For the "Good of the order": While commonly referred to as such, what you called an "ash pocket" (at 1:53 of this video and in many others) is a spherulite composed of cristobalite and is formed within the obsidian at high temperature. While cristobalites can be found in volcanic ash, those found in obsidian, including snowflake obsidian, did not originate in any ash produced by the parent volcano and referring to them as "ash" obfuscates their unique origin. (Knowing this, I admit, is unlikely to improve anyones knapping but, just the same...)

Good thing about obsidian is that the cuts don't hurt until later.

I been trying to incorporate your swiping technique. Not easy with a round headed bopper but I found a nice natural hammer stone that allows me to do this. Seems like it works fairly enough. Until, of course, I drove a flake into my fingertip. Blood juice everywhere. Yep.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Yikes
@GL4speed
@GL4speed Год назад
You can use the side of the bopper if you hold it vertically. The issue is it that it will pull against the cap and make it come off. If your bopper is solid copper it should hold up fine.

If you can get access to “gritty” Sandstone it is really good for brushing flakes off Obsidian and Dacite. I have tried a a piece of grinding wheel but rounded river rock sandstone is very much better.

I had some stuff just like that, was hard to get consistent flakes so I slabbed it on my tile saw and that helped.

So I had bought a 12” rod of 2” aluminum. I cut off about 3” and wrapped with tape to give your method a try. Then realized your tool is smaller diameter. So ordered 1.5” diameter rod. I have some Georgetown coming this week so I hope the weather stays over 40 so I can go out to my pile and make some more gravel.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
The 2" diameter should work. Just put a chamfer all the way around on the end so the diameter is smaller on the striking surface.

That guy on Hunt Primitive or whatever gave you credit for inventing the indirect leg technique... that's how I got here... He doesn't do enough napping and yapping on that channel I don't know how he gets the millions of views.

Ryan has lots of views because of his hunting videos. Of course, he puts in a tremendous amount of hours into all sorts of primitive skills, so that helps too.

looks like you have a piece of what we used to call green sheen obsidian which looks mostly gray but has a slight green hue to it with darker gray to black banding through it. spalling it can be very miserable and those diving flakes you mentiion are constant no matter what size the piece is. it really has a mind of its own. i have snapped so many pieces and just been so frustrated with it but i just keep trying to figure this type out. we got ours from northern ca shasta area and central oregon. anywatyall im saying is im very familiar with this stuff and still question whether or not im causing the fractures or that they are already hidden in there. i believe its both

As always great vids. The question I have is it sure looks like dacite I've knapped. How do you compare the 2 ? Just wondering. Thx
@KnapperJackCrafty

A friend gave me some obsidian like that. He bought it to learn on and he was very disappointed. He brought it to me to at least make one point if I could. I did make a couple but it was horrific to work. It seemed porous in a way. I had a good spall the same size and it felt and sounded noticeably more solid. I wondered if the less glossy appearance was a clue to micro inclusions of ash that would cause internal bonding issues as a result. I was hollering at you every time you picked at those flakes with your finger. We all do it but obsidian makes me break out my most respectful personality when I work it.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
No idea. I know that this stuff is as variable as chert sometimes. I've worked a bunch of all types of obsidian and most is not consistent.

Years ago , football players used to spray stickem on their gloves to facilitate catching the ball. Spray one or two fingers or a spot on your palm , with some experimentation you could find something comfortable. New content for a future video ?
