14LB vs 16LB! I'm testing these two weights heads up with SPECTO running to see if there's a noticeable difference with how much it hooks and how hard it hits. I have 2 Radical ZigZags drilled I-dentical so let's get on with the show!

With the help of SPECTO data, it'll help tell the story about reaction shape, overall hook and continuation through the pins. Here are the SPECTO data points used and definition of each term:
Launch Speed - Speed measured off the hand.
Entry Speed - Speed measured at the pins. (What you'd see on your home center MPH screens)
Rev Rate - Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)
Launch Angle - The angle the ball traveled the first 10 feet.
Break Point Position - Board at which the ball was at its outermost position.
Total Hook - Total number of boards the ball crosses on the way to the pins.
Hook Power - Number of boards the ball hooked based on the True Breakpoint.
Entry Angle - The angle of the ball between 51 and 55 feet.
Impact Angle - The angle of the ball between 57 and 59.5 feet.
Pin Deck Exit - Ball position at the end of the pin deck.

I was talking with a pro shop operator who went to 14lbs after a wrist injury, and he noticed that he was standing 5 to 10 boards left of everyone from the start. Once his wrist healed up, he went straight back to 15lbs and was able to stay right longer during those tournaments. He's sticking with 15lbs. So I can understand the slightly heavier equipment being better for that instance. As for me, getting back into bowling after a few years off, I was barely getting a 15lb ball down the lane. My speed was so slow that I needed some change. So after talking with a few pro shop guys, I ended up dropping down to 14lbs, which has bumped my speed back up, and it also gave me a slightly higher rev rate from the get go. I'm far more consistent with 14lbs as well. I'm not saying I'm good, just slight more consistent lol. My arms and shoulders don't get nearly as sore either. Maybe this information can help someone else who might be in a similar situation. Thanks for the explanations as always Nick. :)

Changed to a 14# after a long layoff from the sport. Previously threw 16#. When I throw it in the pocket, those 14 lbs hit like a ton of bricks.

As it should. From a physix standpoint, 14 carries better than 15 or 16. The problem, as noted in the vid, is swing path and control at the bottom. We have a tendency to muscle the swing with the lighter balls. The only true test would be the "Throwbot" which would be immune to swing and release variations.

The thing I notice is 14# have higher RG values. So they are a touch cleaner than their 15# counterparts. Angular velocity is mv^2/r and kinetic energy transfer is 1/2mv^2 so less mass (in both cases) tend to correlate to faster velocity (swing and ball speed) since we are squaring the velocity a 1mph difference would result in more joules and more energy (this dimishes because of newton's 3rd law for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction 30#+ of pins reacting to the force of a 14/15/16# ball). For me (i am a big guy 6'5 270+) 14# is less wear and tear on my body (also in my mid 40s). I can keep my feet slower and still have enough leverage (with the length of the lever/fulcrum aka arm and shoulder) to generate about 16 to 17mph on the monitor. With a no thumb style (similar to Tom Daugherty) i need that extra ball speed or everything hooks. Also when I bowl in a tournament setting and in my 40s have to loft it. 14# is much much easier on my body to do that (I just stand up more at the line). Also if I am not mistaken didn't Wes Malott, Tom Daugherty, Tom Smallwood and a few others go to 14# last season (I know Bill O'Neil tried but is back at 15)

I threw 14lb when I started bowling in my early 20’s, and still do today. I’ve always had much better control with the lighter balls. I would always try to muscle 15’s and 16’s too much trying to get my speed right. Even after 20+ years and now at 44yo I can still chuck a 14lber at 18-20mph and 350rpm.

I swear by the 14lb. Not a Spring chicken anymore and threw my first 300 ever with a 14 pounder! I'm a fan. By my eye the 14 has way more revs. Good stuff BrunsNick!

Back in November, I dropped a pound on my spare ball (15 to 14) while keeping my primary balls at 15. Last year, up until the switch, my ten pin conversion rate was a horrible 42.6%. Since the switch, I’ve brought that up to 61.6%. I have a lot more control over where the ball is going now. Even when I miss, the misses are a lot closer. Hitting my spot a lot more consistently.

I drilled a 14lb Raw hybrid just to try it out. Similar to you, been throwing 15lb for 20 years after throwing 16lb in high school. I notice a slight increase in rev rate and speed at 14lb but my accuracy decreases from muscling it. So now I only use it as a practice ball when working on timing and form. No sense beating up my arsenal for that.

Really appreciate these videos Nick! I used to throw 14 and moved up to 15 a couple of years or so ago. However, I've been worried about needing to drop back down to 14 due to a weaker wrist. I get shots once or twice a year in my wrist(Carpal tunnel + almost 50 sucks) and have been struggling keeping my wrist from breaking and coming over the top of the ball let alone being able to stay under. It looks like dropping to 14 is going to be my best option in the long run without having to worry about losing ball reaction/capabilities.

Been throwing 14s for a few months now to maximize rev rate and its been great. The carry has been fantastic and my strikes sound great. I only use 15 on long oil patterns to keep my speed slower. There are occasionally speed fluctuations when I don't pay attention to my mechanics, but ball deflection is not a problem at all for me. If you are a low Rev player, switching to a lighter ball will lead to more ball deflection. In this video, Nick even has deflection with the 16 on quite a few shots because of his low rev rates, so of course it will be more pronounced using a 14. A.J. Johnson uses 14s on tour because of the revs as well. It all comes down to the person behind the ball.

I switched down from 16 lbs to 15 lbs a little more than a year ago after a rotator cuff injury finally healed up. Mostly to try and lower the chances of re-injury but I do notice a touch more revs and the weight difference in a 4 ball bag at the end of the night 😂

The biggest difference was noticeable when you did not get the ball out to 5. When the breakpoint was closer to 10; the 14 had quite a bit more deflection. The 16 deflected as well but nearly as much as the 14. The 14 needs that little bit steeper angle to get through the pins. EX: Where the 16 could leave a solid 9; the 14 would split the 8-9. Another difference is if you used a smoother transition ball as opposed to a ball more responsive to friction like that Zig Zag. The quicker response balls like the Zig Zag, Trouble Maker Pearl and others like them I would think would make the 14 look better whereas I would think a smoother ball like a Raw Hammer Black, GB2 Solid would not have quite the entry angle needed to make the 14 hit more similarly to the 16. I could be wrong but that is what I would expect.

Would you do a review with 13lb bowling balls? Is there more hitting power with lighter balls because of higher speeds? I understand the core will be a modified core. Thus, does carry suffer? Thanks.

I'm team 15/16. It always felt like I needed to be perfect with a 14. Then the extra speed or revs leads to more nasty splits. At least for me. I had several punch through the face and get 4 or 5

To throw a 16lb I would need a caddie to lift it from the return rack for me and place it on the ground so I could take a run at it to get it rolling. 🤣🤣 My 14lb'ers are about all I can handle, and they work pretty well.

Great video explaining this, i have been throwing nothing but 14ib equipment for the past 3 years maybe, i’ve had 15ib and i still have 1 16ib and for me 14ib just feels the most consistent even tho I’m quite a big guy, 15 and 16 i just feel like i have problems throwing my shoulder forward sometimes and I don’t need that inconsistency on top of my other inconsistency’s🤣🤣🤣🤣 tho i will ask 1 question, would the change in the weight help if you throw at heavy pins? My center i usually bowl at as the heaviest pins they can put out under USBC standards and that’s just something that’s been on my mind as of late if 16ib would make a difference.
@brunsnick

Not sure where they would find the heaviest pins, as most all production pins will be 3lb 6oz. The heaviest allowed is 3lb 10oz.

I play 16lb over the oil patterns, NOT through. I can barely keep a 16 on the lanes. So I would chuck a 14 way to far. I neutered my swing to keep the ball down, sounds weird but is true. Actually wish I could go up in weight. Sincerely Mike B. B. From Philly, P.A. U.S.A.
