For me, what started as a mundane video ended in grand excellence. The power & strength of the climate modeling is well demonstrated. Unknowns are usually emphasized if not controlling in so many other discussions. The false sowing of doubt by those seeking to protect their unprecedented profit and power, the robustness of the science-based climate predictions, & our agency to do something is crystal clear in this interview. Glad I kept watching!

god, this was amazing. I cant overstate how much of an inspiration gavin serves for me as an aspiring climate scientist, and I need to mention how great of an interviewer you are. it'd be hard to count how many times you asked a question that piqued my interest, either because it was something I didn't know myself or was deeply interested in knowing Gavin's thoughts on the matter. the ending segment on astrobiology and exoplanets is something I view as a light at the end of the tunnel. for lack of better words, assuming we do get our ducks in a row and effectively deal with climate change, the study of exoplanets, other atmospheres, tech/bio signatures, etc. will be the future of climate science and that excites me to no end.

I’m more worried about the Goldilocks zone that humanity finds itself existing on in the continents. As the climate warms, the Goldilocks zone shrinks. This will push humans into areas that are non-ideal for modern civilization. Paired with global population growth and the increasing competition for home ownership, I foresee a future where home ownership belongs to the privileged few & the vast majority are debt trapped to land lords or surviving the land.

There's no denying climate change, the earth has experienced this from its beginning and will go on experiencing climate change long after humans have disappeared. The reasons for this are mainly due to the large ball of mainly hydrogen gas 93 million miles away and the earth's orbit around it. There is no data to support a 'climate emergency'.

47:28 this is clearly way beyond his specialty this whole segment. He is not a social scientist. The problem under discussion is not a battle of values, like he characterised it, but a battle against the control of values. The solution is developing thinking power to where values are difficult to control.

gavin nails the reasoning as to why climate science seems uniquely polarizing in terms of public interpretation and scientific consensus. people's lives are directly affected by climate change, thus, resulting in some holding more extreme, contrarian views because their lives are going to impacted, one way or another. the existence of black holes, for all intents and purposes, is not very contentious because the average person simply has no frame of reference and no point of relation. covid is a great analogy and another example of why climate science is not unique in terms of the disconnect. people ran towards outright denial in order to avoid the reality that their life would be affected, largely negatively, and things would need to change; rather than deal with this reality, they chose to reject the existence of the pandemic entirely

There some important realities re the net zero drive. E.g. the UK does not use much coal now which is presented as a victory. However the UK has achieved this through offshoring much heavy industry to other countries that do burn coal, so the global net benefit is not reduced significantly.

Seeing his physics and models, the fact Germany never beat the USA to the atomic bomb in ww2 is delineated to people at the top making the correct decisions on how to work on this problem. The fact Germany was working on an offshoot of atomic power by studying it's nature of radioactivity and stability of elements instead of using Enrico Fermi to make plutonium instead of beating our heads against how to make more information available on how to create enough material available, like from the very top like Pzillard going to Einstein to tell him of the threat posed by Germany being ahead in physics which scared the heck out of our top thinkers. Had Germany made it a national priority like we did with the Manhatten project then atomic weapons would have been falling all over England. In fact they had the perfect delivery system with V2 rocket, which instead of using all these scientists in the V2 program instead of in Germany all these disparate units instead of making things like the 163 Komet instead focusing on making the ultimate weapon a nuclear weapon. This is the failure at the top to direct forces and talent into a proper direction. I believe they did have enough talent if properly directed towards the weapon. Fortunately the leadership did not understand millions of electron volts per reaction to a few 10's of volts with chemical elements.

Look the experts said global warming caused rivers in Europe to dry up. The experts said look there’s writing on rocks that are super old. Why didn’t the experts ponder what pollution people emitted centuries ago to cause the rivers to dry up way back when? What pollution caused global warming to let them write on rocks centuries ago that’s now seen in the drought? Also global warming advocates rarely mention the River Thames freezing and the mini ice age Europe had. Like I’ve not seen a climate model that explains that and the warming today

This is why no one trusts science experts, and its relevent to the inability of experts to communicate ideas in a way that isnt obfuscated or easily conflated, or left as a point of contention, that we have no recourse to understanding. At the 40 minute mark, you ask the question about public understanding by questionaire relating to climate and what scientists know or comprehend. Gavin correctly extrapolates this question, as not being specific to climate, in juxtaposition to your opinion its not, and he puushes back of you saying its not in other fields of science, he states, "its not a situation unique to climate science, it happens whenever science comes up with stuff that is inconvenient to various things that people care about. Evolution is another one, where public opinion is extremely divergent to (the) scientific opinion. Covid showed, i think quite how powerful, motivated reasoning is, when it comes to interpreting scientific information, not withstanding, at the begining of covid there was a lot of uncertainty, but there were a lot of people who were very certain about a lot of things that were very wrong..." To which you noise an agreement. What...? Who were these people that were wrong, what was it that they were wrong about...? We have no idea, in an already convulted mess made by big pharma, science man himself Dr. Fauci and variois institutions and states giving information we now know to be invalid and deathy to the public. Young healthy adults have died, because they followed the scientific advice, but of course we should follow them about climate...? This just leads to annoyance, confusion and why experts get ignored, they stray into areas and make generralisations they dont like the public making, but do themselves...and we are still clueless as to what he is actually giving context to.. Im sure Gavin isnt talking about the origins of the disease, or the need for vaccinating the young (anyone under 50, in goodhealth) but we wouldnt know, he doesnt mention the juxtaposition of lies and cover ups and mistakes around covid, we now know happened from data taken, because we have the emails and testimony, censored reports from big pharma etc. We do know that experts with divergent opinions were hounded out of jobs, or besmirched, servicemen fired, nurses, doctors, and scientific experts like Jay battacharya at stanford. At one point, it was deemed racist to call the disease the chinese flu, and who is it that uses such epothets against people when they want to shut conversations down..? Please, please, please do better at communicating points of specificity, not generality, i can get that at the pub, you are supposed to be communicators of reality, not haphazard, easily obscure opinion. Regards. how is this the values of science, upheld by scientists..?

As parts of the world become uninhabitable due to these changes there will be an even greater influx of refugees around the world which will cause more issues with culture clash, food shortages, and inflation. Our sun has been relatively stable for all of human recorded history. We have to use fossil fuels because the powers that be have spent nearly a century killing off alternative fuel sources. Weather forecasting and climate modeling are apples and oranges. If you bothered to actually listen to this podcast instead of trolling and learning about them you would know why forecasting detailed local weather beyond a week is almost impossible and why the global climate models have been able to predict the global climate behavior very accurately.
