real good explanations, I don't have all the names down. I already forgot how many teeth were on that big gear. but everytime I watch your videos I get a little bit more. Still looking to see what part gives the different speeds. Usually it's a transmission . But I don't see one! I think I'll ask that new co-pilot thing in my computer to see what his or her explanation is of where the transmission is on a snapper rear engine mower lol
the answer I got from the co pilot about where is the transmission No conventional tranny. Explanation was, as the chain case moves along the hex drive axle it changes sprockets in the differential with the chain drive inside the differential . I'll have to look in my manual's parts layout and see if I can spot different size sprockets. The co-pilot also referred me to your videos, but I haven't found one yet explaining the shifter movements thru each gear and showing all the sprockets in a pile on the bench used and explanation of how just because the chain drive gets closer to the differential box it can magically switch chain sprockets into a higher gear ratio. It doesn't seem like there is that much room in there to do all that
A snapper is a friction drive machine that’s been around 50 years. It’s very dependable simplistic and easy to fix. You won’t find anything else on the market that picks up leaves like a snapper does as long as you buy a rear engine snapper with a Hi-VAC deck. It is a patented deck design that no one else currently uses even though I’m sure the patent has long since expired. Happy Shappen. Jim
@@jimjackson9381 I put a long post how I figured it out putting 2 & 2 together on video 89 I guess there is no heading transmission cause there isn't one. sort like variable speed in a way. As I still have never driven one. Thks for the ability of a HV version. I had a chance to buy one of those I guess would of given mine more of a purpose I didn't know they picked up leaves so good. But it was missing the catching stuff and more money.
Jim thanks for all your videos. Recently purchased a home and there's an old snapper in my shed that came with the home! Finished most my projects around the home and I think I'm gonna dig into that old snapper and get it up and running especially for this fall (four oak trees in my yard tired of raking). I'll be sure to let you know and give you the story of what I find. Thank you sir
Your model is awesome- my snapper all of a sudden is jerking real bad when I put it in any gear - when I turn it Jerks as well and the mower "slides" in stead of turning
Well, I’m not sure what’s causing the jerking but when you try to steer and the machine goes straight, do you have a bagger on the back your machine? It sounds like you need to put some weight on the front between the two front tires and check to see how much tread you have on your front tires that will also allow them to slide instead of turning. Jim.
Thanks for the video. I'm having an issue with shifting. My snapper runs fine in 1st & 2nd gear. It also runs in 5th but it will stop. It will move again if I press in the clutch. It only does this in 3rd-5th gear. I just replaced the clutch disk which was a bit worn out but that didn't solve the problem.
Hi Jim I’m a subscriber but I haven’t seen my problem. My snapper acts like the clutch is slipping. It won’t go up a small incline and even worse in higher gears. The wheel has lots of rubber on it. And reverse seems to work good. Thanks Jon Helms.
Jon Helms Have you watched video number 70 it will explain how to tighten your yoke spring that is probably all that is wrong with your machine, if it doesn’t help please let me know. Jim
Jon Helms OK now takeoff both tires pull your dust caps away from the outside of your fenders so you can see your bushings if your bushings are worn and letting the axle swap around that’s going to affect how the machine operates check that and let me know. Jim
I have a hyvac Snapper older machine idk it's running great until I downshifted and now I have no engagement of gear or reverse do have neutral and park I believe but looking at your video I think it has something to do with the pinion gear the main that drives the spur gear you said somebody shaves off I might have to look and see if that's the problem somehow I'm not sure what model it is
First, thanks for making yourself available to us!!! Well, I fire my snapper up & it starts screaming like it’s a belt. The gear lever moves pretty freely. Thoughts?
Well if it acts like the belt is screaming hope it cover off and make sure the pulley are all turning freely and then stand it up and check the belt on the bottom of the engine. Jim
I wonder if you could adapt a pair of tracks like from a tracked snow blower, I bet it would push a lot of snow. I just don't know how it would steer without braking for each rear drive assembly.
Hi Jim, So glad I found you. Have a 2012 SPX 2042 and trans is grinding. Still works, but dealer said he doesn't know what's wrong but would be too expensive to fix. Ugh. Not sure I can tackle this myself but at least got a lot from your explanations on how it all works. Should probably check in with someone else that i know as to whether its worth fixing or just run it after its regular service. Was told not sure how long trans will last. Would appreciate any feedback on all this. Thank you!!
I’m gonna need some pictures of this thing I’m not sure I know what the SPX 2042 is that model number doesn’t sound familiar at all to me you can send the pictures to my email which is jimsfixitshop@gmail.com Thanks. Jim
I don’t think the temperature had anything to do with it you either have a issue in your chain case or in your differential and the only way to tell is take them apart. Jim
Jim my name is wayne and i am from Knoxville Tn i am enjoying and learning a great deal from them. I have a snapper model 28106-2 rear engine snapper lawn mower and having the now forward or reverse. I have checked the movement of the axles and tires and the transmission is i believe working as it should. I decided to disassemble the rear axle and differential case to check some of the items that you suggested. i found that the bearing on the right rear axle has worn just down to the frame but no further, the clutch disk is worn down but more on one side of the rubber disk than the other. I assume this is because the axle was out of alignment because of the extreme bearing wear. I did take apart the left side and take apart the diff case, i found most of the parts seemed ok but the large gear was extremely knifes edge. Not sure if the chain needs replacing but probably does. Now that you kind of know where i am at and have limited funds and the fact that i only use the mower three or four times a year to mulch the leaves. I know the long axle shaft has some wear on it but if i just replace both fender bearings, boots, clutch disk, the big gear in the diff, and the chain without the long axle in your experience how long do you think the fender bearings would last if i only use it 4 times a year on 1/3 of an acre . Thanks for your help wayne
Yes I think you’d be OK by doing that the long axle usually gets more Abuse because nobody greases the outboard bushing in the fender if you look close you’ll notice there is a grease fitting in it but it seldom gets any grease I might grease mine once every two or three months. Thanks. Jim
@@jimjackson9381 Thanks for the quick response, if you have any good used parts i could purchase from you from the ones i listed i would be happy to get them from you before i make my buy on new ones. thanks Wayne
Jim,I have older snapper rear engine rider, the shifting carriage seems frozen on the drive shaft ,every thing is disconnected from it but it won't slide either direction. I don't want to break anything by forcing it to much. Any suggestions.
When I spin my friction disk by hand my wheels go in opposite directions almost like a zero turn would do if you are trying to pull a 180 or 360 turn, shouldn’t both tires go the same way ?
They typically do, but if you have a bushing in your fender that’s worn and the axle is having issues turning it will turn the differential in opposite directions
Beside the large gear there is a sprocket that has a chain and goes to the reduction gear. On my machine a regular chain will not fit on these sprockets. The links will not fit because they are too long and won't fit into the spaces correctly. Is there a special chain to use?
I think the chain in the chain case and in the differential is a standard number 35 chain but I buy mine new from Parts Tree.Com and they’re already circular. You don’t have to put a link in them. They’re ready to go when your machine. Jim.
hello I put thick grease in the differential of the snapper rider, and now the wheels do not turn when I engage, and it is from the differential, what to put in it. Thank you for your reply
Well, I’m not totally sure that Greece would actually lock up your drivetrain, but I would probably clean it out and fill it full of Snapper double00 lube. Jim
Jim, I have a 2011 Snapper rear engine 28" mower. I am replacing the engine. Do I need to remove the mowing deck to reinstall the engine???? Stupid me I did not see that the oil filter came loose and the oil drained out seizing the engine. Lesson learned. Also do you have a video and replacing the engine?
Sky High No you don’t have to take the deck off it might make it a little easier but you should be fine, you do want to check the engines and make sure that the crankshaft is in the same location in relationship to the bolt pattern that holds it down to your machine otherwise you’ll burn up clutch disks in no Time. Jim
What chain are you talking about, the one in the chain case or the one in the differential? Pictures would really help. If it’s a chain inside of the chain case I would have to say your bearings are shot or your sprockets and shaft is shot or your sprocket and hub is shot. If you’re talking about your differential, the sprocket on your hexagon shaft could be bad or the sprocket and gear could be bad or you could have bad bushings in the fenders, causing the issue, without at least pictures it would be impossible for me to guess what is going on. Jim.
Jim, My 28inch snapper locks up. After pushing and pulling the machine it unlocks for a period and then locks up again. Think it's the big gear or one of the pinion gears?
Oh, if I had to guess I would say that’s probably what your issue is send it up and look at the outside of the differential case and see if it’s OK or if it has a rip in it. Jim.
Jim my RE130 stopped and the engine died. It was locked up and would not move in neutral. got in garage and lifted it. Initial response was when I ran the mower and out into gear I could feel/ here it bind just a little. Put jacked back up and ran thru all the gears and it seemed to run well. Let down and rode all around my garage pad then parked it. Still felt as though it was binding a little. could it need dope in the rear gear and chain cases?
I was looking for repair videos, I found this machine at my grandfather . It runs but it needs some parts , how can I find clutch wheel or link to transmission
@@davidearly4119 well for starters take your hubcaps off and check the bolts that go through your wheel flange and through your axle. Let me know if they’re both good. It’s hard to tell so you may have to put a wrench on the nut and try to turn it because they may look all right, but they still could be broke on the inside.
Just bought a used model 281016BE Snapper and was made aware that the engine would shut off when brake/clutch pedal is released. Was shown that the seat switch had already been bypassed years ago and not the issue. It looks like you briefly showed a switch in another video at the bottom near the yoke. Do you think that could be the problem? I really enjoy all the info you show in these videos!
Philip McCarthy If you watch video number 309 at nine minutes and 53 seconds I hold up a piece of paper with all the numbers on it you’ll need for both sides and the seals. Jim
@@RobertDickens2002 take off your hubcaps off your rear tires and check the bolts going through your axle and wheel flanges and make sure they’re not broken. Jim
@@RobertDickens2002 sorry about that. I reread your email and are you talking about the steering wheel and you must have what I refer to as a turtle if so, your rack is probably starting to strip out and unfortunately it’ll have to be replaced. I do have a video that shows how to do this if you go to my homepage just above where it says manage videos there is a link you can go to that will give you a directory of all of my videos my name and numbers to help you find the one you need. Jim
I have a snapper sr1533 back wheels won't turn in tandem but when you flip mower up on back they will turn opposite when you try to turn one forward the other turns backwards
If you stand the machine up and turn the clutch disk assembly by holding one of the half-inch nuts the tires should turn regardless what direction you turn the clutch disk assembly if it doesn’t then you probably have something locked up in your differential or in your chain case. Let me know what you find out. Jim
@@jimjackson9381 @Jim Jackson it's been sitting for about 10 years in a building and has never had the differential /gear lubricant changed. It worked great when my grandpa parked it
hello I have a problem with the snapper when pushing by hand the wheels are blocked impossible to move the mower what is the reason for the differential? thanks in advance
There could be a lot of reasons it’s hard for me to guess without seeing the machine the chain case could have a broken chain. The differential could be a bad gear or a broken chain. You could have a bad bushing in one of the fenders, locking it up it move under power with the engine running or is it locked up that way also? Jim
@@jimjackson9381 thank you for your answer, when I stop the engine the wheels remain blocked impossible to push the mower by hand by lifting the mower I can turn one wheel but the other wheel turns in the opposite direction I don't know if I am clear in the explanation 😬
@@benchapman7459 that’s normal that should do that but if you try to turn both tires at the same time, it should make the chain case turn feel to see if the rubber wheel is up against the drive disk on the bottom of the engine or if there’s a gap between the two when it’s in neutral
Yes there is there’s one on your left fender bushing for your axle some machines have them on your shift handle and while you have a standing up check and fill if needed your differential and chain case. Jim
Well I might need a little more information than that what style of machine are you having trouble with pictures would really help you can send them to my email which is jimsfixitshop@gmail.Com Does it shift into reverse or are you having trouble shifting? Have you watched video number 70 and tightened your yolk spring? Does it move in the forward gears and just not reverse? . Jim
I opened my difurntual case up. I did not see anything wrong. my mower will go in 4th or 5th but not 1st,2nd,3rd, or reverse any answers to this problem? video is very helpful.
Stand mower up, get help pushing the clutch pedal. Move the shifter thru the gears. back the pedal off 1" and see if there is a difference. If not, release the lh boot camp at the middle gear drive and move the boot out of the way and see if you have a clean hex shaft or if you have debris build up from a broken boot.
Well it sounds like you may be taking it apart this winter and seeing what’s wrong with it if it lasts that long fall is the busiest time of the year that I use mine. Jim
Stopped going up my driveway again. Just like it did before replacing the Clutch disk. The Clutch disk is still in good shape. What is happening ? Smelled a burning smell too.
OK if you watch the video number 70 and tightening the yoke spring is not helping I have a couple other videos I would like you to watch that may point out issues you may have one is 96 another is 132. Another is 182. Check them out and see if they help and let me know. Jim.
You can find all the parts and numbers you need from Parts Tree.Com. out of Texas but you will need your model number, I don’t have your model number so I can’t tell you what you need. Jim
Hello, Jim. Great video. I have a 2007 Snapper 30" RER that I bought used early last winter. I did some basic repairs on it, seat, blade sharpened, put on a new pully cover and left it sitting to use this Spring. With the engine off, I noticed the mower didn't want to roll forward or back while in neutral so, I turned it on and it moves in reverse but it won't move forward in any of the 5 forward speeds. The rear wheels are locked as if the mower was in "park". The realize there's no park but anyway, that's the only way I can describe it. I made sure the brake was off and there are no obstructions whatsoever underneath the mower. What's your take on this? Thanks in advance - Ana's husband.
Watch video number 70 and tighten your Yorkspring all the way and let me know if that helps you and you could send me a picture of the clutch disk so I can see how badly worn it is. Jim
Several things could cause this issue your shift handle itself where it rotates inside of the spring could be rusted and giving you issues it could be any of the four joints on the two linkage is giving you a problem or it could be the chain case itself is not sliding properly on the hexagon you need to pull the boots back and clean and grease the tube. Jim
Hey, say you’re supposed to take both plugs out fill through the top holes until it starts to come out the bottom hole and then put the plugs back in. I just take out the bottom plug and fill it until it starts to come out same with the chain case. Jim.
oh my gosh thank you for set a quick response. do you use 90 weight gear oil? it blows my mind with RU-vidrs with so many followers actually take the time to get back to people who follow them.. I am fixing to help my neighbor who is a widower and her mower will go in reverse but it stopped going forward. I think I have learned enough from watching your videos to actually conquer maybe the problem... God bless, and thank you for what you do...
Hi Jim, love your videos. They have been a great help as I’m storing an old sr1028. I need advise on replacing the motor that locked up after I was finally able to get it running and the clutch, deck belt and a few other parts were replaced. The engine wasn’t the original and it was a 12.5 hp Briggs. I won’t to buy a replacement motor and I found a new 6.5 hp vertical shaft for $99 at harbor freight. My question is will 6.5 hp pull this mower? Thanks
Kevelin D Kinamore Sr Hi Kevelin I am not sure what a 6 1/2 horse would do maybe if your yard was totally flat and all you were going to do is mow the grass it might be OK, but if you have any hills or if you wanted to bag leaves I don’t think a six and half horse is going to handle the load. Thanks Jim
Walter Hi Walter I’ve got a 12 1/2 horse on mine and I’m having no issues at all like you were talking about. Try loosening the yoke spring and see if that helps. Thanks Jim
Thanks for the help, sir. My Snapper ST2446 46-" mower began surging while I was mowing. When I pressed the pedal, the mower would hesitate for a second before final engaging and jerking forward. It finally totally stopped engaging, and now won't move at all, either forward or backwards. Any thoughts or suggestions?
It’s hard for me to guess what’s wrong with your machine not being able to look at it myself, I guess I would stand it up and start checking to see if you have any damage to your differential cover, due to side play and the chain cutting through it That will lock up your machine and I guess you just have to start taking it apart and looking for the problem. Jim
Stand your machine up pull out the lower black plastic plug and squirt some of the double ought lube into the differential and or chain case until it’s fall to the bottom of the hole and reinsert the black plastic plug. Jim
Installed a new clutch on my 28" snapper mower, now, even in nuetral, the tires won't turn at all in tandem. I can't see anything wrong and the mower was fine with the old clutch
Jim, thanks for sharing. I will have to run through the steps on mine. The fly in the ointment for me, mower was riding great in backyard. Took through my gate to begin the front yard, set the brake, got off tractor to close gate. Got back on pushed on brake to release and put into gear, mower would not move. Tried reverse and alother gears, nothing. Looked down at brake pedal and noticed the cable had slack. Is it possible for the brakes to lock up?? If so what is the plan of attack?
John Dunbar Hi John it’s Jim First off stand your machine up and see if your cable has broken or came loose somewhere’s and look to see if you can find anything else that is broken or missing and let me know. Jim
Just started following your instructions. Mower now will go but very slowly. Also when i have the mower in park position i can still roll it? Other videos i watched mentioned maybe a spring?
Aarron E Hi it’s Jim If you haven’t already watched a video on number 70 and 182, As far as your machine rolling in park some do my 33 inch does. If it never used to check your yoke and make sure it’s in the proper location with your chain case. Jim
The brake is engaged and is keeping the clutch disc from spinning but the tractor still rolls = problem with differential? Tractor barely drives. Have no issue with drive plate and clutch disc. When wheels are pushed in same direction the clutch disc does not spin
You need to see video no. 132 it will help you understand your drive train and troubleshoot it let me know if you need any further assistance. Thanks Jim
First snapper i ever owned Oil on the pully under engine and the wheel looks oily and will move but it's slipping I don't know were the oil is coming from
Well typically it is the lip seal on the crankshaft in the bottom of the engine that’s allowing the oil to leak down and get on your drive disk you may have to pull the engine out and set it on the bench and check it for leakage. Jim
I have a snapper very similar to the one you have there. When I am in gear and I let the clutch out it doesn't engage all the way. if I rock it forward it starts to engage and then moves. It never did that before but I mowed for probably 4 hours straight yesterday and that's when it started. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Toby
Hi Jim. I just bought a like new 28 inch rear engine Snapper. When I push the brake pedal in and out of in drive, I have to release the brake pedal almost the whole way to achieve movement, then it lunges forward like I'm popping the clutch. What do I need to adjust? Mark B.
Mark Bell Well it could be your clutch disk causing an issue, but I don’t know if you have a solid clutch or a soft start clutch if you have a solid clutch your spring could be too tight, or it could be caused by the yoke is in bad shape and needs to be replaced or the yolk bushings. Jim
Jim, Thanks for all your info. I have a machine that is like the cutaway. Forward gears work fine but when I put it into rev, it makes a fairly loud, thin metal rattling noise but does not move. Any thoughts?
I have the same model in your video. My issue is something produced alot of white smoke and stopped moving. I bought the wheel with rubber on it. Of course it did not come with that friction lining. However the original one did not have any in it? What I have discovered in when i rotate both wheel s in the same direction, it sounds rough and the clutch does not turn. Could this be a chain/sprocket issue inside the case the clutch attatches to? Thanks for your input or anybody else.
I have a video on this but I’ll explain it to you, stand your machine up and put it in neutral loosen the clamps on one of your boots so you can see the hexagon tube underneath of it turn the clutch disk if the tube turns while you’re turning the clutch disk your chain case is OK the problem is inside of the differential. If you turn the clutch disk and a hexagon chef does not turn then the chain broke inside of the chain case. Let me know what you find out. Jim

Jim the transmission just locked up today did the sane on both machines 1433. Was able to get the one with the 16 hp unlocked by oiling the chain case and transmission but the 17 hp not yet but I did not oil the chain case yet. Should I try it?
@@jamesmccarroll9925 yes I would definitely try putting some oil in there. If it’s locked up, it could be the bearings are shot or the issue could be in the differential. Let me know what you. Jim
@jimjackson9381 hey Jim thanks for advice, but my boots are off on both machines, so my guess all the oil over time in the trannies, either splashed out or was just low and I never topped them off, yes I did fill both transmissions and both chain cases, was able to get the 16.5 going but have to put another clutch in, didn't glue the inner ring in when replaced the old clutch got another clutch coming thru Amazon. Now the 17 after thinking back on some of the things you coverd in your infor to video on machine won't move or shift, I stood the machine up used a pair of vice grip lock pliers attempted to turn the axle, it moved a little relocated the grip tried again and the axle turned, then I let the machine down let it sit for a minute started the machine shifted thru the gears nice and smooth, I would say low oil.in the chain case and transmission caused a seizer in the transmission, but thank God everything is functioning as it should, lesson learned do better at servicing my machine. Thanks Jim for your keen insight. Appreciate it.
@jimjackson9381 and really without that cut away of the transmission I would not have understood exactly what I was to look for, your advice saved me purchasing another mower.

You’re awesome! I’m trouble shooting my ReR getting bogged off the line on a little hill or under any sort of resistance. It has a 13hp Tecumseh on it so I am guessing it’s slipping?
Watch video number 70 if your subscriber it’ll help you find it easier and tighten your yoke spring that should take care of your issue if it doesn’t get back with me. Jim
With your snapper standing up on its rear bumpers if you can slide the rear tires from side to Side more than 1/32 of an inch it needs to be shimmed. Jim
Hi Jim my father in law just gave me a one but I cant get it into neutral the clutch looks like it's in good shape .once you start the engine it will go in gear but when the engine is not running I cant get it into neutral any advice would be helpful thanks
Michael Setliff Unhook the boots from the chain case clean and grease the hexagon two and see if that helps do both sides, if that doesn’t help take the linkage off of the backside of the shifter and see if that will move freely on its own they usually will rust up. let me know which find out.Jim
I just discovered snapper and want the rear engine rig. That drive system is a design from the 1800's, I have seen it in museums. Would you say it is more reliable than all the MTD hydro or gear transmissions that are in the basic rider mowers? Looks like it could be quite sturdy if the rubber drive disk is easy to change and reasonably priced [And made well] Thanks!
Snapper 12/28 mfg 2009. Disc thrust washer and cover fell off hub. 4 nuts gone ruin disc ??and one studemotly free clutch. The brake is inside the friction missing,, how to get en 2 spro😢Chet’s via chain😮 , hou to rlarge 15/16 nut off? Yea every time I try I feel live tension between
hello , my name is paul i have one of these tractors and i have the main case apart and i see the teeth that are on the big gear are real sharp and real thin is that worn out everything else looks real good
Garnet Y. Hi it’s Jim And yes here is worn out, they should have about 1/16 inch wide flat on the end of the tooth, You can order them parts from Parts Tree.Com. or Amazon or eBay thanks for viewing and I hope you’re a subscriber. Thanks Jim
Just bought a new old snapper and I'm pretty sure it went underwater at one point now I think the gear shifter is rusted solid do you have a video that would be helpful or any suggestions
my snapper RER E3313, was driving perfect... But after replacing V belt and tensioning it.. Ive lost all forwards gears.... Reverse is fine, But no forward gears... Please help 😂
@@jimjackson9381 i removed nothing.. Original belt snapped, So i bought a replacement, And its about an inch longer, So i put the shims inbetween the middle pole of the frame, to tension the belt.. and now i have no forwards drive.... the drive disk just slips... I think i need to slacken the clutch cable a little.. But i have no idea how to...
@@RGD-Audio-Repairs on the backside of your pedal where the cable goes through there should be some Ferrells you have to take the rubber pad off the steel pedal, pull the cable out of the pedal and move some of the Farrells in front of the pedal and put it back together and try it how many you have to move I would start with two and see how it runs you may have to move more. Jim.
When going forward every 3 seconds or so the machine slips, I installed a new drive disc thinking that was the problem, it was not. When I put in reverse I hear a lot of grinding. I pull it out and throw it back in and it goes. Is the problem with my differential?
I went to move my snapper in neutral and the mower will not move either way. If I jack up one side I can move it can you tell me whats going on. Thanks. Jim
Steve Robbins Will your machine move if the engine is running and it’s in gear will it move on its own power. Some of these questions are hard to answer when I don’t have the machine if you lift one tire off the ground and then you can move your machine yes sounds like your drivetrain could be locked up or you may have broken a chain either in your differential or chain case. But that is only if the machine will not move on its own when it’s running. Jim
Steve Robbins Hi Steve it’s Jim You could have one of your chains broke that is binding things up and not allowing you to push it, but if you can start the engine and it drives all right then it’s not a broken chain you have another issue how does it act when you try to drive it.
Hi Steve it’s Jim If you haven’t already watch video number 253 it will explain how to adjust your chain case so it is where it supposed to be so you have neutral and you can roll your machine around see if that helps. Jim
mine will move then after a while it dont wanna move if you help it it will if i get off it it will move then when i sit on it will slow down its the 2nd trans doing same thing
ben hall Hi it's Jim If you haven't already I would like you to watch video number 70 and 132 they will explain how the drivetrain works and how to adjust it. Thanks Jim
