The NCAA gives athletes five years to compete in four seasons while officially representing their school, with the fifth year being a "red-shirt" year. A red-shirt year gives athletes (oftentimes freshmen) the opportunity to acclimate to the higher intensity of college wrestling by competing independently of their school. When a college wrestler registers for a tournament unaffiliated with their school, they are referred to as unattached.
So is the fifth "red shirt" year that of a High School student testing College wrestling? I don't recall any HS students taking five years back my day. OTOH sometimes a College student could continue as an undergraduate for a bit longer than the usual four.
@@rparl NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association, which was the opening context of my reply. There is no concept of a red shirt in high school. Having said that, if by chance you happen to be from the UK, I can understand why my reply might be confusing since my use of the word "school" would necessarily imply grade school there, whereas here in the States "school" can be used to mean "university" as well.
@@MidwestWrestle Now I understand. The "red shirt" fifth year for the freshman who's experimenting while not representing the school (college or university) precedes rather than trails the years of eligibility. It never occurred to me that it could come before. ... ... The more you know. Thanks.
