@@kukalakana Yeah that's such dumb logic. Cats can be trained, they just don't want to be. But provide the motivation, usually food, and you can do so, if the cat is motivated enough by it. Ask your dad who he thinks is smarter, the guy who obeys and believes every single thing he is ordered/told (even stupid or bad/dangerous/harmful orders) without thinking, and is easily trained/conditioned, or the guy who thinks for himself, and does whatever he wants.
@@kukalakana I've taught my cats to sit, stand, shake, and come when called. Their motivation is food. 90% of the time they'll only do the tricks when they know I have treats haha. If they do a trick and realize I don't have food to give them, they're indignant.
My blackie picked me, ‘tap tap tapped’ my leg, followed me around the garden center and jumped in my car. Most delightful cat ever, super intelligent affectionate luv bug, played fetch on the lawn with tennis ball, never ran away. Balanced on tops of doors. Congenital heart condition took her early but had four of the most joyful years ever. I still miss her.

I have 6 black cats and stand with you on this. Since I've had them in my house, I've gotten a promotion, and have met many more friends that our family spends time with, as well as better health. They are the most loving of all of my cats (we have 12 so far🤭)
Yes, those two myths are probably the most heart-breaking because that's how many cats end up in shelters. All we can do is spread the truth in hopes of stopping these myths!
There is a shelter by me that won’t adopt out black cats around Halloween-time because people have adopted them around that time to harm them… One of the most senseless and horrible things I’ve ever heard. We learned that when we adopted our beautiful adult black cat in late September, just before Halloween season began 🥺🖤
Please consider adopting a brother/sister for your cat. 😻 Animals thrive on the play, interactions, and cuddles that come with a friend. There are many tutorials online for how to properly introduce them. Find one by a reputable source vs ‘some guy’.
If a second cat doesnt help with that issue there are claims that cats experience less anxiety if they are tugged into a tight onsie. Forgot the manufacturers name but they claim it would help and to me it doesnt seem to be restricive.
Someone threw a black kitten out of a car last year. :( His name is Moon, and he is my baby. We're about to hit our one year anniversary. He's the most affectionate cat I've ever met. I can't imagine life without him.

a couple years back, me and my sister taught our cat who was 8 at the time how to sit. a stubborn and 8 year old cat who had never been trained for anything ever learned how to sit. he comes up to people feet and sits in front of them meowing because he thinks he gets a treat any time he sits. it’s hard to not spoil him with treats. so you can even teach an old cat new tricks
Though to be fair, I've never really had to train mine. I just set them in there and they know what to do. I might just be lucky, though, or the person/place I adopted them from already did the training.
Any animal can be trained. However it's not always garunteed success. Dogs are easier to train than cats, but there is still many dogs that can't be trained either. It's not a species thing. It's just nature.
My cats do NOT ever jump up onto my kitchen cupboards. A stern "NO" and placed back down on the floor is all I did. 12 years on, and they still keep their paws strictly on the floor in our kitchen.
Right! Also, coming when called and reacting to their name is training too. Most cats do both. Teaching them what they can and can’t do is training too. My cat knows very well she can’t jump on the counter. Only difference between dogs and cats is that once I go upstairs, she still does it behind my back.
I know by experience that after having a black male Chantily Tiffany cat for 7 years until he passed and having a solid black female cat and a tuxedo male cat living with me now that I have had NO bad luck from having them. 👍 I love my black cats!! Black cats ARE unluckier than colored cats! I tend to trip over them and kick them at night because I can't see them while walking around in the dark. One of mine took advantage of that and started walking just close enough so my foot would touch him and I'd have to "make it up" to him. I prefer black cats because they're so shiny and silly and all around cuddly.
My daughter can get up off a chair and go to the bathroom and all 5 of her cats will get up, one at a time, and go look for her. If she has closed the door, they have been known to sit outside and call her. We always say if you walk down the hall, and there are 5-6 cats lying in the middle of the floor, we know where my daughter is........LOL
The first cat we got for our daughter when she was 15 would sit outside the bathroom door when my husband was up early showering for work...and lick the door until my husband got done and opened it.

A lot of people just wanted cats to be like dogs, and if they aren't passionate and affectionate enough, they just call them aloof, cruel and lack of empathy because they don't behave like dogs, which pisses me off, look, they are NOT dogs, and do not expect them to be one, they do love their owner, and if you can't feel them, the only thing you should do is keep your mouth shut.

Exactly! I also think that a lot of the people who say that cats are mean or don’t like to be petted etc... try to approach cats like dogs. No, that’s not how that works, you can’t pet a cat like you pet a dog (usually at least). My relationship with the family cat improved tremendously when I learned how to correctly approach a cat and let THEM tell YOU when they want to be petted
Well I can tell you right now that my cats like to follow me around, stay right up under me, be in whatever room I am, stare at me, meow ALL THE TIME, and sometimes my little girl, Shal, demands to be petted lol

Cats arch their back and hiss when ready to fight. Doge throw their back side up and pant when they want to play. It's easy to see the miscommunication. Once they communicate they definitely become bff's.

I used to free feed my cats...with two of them it wasnt an issue cause many tend to self regulate themselves...But the third caused all sorts of problems. If he was bored, he would run to the food bowl, if he was stressed by the other cats...to the food bowl....If he wasnt given attention...to the food bowl....he would literally purr when he started eating lol Anyway, had to change that type of behavior as an owner and never again.

My mother's black cat, aptly named Midnight, was abandoned by his previous owners at a Vets. We believe it might be a case of an alarmingly quickly growing stigma around black cats; that they don't selfie very well. Insane, right? Anyway, he's now my mother's 3rd child and loves posing for cameras.
(2-17-23) I went to our local shelter a couple of years ago to find a cat to adopt. One of the workers there told me about a fairly young all black male cat they had there that most people avoided because of his all-black fur. What a silly superstition! I ended up adopting him and took him home with me that day, and I am soooo glad I did! He is the best cat ever, and I can’t imagine life without him. ❤️
My cat is so bonded with me he follows me everywhere. If I'm not home, he'll meow at my bedroom door until I either "open" it or I come home and call for him. I've had him since I was 5, and I'm almost 18. He's an older cat. He absolutely needs to be held all the time. Once, I was in the process of moving and we were staying with my aunt for the summer, and my dad stayed behind with the old house and my cats, and he told me that Nelix (my cat) meowed at my door the whole time :( It actually made me so sad. He's one of the best cats I could've ever asked for, black or not. He's my favorite baby
Love black cats and never understood why people hang onto silly superstitions about them being unlucky. Ok, they don't instagram well, unless you like black silhouettes, and they can hide in any shadow, ready to grab your ankles in passing, but otherwise, they're just cats like any other. Have one myself, currently racing around the house chasing the laser pointer.
my cats know a lot of things - especially if it has to with food. my cats know “are you hungry?” (probably voice intonation). and they know not to get up onto the counter or when i say, no. So glad you tackled the "cats are jerks" myth early on. I've lived with cats my entire life, and even the most standoffish cat I've owned had her moments of pure love. As for the black cats being bad luck thing, from my perspective that actually has a grain of truth to it. But, that's only because my baby boy Viper is a _massive klutz._ Though in my opinion that just makes him that much more loveable.
Just a little correction here: Witches were seldom persecuted in the Middle Ages. Most cases of witch trials took place in the Early Modern Period. Linking them to the Middle Ages is a Common Myth. ;)

One of my cats learned a couple of tricks because she saw my dog doing it and saw that my dog got a treat for it. She will only do the tricks if I have a treat for her though!
we have several different colored cats, and we have found that black cats are more loving and affectionate than other colors, especially those that have some white markings on them.
I've had a variety of colors (black, white, gray, tuxedo, and calico) and I really think it depends on the individual. My boy Chubbs was a tuxedo and he was the loviest kitty. He even had a bonded friend (Winston, gray) that he gave affection to. I only had them for 2 years and I miss them both a lot.
Great vid, I have 2 cats and I have had cats for many years, I have always loved cats. For this reason I feel I am qualified to say that you need to treat them like any other pet in terms of vet visits. The other side of it is…. I love them because they ask for attention when THEY want it but put up with us petting them when we like. They can look after themselves if needed, but please forgive us humans if we dont have food on hand for them even if they have just eaten. Vege’s are gross for cats, don;t feed your cat them (I am vegetarian myself lol) and ultimately, my black cat is the biggest snuggly fluff ball ever, especially after she has magically eradicated an evil spirit during a random black cat ritual I have no knowledge of. Lol
One thing I remember about black cats is that Temple Grandin said they're the most likely to be chill because they can hide more easily, so don't need to fight back as often when threatened. So you actually can luck out with them more easily in terms of cat temperament. Also, I seem to recall hearing that a black cat's bad luck if its walking trajectory is perpendicular to yours, but good luck if it's parallel to yours, so it's better to have one approach you or walk beside you.
Unless you were our cat Spook. He picked fights with other cats and even dogs despite being declawed in the front. He won every time. Guess being 20 lbs of fat and muscle makes you kinda fearless, huh? 😆

My black cat Sabrina claimed me when I was volunteering at the country shelter? She climbed into my lap and purred and clung to me? I adopted her the next day! Love black cats! ❤️❤️😺😺
I've always grown up knowing I wanted to be a cat owner someday when the time was right (financially, I could be home enough in the daytime, etc.), so I had heard a couple of these myths throughout the years. I was surprised about the dairy thing at first, but since I only buy creamer for my coffee and tea, I'm not worried about giving my Torti girl any of that. What I found to be most interesting is the fact that my kitty wants to be with me when I come home from work (having been gone around 6+ hours), but she'll want her alone time whether I've been at work or home on an off day. In the two weeks we've been together, I find that she comes in solely wanting pets if I give her the space she wants, and I'm the same way, so it works out.
I’ve tried more than once to explain to my elderly neighbor not to give her cats milk. Our cat is also trained to walk on a leash, sit, wait and take. Along with Guard. I’ve got small kids. I trained her with the dogs.
I had a friend in college who told me not to continue the adoption process for my black cat because they're bad luck. In COLLEGE. He's the cleanest cat I've ever had and tries to comfort our dog, a Border Collie/Labrador mix, whenever there is a thunderstorm or fireworks.
The most affectionate cat I've ever met happens to have black fur. Izzy's her name, and she's the second of two furbabies that have claimed my fiancee as their human.
I trained my cat to sit on command and high five me. She learned it in no time! It also made our bond a lot stronger, as she loves training and getting the attention and treats. My other cat though has no interest in training at all.

The pupil is the hole in the iris. The muscle of the iris controls the size of the hole (pupil). So while the pupils get larger and smaller they do no active opening and closing. The rest of your comment is interesting.

I have a 9 month old Bombay cat right now, and for those of you who know they're always pitch plack and known as parlor panthers because they are bred to be mini panthers. In my opinion, black cats are good luck! I've never once had bad luck with any black cat I've ever owned and they've always been the absolute most lovable and ones that develop the deepest and strongest bonds. Just the thought that they'd be a curse is absolutely laughable!!
My calico cat "Shasha" lived to be 23 years old & only seen the vet twice. Once for her miminal shots & fixed. She was stubborn, territorial & extremely smart. She was a picky eater mainly dry food. She was never overweight. We would give her chicken liver ever so often which she loved. I do believe seeing a vet, but vets these days are money driven & push pet insurance knowing it's good business for them on the expense of your pet. I also had a black cat, my Duffy. He was the most sweet, loving & gentle cat. We made the mistake of letting him out. One day he came home, hid for a few days in the basement & was found dead with foam at his mouth. We brought him to the vet, did some tests to find out he ingested a poison which we believed it was the witch, the neighbor in the back who left bait laced with poison. She hated cats & I believe she thought our sweet black Duffy is bad luck. She was old & had came from some impoverish village from the old country. She was not very educated & has many superstitions. Thank God, she was sent to a home & is no longer a threat to our sweet fur babies. My sweet Duff Duff life was cut short.....12 years old.

My cat is waiting by the food bag the whole day just for someone to feed her, and if she gets annoyed, she'll eat something like string and can't digest it and throws it up later. We also have another cat that is her brother and she steals his food when we're not watching, however we catch her sometimes. How can I stop this?
Not a cat trainer, but I have similar issues. Honestly I'm not sure how much you can do aside from managing. Mine likes to chew on cables, so I need to keep them out of her reach as much as I can. And as for stealing her brother's food, why is it sitting out there? My dog would leave her food out for hours, until she was more hungry than she was lazy, and I had to put my foot down and enforce meal times because my cat would steal dog food when she knew I wasn't looking (she would leave crumbs as evidence lol). I have the cutest black cat named Shadow, and he can't meow. This leads to my friends calling him "aggressive", as it sounds like a soft hiss. But really, he's a literal teddy bear, gives me headbutts all the time. He also *loves* my dog Sasha.

something i'd never thought a cat would do: i live in a 115 year old house & from time to time , a bat finds it's way in. my 10 year old cat was in my lap sound asleep, when a bat found it's way in. puss woke immeadiatly & proceeded to chase the bat from furniture, putting on quite a show. a couple minutes later, she knocked the critter out of the air, killed it & ate it. only a few bat parts remained. i've had cats all my life & never imagined such a thing !
The end of number 2: dont leave your cat alone for 8-10 hours. Me: *literally leaves my cats alone for 2 weeks at a time with food while we go camping.* (we have family check on them, so.. yeah.)
Affection from cats can vary per cat and per day. My current cat can be really loving, but usually is quite stand-offish. Like, the whole “don’t touch me” and will basically matrix herself to avoid being pet. Hell, certain times of day she will startle me. Since she will want attention. And to get said attention she will walk up quietly behind me while am at my desk, and then meow very very loudly. And will keep meowing until I either give her attention (usually roughly 5 minutes of petting before she leaves again) or I give her attention… yea she is quite persistent when she wants to her attention.
I think some of these misconceptions stem from the fact that people don't realize cats can have a wide variety of personalities and temperaments. Some cats, like my parents' cat, do like being left alone and aren't super affectionate, but these don't speak to all cats.
I love videos like this, I wish the whole world can be more educated and open minded toward cats. I’d be rich if I collected a dollar for every time someone said cats are not affectionate (especially comparing them to dogs), that they like being alone etc. My black kitty has brought more zest to my life and she is one of the most affectionate pet babies I’ve ever had. Always greets me loudly when I return home straight from the edge of the door. Jumps up for hugs and gets annoyed if I place her back down before she’s ready to let go of me. I learned this early when I went to the vet office enlightened me about the number of cats they’ve had to treat because they injured themselves from a fall. I’ve been asked even at the vet office “why a black cat?” Honestly I’m not sure, I think they’re super cute? They look like miniature pumas. I love all cats ❤️.
Most adults as well as teens in our family have a firm belief that cats are disloyal and unaffectionate to their owners 🤦🏻♀️ we have never had a pet cat for like last three generations, might be even more. I'm sure I'll be the first one in our lineage to tame a cat
You could get your cat tired by play and feeding before you leave! Or getting a friend for your feline! The play and feeding will tire and relax most cats. Then when you return just repeat the process! Or one thing I found works is laying out something you wore the day before (not washed!) In your cats favorite place! That scent will help a ton. To relax some anxiety your cat feels when you're away.
A family member had a cat that fell off of a bookcase and broke his leg. I broke my leg at the same time. I have a photo of me holding Critter, each of us showing off our casts.
I always used to free feed my cats wet food. Teaching them to tap their rice bowl to ask for food when hungry was their first trick learned. They never stressed about food again. 🍚🐈
One of my friend's cats has just learned, at two years old, to extend the claws on her front right paw, and to tap in the metal food bowl gently, when the automated feeder is empty...🤔
They definitely need company every day, and we love that, but they don’t like too much- statistics during covid has shown most are annoyed that their people are around so much as they usually consider the home more theirs!! 😄
My cats are the opposite 😏 I got both of them last summer and since then I barely leave my home. Meaning they are miffed the times I do leave home because they are so used to me always being around. Same with the cat I had before. He was always happiest when he could snuggle with me, so me being home made him happy.
The black cat myth is actually so awful. I'm still traumatized by what happened in my neighboring town. Some time around Halloween, quite a few years ago, a black cat was found hung in a tree by it's neck. I don't understand how people could be so cruel. So stupid and just sick. Ever since then I was so paranoid to let my cat (who was pure black) outside during October. I kept him inside for the whole month each year, as well as every Friday 13th day.

I've always heard it was actually GOOD luck for a black cat to cross your path! But, anyway, if I had to guess, I would say that the whole "nine lives" thing likely comes from one of the myriad folklores that have cats as part of them (there's a lot), or perhaps even more!
We found a black kitten beside the road and brought him home, Otis. He was such a good boy that after my son died by suicide for mother's day I brought home 2 more black kittens from the shelter. The are brothers Sammie and Dean Winchester. 2 years ago someone gave me another black kitten, Buffy, she is a long haired baby girl. Needless to say I would do it again. Yes I have heard where they are hard to get adopted. I love my kids.
I love black cats. I had a black polydactil female named Motor City Kitty. I also had a South American Redfoot Tortoise for over thirty five years. Her name was Studebaker. They were best buddies. They even slept together.
My cat Taz is 12 years old, he's ginger and white very very vocal, and is my absolute best mate. Sadly he has just recently been diagnosed with diabetes, hypothyroidism and heart problems (brought on by his hypothyroidism). His daily routine now, consists of having to take a raft of tablets, medicine and insulin injections. But I couldn't be without him and when his time comes it will be a very sad day.
cats can be taught cool tricks...I have 3 and each have a "special trick" I "taught" them...one kisses one hugs and one whispers...and all i did was find the thing they did the most I put a word to it and then rewarded each time they did it...now they do their tricks when asked most of the time
My furry kid has lost 3 pounds from being free fed. Before she swallowed food like an addict but after a have it available to her, she relaxes completely and she only eats when she is hungry and it’s a relief because she was too overweight.
My cat plays fetch with me sometimes. I didn’t even train him to do that lol. I just threw the toy mouse one day, and he brought it back and wanted me to throw it again. I love my baby so much ♥️ cats are awesome
Our cats Do NOT GO OUTSIDE anymore! Our adult kitty named Heidi escaped one day, a long time ago n climbed the tallest tree... my dad n another tried to find her. On the fourth day after hearing her meow “howl” I found her, while my daughter was at school. I climbed the tree n yeah it was so very VERY high, but I had NO Fear! N I got her n brought her down the tree. N since that day our 4 adult kitties have not been outside... ONLY INDOORS! We love these educational videos! Kudos, 👏 Bravo
I have 2 black cats both rescues. One came from a litter of kittens we fostered and the other we rescued from outside. We think she was dumped there , she was around 2 months when we rescued her , vet said. It was later discovered she had issues with her stomach and intestines and surgery was nessary too correct it. She had surgery and we nursed her back too health. They are both the best cats ever
I thought the black cat thing was because when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom I can't see them in the dark and I sometimes trip over them! Anyone that doesn't think cats are affectionate has never really had a cat. My cat demands my attention. If he thinks he doesn't get the affection he will get between my feet and trip me!
It was great to see that cats can have raw goat milk 🥛 without hurting their digestion. My cats always got raw goat milk, right from the bucket still warm from the goat. I'm so glad to know that I didn't hurt them!
Where I come from, Edinburgh, Scotland - we believe black cats are lucky. It's what I was taught as a child and most people I know were told the same growing up. Don't know why we started believing that but there you go!
