I work at a Chrysler dealership and just last week the shop foreman comes over to me and asks "Do you have an 11 mm allen socket?, I am doing a brake job and a Grand Cherokee and I dont have a socket to fit it!" This Video made my day! Every thing Eric O said is just what I say daily! I've been doing this for 32 years and brother I quit every day! Truest statement "We dont like surprises" Still chuckling at that one!

Thank you! First, I did not have an 11mm hex either. Your video saved me a huge amount of time and money. It seems the "anti rattle" clip actually affects brake operation. I completed a pad and rotor change easily enough but FAILED to note the installation position of the aforementioned clips. Following my incorrect clip installation, I experienced terrible pedal fade. I thought I had damaged a caliper or something. I then watched your video and noted the clip position . I then repositioned my clip correctly AND magically, the brakes then functioned normally. PS I enjoyed the banter!

Today I was in a set of circumstances which really made me appreciate the way Mr. O. does things. I got a flat, but had taken out my tools out for a project. The wheel rusted to the rotor, and wouldn’t come off. Luckily I found a old brick to use as a hammer. This is why grinding off the rust is so important.

I had the same issue doing my 92 year old grandfather's Ford Escape's brakes in the middle of the night. I ended up using the Chuck side of a hole saw.

I ended up welding a bolt into a cheap socket on the one I did. If you're a cheapskate like me it beats buying one and fumbling with the double nuts flopping around. You can also run a nut down and tack it to the bolt head for a longer wrench. If the flats don't meet you can put a washer in between, tack it and trim the washer on the grinder. I've probably got a dozen or so made like this and they work great. Last tip is if you round the top edges of the bolt head off a little it will make it work like the ball end sockets to help in tight spaces.

Excellent idea!! If I didn't have a 7/16 I would've machined down the tip of a 12mm. Your idea makes me think of how many times I've used a 9/16" wrench/socket on a 14mm bolt or 3/4" on a 17mm bolt....or, like Eric has said - use a metric Crescent wrench...

I bought a 13pc set of sunex 3/8 drive one piece hex bits long ago. They have both metric and standard in one set + a nice case. They run from 4mm to 1/2. The set includes a 7/16 which is usually close enough to a 11mm. I use those 1/2 drive harbor freight one piece hex bits for larger sizes.

I went through the exact same thing on one of those. Customer dropped car off with a power stop brake kit. I pulled wheels and spent next hour cussing at 2 different metric allen socket sets. Called customer and low and behold they had done brakes 2 years prior and also have another jeep with same size. They used a 7/16 that was shaved down s bit.

@7:14 those rubbers have to come out, and you need to clean underneath them. Those are German ATE brakes (thanks to Daimler), and they even make a special tool for that (looks like a bottle brush Flex-Hone 22mm front 18mm for the rear) to clean out or hone the holes where those rubbers sit in. It corrodes and puts pressure on the rubber that makes your slide pins stick. Common sense to use silicone based oil or grease for the rubber.

7/16 will fit 11mm, 5/16 will double as a 8mm, 3/4 is only .002 away from 19mm. 5/32 works for 4mm. I've used that knowledge often in factory maintenance.

Tony Whitaker ... Absolutely correct. A 14mm wrench or socket is actually better on 9/16" hex head bolts or nuts due to being very slightly tighter in fitment.

Conversely, a ½" wrench or socket fits tighter on a 13mm hex. The catch is that 13mm hex bolts or nuts are very rare.

That is like the L83/L86 bank 1 cylinder heads. One bolt is a shorter allen headed and it is a 13mm, and of course not many sets have that size. But Husky did and also has the 11mm!

Down it panama city after the hurricane, they had trees piled 3 stories tall by 100 yds wide by 300 yds long in four locations! They were shredding from oct '18 to the last time I was there 4/19.

My son had the same issue with his 2015 Dodge Durango. We went all over town looking for and 11mm allen. Finally found a MAC tool man who would meet us at his home gate and sell us the socket. Not made by MAC mind you but made in China but priced like a MAC

Eleven mill allen's are a bit of an oddity, but yes, every now and then some engineer will specify their use and getting the appropriate wrench can be a bit of a trial. Recently a friend of mine thought it would be a good idea to buy an old BSA Gold Star 500 motorcycle. He was doing a bit of work on it and there was a fair amount of cussing going on when he found that his tools, either imperial or metric, simply did not fit properly. I watched quietly for a few minutes and then asked the question, "Have you ever heard of British Standard Whitworth?" He gave me a look like I was from the dark side of the moon and I then went on to explain about how England, being an island and all, had developed their very own standard for thread pitches and bolt heads. He called a couple of local tool emporiums only to be told he would have to go to the dreaded Snap On dealer. He called them and they named prices that gave him heart palpitations. I just smiled as his frustration grew. He told me I was a smug SOB who seemed to be enjoying his plight and I admitted it. Then I told him, "I'm going home now. I might have to dig out an old tool box that I seldom use these days. It's the tool box that I used to use when I rode Nortons." He called me about an hour later and asked if he could borrow my "Norton tools". Moral of the story is never ever get rid of old tools. Never can tell when they might come in handy. I'm just waiting now until he loses a bolt. You see, this smug SOB also happens to have another old tool box filled with spare nuts and bolts along with a tap and die set from when I rode Nortons.................

If you ever get stuck for an 11mm Allen, a good tip is alot of medium size chisels and centre punches have an 11mm hex handle. You can cut them down and use in a Socket.

Still enjoy doing brake jobs, gravy mist if the time. Loved your comment about appointment to check air pressure in tires and show up expecting a rebuild. That was my BIGGEST gripe when I had my business. I worked by appointment only because it was a dude business so I had to schedule my client vehicle drop offs very precisely and it never failed, people would call to get a quote and schedule a fairly easy or quick job so I’d schedule the next job right on top of it. Then the client would show up and gave either a much more time consuming job they wanted done or a list of things in addition to the one they called about. “Oh, while you have it on the lift can you do X, Y and Z”? In-freakin’-believable.

You took me back to the '70s, had an OSSA 250cc Stiletto motorcycle it had a couple of 11mm bolts hat held the engine in the frame, NEVER have used the 11mm sockets I bought for that bike since then!

Too late...I already got hung up on one of these. Went to the HF and picked up a set...it didn't have an 11mm either. Had to get the Amazon to the rescule. Not to be burned again, I now have every hex socket with no skips.

Eric, your videos are always a ppleasure to watch. With all the problems in the world, I like being able to watch one of your videos where you always have a positive attitude. I’ve ran in to people in shops that have really tried my patients at times. I wish all shops were ran like yours. I’m sure you run in to your share of difficult people, but you do a wonderful job keeping a positive attitude. Your not cursing while making a video is something I really appreciate. I’ve watched other content providers that don’t care. Watching auto shows on TV, like Fantom Works, they beep out so much it sounds like morse code. Annoys me that even though they know they are shooting a TV show that will be seen by young kids, they still can’t control their mouths. Keep up the good work.

I used the double nut Allen key replacement for a 17 mm motorcycle fork cap about a year ago. Worked great. Edit: because why not use a 17mm Allen, thanks Yamaha🙄.....

Hello eric, make them reschedule. My wife is a health care provider and she only addresses what they came in for and then reschedules them for another visit. That way you can stay on schedule. This is the same in all service businesses. I feel for you. Good luck!!

I think Napa ought to have SMA stickers and such for sale at the counter. Good or bad publicity is publicity. Maybe ask them about licencing an SMA/NAPA sticker promo. Would definitely buy a sticker locally for my tool box. Probably sit and talk at the counter about SMA for an extra two minutes as well. Thanks for the 11mm tip.

Brake jobs do get monotonous for sure, but unfortunately brakes and ball joints are necessary to keep the lights on and water running. I enjoy powertrain work and really tough diag stuff but it can tie up bays and many consecutive days, plus the vehicle could end up in the parking lot for who knows how long before the customer comes to pay the bill.

Brake jobs sure are EASY in Avoca !!!!! Never a rusted bolt head that rounds off, never a bad boot on the caliper cup, or a dry rotted brake hose, and of course, NO broken bleeders !!!!!! Florida brake jobs are a royal PITA !!! When you going to get a tough job, like I have every day ........ no ice cream or New York cheese cake here, Eric !!!!! N Y rust belt my azz !!!!!

if you look at most recycled asphalt .. the same stuff they remove is mixed with hot tar and sent back to be laid down. they don't sift out the dust.. they don't sift out the tiny particles.. it all comes back.. the issue is crushed aggregate roller compacted supports the weight of traffic on it.. the tar only keeps it in place and waterproofs it to stop it from washing out. the recycled asphalt with its dust to usually 3/8 cannot be compacted as the particle size is too small.. only the tar holds it in place. the amount of tar used heats up and expands in the sun.. contracts in the cold.. causing cracks.. water gets under the cracks to the bottom of the layer.. cars and trucks moving along work the water under the cracks like taking your tooth brush handle to the tooth paste tube.. pushes the water along till it reaches something solid.. then it pops the asphalt up.. creating a pot hole. using crushed rock over 3/4" is the longest lasting roads.. roads could be paved and last 70 years.. now with recycled asphalts.. very little or no new materials are needed. only a few thousand gallons of tar.. and it has to be repaved again in 8 to 12 years if not sooner. just thought you should know.. if you looked at the price of the recycled asphalt.. they charge a lot for it.. almost as much as proper virgin crushed rock asphalt. its great.. bring in the old.. mix some tar.. heat it up and send it back out..

I have a gearwrench metric hex set that came with 11mm. Never had a need for it yet. I figured out the bolt & double nut trick doing a power steering box on a International 7400, forgot the size but it was huge

Live in Phoenix AZ, there is a very big N.A.P.A here that is staffed by the slowest uninterested people ever. We call it take a napa. Don't have a 11mm either, but I have a pile of unused 9 mm he wrenches.

We use Blue Locktite on those Caliper Bolts. It doesn't hurt.

Some FCA cars you need a 10, 11 and 12 to remove the drain plugs, mostly on fiats but allen keys here in europe are pretty normal and almost every it comes with n11, but most os them dont come with 12(i have a lot of allen key sets and had to buy n12 separate)

Heads up if you ever get into the chevy 14 and up lt1 engines to remove the left cylinder head one bolt is a 13mm hex... its like they teamed up with the tool companies and be like we will make it this size so you can sell another tool.

Same thing with fiat H11 i had to learn the hard way but snap on was coming in a fee hours so waited for them.

THANK GOD, someone else complained about that hex head size on the caliper bolt, and those darn clips. Hate those things, they never stay one after you take them off, its like balancing it, and just when you think its good, you go to put the wheel on and it springs off.
