According to the FAA, the primary purpose of ATC is to prevent collisions, organize and expedite the flow of air traffic, and provide information and other support for pilots. That's great for airspace around fixed airfields on landmasses like North America, but what about flight operations around ships at sea?
On this episode, retired U.S. Navy lieutenant commander Susan "CATCC Sue" Beckman of PBS Carrier series fame, joins us to discuss the role the carrier air traffic control center plays during flight operations around U.S. aircraft carriers day or night, in all weather conditions.
Listener inquiries addressed on this episode include flight deck shooter stances, how to confirm air-to-air and -ground weapons effectiveness, and why air-to-air missiles don't use radar midcourse and then IR or TV terminal guidance when prosecuting a target.
Episode artwork adapted by Janek Krause. Bumper music by Jaime Lopez / announcements by Clint Bell.

This is one of the most unique podcast I've ever come across. I love aircraft of all types, and the diversity of it and the pilot's perspective is unmatched.

Thank you SUE! Like most say, pilots, nfo’s and aircrew get the glory. But they can’t get anything done if the planes aren’t fixed, fueled and deconflicted. Thank you for an entire adult life making flight safe and expeditious.

Great to hear and see you again Susan! I'm one of those who watched Carrier on PBS and then found it available on Apple TV. Episode 7 - Rites Of Passage - Second Half: Pitching Deck. Y-O-W-S-E-R!!! There was that one aviator who said he just wanted to find a corner and have his aneurism. Meanwhile you were sending doses of positive vibes. Great Work!!! Blue skies!!! Love your pod cast! Its good to see that another SHWFOTShrike make good after service. I was with 94 when we transitioned from the A-7 to F/A-18's...good memories connected with the Mighty Shrikes. We crossed the line in '84 an my wog to shellback experience was vastly different than that shown in the show...goes to show that its just no longer our Navy anymore!

Happy birthday to your mom, Jello. Goodnight Sue, (can't help but think of the Waltons who did that whole bit. Man I'm old). This was just grand. What an insight to a world very few of us know about, even those of us who've been on ship, (I was a maintainer with VF-142, USS Eisenhower, '83-'86). I enjoyed this very much.

Great episode, back in my simming days on Janes F-18 & MS Flight Sim, the "squadron" I was in, we would do carrier quals and people would take turns being the CATC and I found it a lot of fun. Even listening to our local military ATC you can learn so much.

Hello Mr. Aiello. Thank you for your podcast. I am sure you are aware of the heroics Ukrainian fighter pilots are performing right now. Almost a month in and still they go out night after night against insurmountable odds to lay their life on the line to protect the safety of their people. Modern jets clashing on this scale is unique. I understand you don't want to get into current political situations on your podcast but I am desperately looking forward to the episode I'm sure you will make it about it one day. Again thanks for all the work you do!

7:22 the Alamo D is a fairly long range IR missile, given a decent budget that would be a candidate for a long range IR/Data link midsole
