14 Common Kitten Mistakes You Must Avoid:
14. Allowing them to scratch or bite you:
When playing with your kitten, it’s important to establish healthy boundaries. Allowing them to scratch or bite you may seem fun, but it can teach them that biting or scratching people is acceptable and can become a real problem when they grow up. Instead of letting them scratch or bite you, offer them toys that mimic prey, such as feathers, balls, or mice. This will teach them that hands are only for gentle petting and cuddling and toys are for play.
13. Mishandling them:
Mishandling kittens includes not supporting their entire body, holding them too tight or too loose, or playing too roughly. These actions can lead to injury, behavioral issues such as fear, and long-term effects on their health and well-being. To avoid these mistakes, always support your kitten’s entire body when you pick them up, and be mindful of their body language and behavior. If your kitten seems uncomfortable or frightened, put them down gently and try again later. Remember that kittens are delicate and their bones are still developing, so it’s crucial to handle them gently.
12. Not microchipping them:
A microchip is a small device that is implanted under the skin, and contains a unique identification number that can be scanned by a vet or a shelter. Microchipping your kitten can help you reunite with them if they ever get lost. Make sure you register the microchip with your contact details, and update them if you move or change your phone number.
11. Allowing the kitten to play with dangerous objects:
Kittens are curious creatures and may try to play with objects that could harm them. Common objects to watch out for include sharp objects like knives, electrical cords, cleaning supplies, and small objects that they could swallow such as batteries or small toys. Allowing the kitten to play with these objects could result in serious injury or even death. To prevent these accidents from happening, it is important to kitten-proof your home. This involves removing any potential hazards from the areas where the kitten is allowed to play, such as the living room or bedroom. Make sure that all cords are tucked away and electrical outlets are covered, loose objects are removed, and doors to cupboards, drawers, and other storage areas are kept shut.
10. Giving them human food:
Kittens need high-quality kitten-specific food that meets their nutritional needs. Avoid giving them human food or cow’s milk, as these can cause digestive problems or allergies. In addition, some human foods can be toxic to cats, such as onion, garlic, raisins, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and avocado, to mention a few.
9. Not teaching them to tolerate body checks:
Many owners forget to teach their kittens how to tolerate being handled and examined, which can make it difficult for you and the vet to care for them in the future. For example, kittens need to learn how to tolerate being picked up, groomed, and having their ears, eyes, and other body parts checked. Remember to be gentle when training them on that. Another important step is introducing your kitten to their cat carrier, which is a critical tool for safe transportation and veterinary visits. Make the carrier a comfortable and familiar place by adding blankets and treats inside, and let them explore and play with it at their own pace. This will help them feel more comfortable and less scared when you need to take them to the vet.
8. Letting the kitten roam outside unsupervised:
The outdoors might seem fun and exciting for your kitten, but it is also very dangerous. There are many threats that can harm your kitten outside, such as cars, predators, diseases, parasites, poisons, and other animals. Your kitten might also get lost or stolen if they wander too far from home. Therefore, it is best to keep your kitten indoors. You can provide your kitten with a safe and stimulating environment inside by giving them toys, scratching posts, hiding places, and windows to look out of.
7. Ignoring litter box accidents:
While most kittens will naturally learn how to use the litter box, some may need extra help. Kittens typically learn how to use the litter box from their mother, but sometimes may need guidance. Start by providing your kitten with a clean, spacious, and accessible litter box in a quiet, private, and convenient location away from their food and water bowls. To encourage your kitten to use the litter box, place your kitten inside after they eat, drink, play, or wake up. Praise your kitten when they use it correctly, and never punish your kitten for accidents. If your kitten has trouble with litter training, consult your vet for possible medical or behavioral causes.
6. Not socializing them:
As a responsible pet owner, it’s essential to teach your kitten how to be comfortable around other people. Not socializing your kitten can lead to behavioral issues such as fear, aggression or excessive vocalization that can..
