What an exciting day. This morning, the sparkies arrived with a trailer load full of solar panels and gear for my garage, car port and shed. All roofs will be covered with solar panels making enough energy for house, garage and property.
I'm a tight observer and try to find new things, I can learn. I'm getting a new rail system, new cabling, two new solar charge controller and of course new solar panels. Hyundai Shingled (400W) and Phono Half-Cut panels with 540W (which we will also quickly test).

Loving the new panels you have. mine are used 230 watt panels but with my angle they produce in rain and cloudy days. I thought on a cloudy day I would loose a lot. full sun right now I get up to 7500 watts on cloudy I get almost 7000 and raining today I get 6000 so I am super happy. cant wait to see yours running. I think since I have good distance from trees the sun is reflecting and that is why I get such good numbers on rainy or cloudy days.

Just a heads up Andy, last year 650 watt panels got introduced, this year the competitors are catching up. Next year they will be more available in Asia, not sure about Australia. These new panels work with updated versions of hybrid inverters. The ongrid inverters are still not upgraded. Each panel produces about 25amps, most charge controllers/inverters previously could not handle that amp input. Be mindful for any future expansion for bigger panels

Looking good so far Andy. The difference in regulations is quite shocking. In the UK we need main DC & AC isolator switches and an AC breaker in the house distribution box and that's all. No earthing or fuses. The engineer that helped me upgrade the house roof with Trina solar panels advised me not to earth my used gumtree system as it will cause ground faults with the inverter or cause the breaker in the distribution box to trip. Having said that, when I clean my used gumtree (Old Phono Solar) panels I get a very light shock off of them, just a wee tickle that makes me giggle lol. When I measure panel to lader with a multi meter it shows no DC voltage but reads approx 30-40v AC. Is this the AC ripple you have spoken about in your previous videos? Shine on dear boy, love from cold and soggy Scotty'land. Gary.

congrats to brand new > 14kWp in sunny down under! This will be a good upgrade, well worth it. I got 13.6kW by 36 2m² panels on a regular Germam roof, concrete tiles, "Frankfurter Pfanne", 10m to 13m height. The team (4 people) arrived after 10:15 with one single Sprinter and were ready installing all the PV panels ca.17:00 . Unfortunately no inverter and accu currently available here. Hopefully next year. And starting next year, we have not to pay this ugly MWSt for PV installations.

Yah, 29 kilos is heavy... 64lbs! Well into the residential-panel-space and out of the one-person DIY space. That's why I wound up doing my DIY roof upgrade with 320W panels (40lbs), since it was just me and my brother putting them up. Your test results are about what I would expect. Maybe count the bypass diodes too... should be either 3 or 6. Basically any shading on even a single cell will take out the entire sub-string (one sub-string per bypass diode). The cloudy-day performance of those panels should be really good though. i.e. the situation where the cloud cover causes the light to just come from the entire sky and not throw shadows instead of from direct sun. In that situation the cells are not 'shaded' and their true performance will come to light. Because of that, your overall energy production ought to be excellent! There is an argument here for using slightly smaller panels to help deal with the variable shading... fewer cells per bypass diode (maybe), though in the grand scheme of things I don't think it would make that big of a difference. Your next step? Tree trimming :-) -Matt

Wow, interesting day Andy. At 12:15 where you point out that it's ok to use Breakers rather than fuses in your combiner box, and fuses are typically intended to be used for short-circuit protection in circuits where inrush current could be thousands of amps to protect circuit breakers, which are typically used for overload protection unless they are 'Instantaneous trip'; I wonder if that is because solar panels are limited in the the amount of in-rush current they can produce? It would be interesting to calculate or measure what the maximum peak current of a large string into a short circuit would be. Maybe that's something Andy 2 could do after several spats?
@boatelectricaldiy
@boatelectricaldiy Год назад
Jack I've installed a 230 000 volt circuit breaker in a sub station. A circuit breaker is a superior product that can do anything a fuse can do.
@gubbernl
@gubbernl Год назад
See 14:01, max current for each panel/ string = 13.64A, times the number of parallel strings.
@jackoneil3933
@jackoneil3933 Год назад
@@gubbernl Thanks, I got that from the video, and perhaps I was not clear enough when I mentioned 'Peak Current'. What I meant was the total instantaneous current of a string in full sunlight into a short circuit similar to shorting a capacitor or battery; which can initially be much higher than continuous current into a short. Might you, Andy or someone know what the properties of solar panels and if they can produce instantaneous currents much higher than rated maximum current as a capacitor might? As a solar panel design is much like a capacitor, I wondered if that is the case? The reason the maximum instantaneous current into a short circuit is important when considering breakers in an electrical supply system, is that whatever device that provides short circuit protection has to be able to withstand and interrupt the instantaneous maximum current the power source can produce, such as from the power grid, battery, generator and etc. A 200amp circuit breaker might be able to interrupt a 1,000amp surge but 10,000 amps might weld the contacts together, preventing the breaker from interrupting a short circuit. Fuses on the other hand burn open and can't fail closed like a breaker. In a solar system such as Andy's, with pretty large strings the breakers in his combiner box should have a much higher current interrupting rating than his solar strings could produce. Lighting welding breaker contacts is another possibility, and another reason why I personally prefer fuses for short circuit protection and breakers for overload protection. Same goes for battery banks the main breakers Andy is using on his battery banks appear to be pretty robust and possibly able to interrupt the max instantaneous current his battery banks can produce.
@evil17
@evil17 Год назад
@@jackoneil3933 if the max current for each panel/string is 13.64A, I cant reason why that should rise any or exceptionally so, except in the case of a direct lightening strike or some other very unfamiliar phenomena.
@jackoneil3933
@jackoneil3933 Год назад
@@evil17 I would expect solar panel in sunlight that was not connected to any load would have a potential charge, like a capacitor, so you should see an initial current discharge higher than it's continuous short circuit output. How much that would be should be related to the capacitance of the panel to store up electrons. I just measured capacitance of a 100W panel at 4 microfarads, so a 500w panel might be 20 microfrads, so 10 panels might be 200mfd. If my estimate is accurate, then nothing to worry about damaging an average DC circuit breaker, and likely why fuses are no longer required. However, it would be interesting if Andy could measure the capacitance of his strings (at night) and how large a spark a string of his old panels would generate if shorted.
