Interesting! I wasn't aware that bar soap had (has?) tallow in it. I've certainly used a lot of Dial Gold in my lifetime but mostly before I started shaving. Thanks for the video!
Yeah I’m not sure if Dial still has tallow in it or not. I’d have to go back and look at a new bar. Historically, bar soap was mostly tallow. Hell, from the 1700s-1930s, a bar soap was basically a solid block of tallow of some variety or another. Fun facts!
I find it hilarious that me and you have so much in common with regards to our thoughts on wet shaving. I feel the same way about using Canned Shaving Cream with safety razors, it's basically fine. People moved on to Canned shaving cream in droves back in the day, people loved innovation back then. The "future is here" kind of mentality. The same thing happened when Cartridge razors came out, people moved on in droves. I love using Canned foam with safety razors, it works just fine and makes shaving convenient. As for my thoughts on the Fatboy vs the Slim Adjustable. I also think the Fatboy is overrated, it started Gillette off on the path to Adjustable razors but it was a stepping stone. The Slim is basically better in every way except build quality which of course any company would look to reduce costs. My personal favorite is actually the Gillette Super 109 or 84. The plastic base plate Super Adjustable also works really well and feels more like a modern safety razor. So yeah I treat wet shaving as a hobby but I'm in not means a snob about it. Use what works for you and just have at it. Don't be opinionated about a hobby.
I’m not even super convinced that the slim adjustable is any less durable or lower quality than the fatboy. Yes it uses cheaper parts but they still seem plenty durable to me. I personally won’t touch the super adjustables because of the aluminum. But that’s just a personal preference…
@@soapthing I mean there's still a boat load of Super Adjustables and newer Aluminum handle flare tips out there. So whatever coating Gillette used held up really well. My Dad's 78 Super Adjustable still looks like it's new, same with his 79 Atra.
Aside from using 35 year old soaps (That's crazy!) I do use bar soaps and a brush. I am pretty cheap and so that is how I would shave vs using shave foam. Foam is too expensive and does not provide much in the way of any sane slickness or cushion once one figures out using a brush. Now the aftershave, I think probably that aftershave routine you used for this video, there are things such as witchhazel which I use which are going to be far cheaper, I'd wager. Witchhazel doesn't have much in the way of scent but its effective and cheap. Aloe does pretty much the same, hell I even did an experiment shave with nothing but aloe! Maybe try exotic ways to shave! 🤣 Nice video, hope to see more.
You do make a valid point. If you’re REALLY trying to keep the cost down, you could certainly do worse than a bar of soap. It’s an effective way to shave that’s for sure.
Yeah the packaging brings back memories. I’m not sure you could convince anybody to dupe Dial Gold, it’s a bit of a polarizing scent. But stranger things have happened. Thanks for watching!
I would have never thought to use a bar of Dial soap, I’m more of a Lever 2000 man myself! For the hell of it, I tried using Dove. According to my mother, my grandfather used a bar of Dove soap and a Gillette Slim. When I got my hands on a Slim several months ago, I had to try it out. Loaded up one of my brushes and face lathered and was surprised. It's not stupid if it works!
Never tried Lever 2000. I’ll have to investigate. I think a lot more people shave this way than we realize. Some people are more proud of it than others.
Solid shave with that dial soap bro. Glad to see it went well, I know a few people that shave like that. I was never a fan either of applying balm after a splash, it seems pointless to me. Good stuff man, take care!
A nice shave!! I’ve tried the bar soap thing, just end up getting all dried out, that’s why I’m pretty picky with what I use. Have a great Saturday Ben!
You must have sensitive skin my friend. You’re not the first person to mention dry skin after shaving this way. I actually have skin that produces too much oils, so it probably didn’t effect me the same way.
@@soapthing I sure do, very sensitive skin, it’s weird though, I don’t ever get frag reactions, but I have to be careful with that razors and soaps I use though.
I get Afta original at my local grocery store 🤷🏻♂️. Must be a regional thing. Actually no the soap did not dry my skin out afterwards, but I have fairly robust skin so don’t take my word for it.
