Thanks Gina!! I am looking for something other than polycrylic and liqutex is what I had planned to try! Glad to know it can be poured on! ❤

This stuff self levels really well if you stop while it's still really wet. I tend to get one area a little too thin, but that can be corrected the next go around. It dries fast, and it is the glossiest of any finish I've tried. And I compared 4.

Then my second coats pull the dried paint off the canvas. Also what should I clear with. They are made of silicone, that’s why they are clear. I first found them on RU-vid when I was watching a video about how to get a smooth coat of gesso. They are great for that too and they really reduce the amt of product you use and they clean off beautifully. I’m sure I got mine at Amazon but I can’t remember what they are called, sorry.

Thanks for sharing your experiment, Gina. I recently got the Liquitex High Gloss Varnish and can't say I'm wildly impressed. It's much cheaper and easier to just use a spray gloss varnish which will give a similar effect, doesn't require buying brushes or silicone pads, doesn't require cleaning up and doesn't bubble. But, like you, I enjoy experimenting :-) Prior to purchasing this product, I was using Liquitex Pouring Medium which I adore...not just for pouring paint (it's intended purpose), but as a varnish. Although Liquitex doesn't recommend using it as a varnish, I think it does a MUCH better job (looks like resin) after just a couple of coats....and it stands the test of time. The ONLY disadvantage I can see is that the Pouring Medium doesn't contain any anti-UV protection.....whatever that means in reality LOL! For me, the advantages are many: 1) Unlike the Liquitex Varnish (maybe it can be used in other ways, I don't know), it can be used for its intended purpose; a glossy medium for pouring paint; 2) It's a lot more forgiving to apply as it's not only self-leveling so brush strokes do not show, but it has a much longer drying time so one can rework areas: 3) It can be applied thickly if one chooses; and 4) After it cures, it's VERY tough and waterproof. Happy creating!

Its also safer than resin, so that is a plus for a lot of people. With resin you really should use proper PPE which includes a respirator that is $100+, and you shouldnt ever pour resin in your house especially if you have kids or pets. Resin is amazing but there are unfortunately health hazards attached that a lot of people arent aware of (even if the bottles say "non toxic")😞 So the trade off is spending more time and money with extra steps for a safer sealing option.

HI Gina. Great comparison. I just bought a different liquitex varnish called "High Gloss". I have been using the Gloss Brilliant in the past with good success. Have you seen or tried the high gloss product?
@bonesgirl302
@bonesgirl302 5 лет назад
I have tried the High Gloss by Liquitex. It’s very glossy and if you’re hanging it in an area where the outside light will reflect off the painting, it’s too bright.

I used about 5 coats of the Liquitex and it looks like I used resin. I saw a video on RU-vid but don't remember who did it.

Laryn Ann Tapp what’s the best way to get the glossiest finish on an acrylic painting, not pour. I’m new to canvas and I’m in the middle of a very special painting and this one cannot be companied
@larynanntapp6333

@@AutoBodyEverything I found this on RU-vid...link is below. I also found a guy that had 6 paintings lined up and would use the same method...wipe it on, go sit in his recliner for 20 minutes and watch TV, apply another coat, repeat! I don't have that link for his. In this link she mentions using rags like old tshirts that have been washed 1000 times and have no lint...that didn't work for me..I got lint. I use the shop towels...buy them at Walmart. The only thing I've changed is that I start with a couple of coats of 50/50...Liquitex Gloss and distilled water. Then I have a condiment bottle with a 70/30 ratio...few coats of it. A third bottle has 90/10 ratio and a couple of coats of that to finish it off. With each mixture, I pour some into a shallow plastic cup and let it sit inside of a sealed ziploc bag so the bubbles dissipate. When I'm ready to use it, I stir it very gently with a plastic spoon or craft stick...rarely causes bubbles. I keep a toothpick handy if any show up after I wipe on the gloss. As long as the ziploc bag is sealed, I can use that plastic cup for weeks. A wooden craft stick will mold over time if I leave it in the bag. I have also used the Saran Cling wrap over that cup as extra precaution even though it's in the ziploc bag. Occasionally, the mixture in the cup will turn a tad bit blue but it doesn't stain my painting. I will use the same rag in a day...just put it in the ziploc bag. When the cup is empty, refill from the condiment bottle and it's ready the next day. I do an assembly line approach. But being terminally ill, I don't always get all the coats on in one evening or day. I drape a piece of lightweight fabric over them keep dust and dog hair off so I don't have to clean them again. As long as the last coat you put on is dry, the fabric doesn't stick to my paintings. Please feel free to look me up on Facebook and if you have any questions, you can send them to me on Messenger. Hope this helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KvkIkphbaJ8.html

@@AutoBodyEverything Actually, the best gloss finish would be resin. I don't use it...can't afford it and can't handle the smell of it. If you can, that is the best method. The link and first reply is how I work around using resin. It also works with Minwax Polycrilic and distilled water which I have used when I ran out of Liquitex Gloss.

Laryn Ann Tapp .... can Liquitex clear gesso be used as an isolation coat? Can I use this to shield my acrylic work so that my next layer does not smear and ruin the previous work?
@larynanntapp6333
@larynanntapp6333 4 года назад
@@AutoBodyEverything I honestly don't know. Gesso is thick and would be a good shield. But I use the white on wood and after putting a coat on, have to sand it. Getting an even coat would be difficult. If you can do a test on a small canvas, that's how I check to see if something works. Just off the top of my head, I would go with something thinner that you can maneuver easily since Gesso is thicker. I've never been able to put a coat on that was smooth. One or two coats of Minwax Polycrilic or Liquitex would work between your layers. Might want to ask around..other than a test piece, I wouldn't be comfortable recommending it.

How to protect painting from the dust that sits after you allow varnish to dry.. I don’t know how to clean that any help?
@larynanntapp6333
@larynanntapp6333 4 года назад
To clean it before varnishing, I put a small amount of Dawn in the palm of my hand, moisten it and run it all over the canvas several times...rinse under running tepid water. I blot it dry and in case there's any lingering moisture, I set it on my dryer and run it for a cycle...gets rid of moisture and tightens the canvas (and sometimes makes me do laundry!). I gloss coat it the next day..usually. If I don't get to it, I drape a lightweight piece of fabric over it and put a sticky note on it that says Clean. I can't trust my memory on whether I cleaned it or not. You can also drape the fabric over it in between coats of varnish as long as it's dry. Keeps dust and dog hair off of it. If I discover a dog hair after I varnish it, I charge extra!! 😅

Maybe on your small piece it worked nicely but I just ruined a painting I worked weeks on with this crap! I used the silicone make up applicator and it seemed to work nicely till I lifted the thing up and saw the multi level well defined lines because the stuff doesn't self level, it doesn't give you any real work time. The first layer was pretty good but for those above mentioned parts as I added layers to smooth it out and get a consistent look it magnified the flaws till I could do no more to fix it. its now in my trash can! I will never use that product again.

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that! I have been using a car wash sponge covered in a nylon stocking to varnish big paintings and I get no streaks. I wouldn’t use the silicone applicator on a bigger piece. The sponge works great for smaller paintings too. One or two swipes and you’re done.
