The 14” MacBook Pro is an incredible device, but I’m reminded of how the MacBook Air is still an incredible machine as well, especially considering how it’s thinner, lighter, fan-less, and cheaper. You get a lot of value for your $1000.

This also shows how good the air is. Due to apple silicon, MacBook line went from (Bad, Average, Good) to (Good, Great, Mind-blowing). For the first time in a long while it seems like the entire MacBook lineup justify their cost.

I appreciate your honest and detailed videos. It really seems like you get what you pay for with these macs. The only question is how much power does one really need. I can get a lot done with my m1 macbook air already, but the new pros are tempting. Or wait for new mac mini pro and keep the air as the portable ultrabook?

I got my first computer on 3 January 1982, I had ordered it as soon as it was announced in 1981; a Model B BBC microcomputer made by Acorn Computers; it had 1 Mb of RAM. Skip forward several decades of ever advancing technology and in January 2009 I bought a 24” iMac; it had 2 Gb of DDR2 SDRAM. But WOW, now aged 91, I never thought I would live to see the mainframe power of my day condensed by Apple into laptop devices: the 13” MacBook Air, 14” MacBook Pro, and the mighty MacBook Max. Your infectious enthusiasm combined with crystal clarity has made them come alive.

Me too. A Radio Shack TRS80 4K green screen with cassette tape storage in 1978 (HDD’s came out later), then an Apple IIe in 1983… If I’d matched the cost of all the computers I’ve bought through the years with an equal $$ amount of APPL stock, I’d have many thousands of shares. Oh well…

Wow, this machine! I was expecting so much from the new MBP 14" and it seems to holp up to my expectations. I thought I wouldn't like the notch, but I'm actually kinda digging it. I am also so excited for the screen. I saw the new MBP in store and it was one hell of a difference to my MBA early 2015. I hope I'll get my hands on one of the new machines in the future, because they are fire! Love your reviews, nice work!

Don't worry about the notch, I have one and you can download TopNotch that blanks out the top part of the display so it is all-black with the menu bar overlaid on it. Even better I like that on these new models you can have the setting to have the menu bar permanently displayed even in full screen mode, which feels like a smart use of space compared to being black like a thick bezel until I hover my mouse over it.

The notch makes a lot of sense for a laptop actually.. I prefer to have very slim bezels with a notch than thick bezels

The fact I used to be convinced in selling my 16 inch Intel MBP for a MBA should be convincing enough that the 14 inch should also be a sufficient replacement. But man oh man do I love these tests anyway lol.

It’s worth it, just depends on if you can make worth of it. If you’re using it for light tasks perhaps not. But if you’re more a power user or will use it a lot for media and entertainment, it probably is because of the performance difference and how good the screen is in comparison.

Really nice comparison. I think for editors the main difference that actually matters is the playback performance. If both have the same playback then the macbook air is a good choice, considering the price. I mean double the money for just a couple of little thins, i think is not worth it. Saludos desde Chile!!

Not sure if this was mentioned but a good thing to mention is that the Macbook Air only has 8GB of Ram. Which shows how good the M1 chip really is. Im sure a lot of the rendering was heavily bottlenecked by the 8gb of ram. But I get its supposed to be about base models.

The new design and better specs makes the new one very tempting, but I question if it’s overkill for photo editing? Maybe I would be better off with the MacBook Air. I will be using an external monitor about half the time.

I think you sold me on the 14” at 8:20 when you said if I upgrade the Air to match the RAM and HD the 14” is really worth it then. The 14” makes so much sense. If I took the 13” MBP the 14” is even more of a of a deal. And that battery conservation, I don’t know what voodoo computer magic that apple does. Ok I’m pulling the trigger on the 14”!!! @@Londonbridge978 It depends,... I upgraded from the M1 Air to the M1 14 Pro because of the larger 120 Hz promotion display, M1 Pro speed upgrade, and the connectivity ports. You also get 512GB SSD and 16 GB of memory. If you do heavy coding and/or heavy video/photo editing, I recommend the Mac 14 Pro M1. If not, you will save about $1000 with the MBAir. It is still the best mac for most users.

This is totally amazing comparison between M1 Air and M1 Pro 14 inch. I have MacBook Air late 2015 for my video editing until now. Saving up for my first MacBook. Until watching your video I was sure I wanted the Air gold, as I love the design. But the camera difference at 4:50 makes me think the Pro is the way to. I work as a psychologist online, and really want my patient to be able to see a clear image of me. The difference suprised me. Maybe wait for the Air M2

Wow, I was surprised that there wasn't much difference in time between the two exporting that first video. The new MBP really shines when handling ProRes tho! Took 1/4 of the time the MBA took.

I'd be grasping at straws to find a reason why it is worth the money for 98% of users. Instead consider the M1 w/ 16GB ram, which is extremely good value and future proof.

I love they’ve finally expanded the port selections. It makes a difference. While the air looks better, the pro is more practical. Yay.

Thank you for making such an in-depth comparison! I was surprised by how great the Air performed for its price point. I would've thought that the Air was a big improvement over the previous Air, but after seeing your benchmarks and investigating further to compare them to mine, I was surprised to find that just the Air is a massive upgrade in almost every way over the 2018 15" Macbook Pro I'm writing this comment on!

I was always curious how many more tracks this new one could run in logic. I recommended to my friend who is a musician to buy an M1 air in March. I don’t regret that decision based on the small number of extra tracks a thousand dollars buys you.

I just realized that the extra chunkiness of the new MBP design, is effectively leaving the slim niche all to the MBA. I would expect the next MBA Design to be “blocky” yet ultra thin with probably the 8 core version of the M1Pro. This “fixes” the issue Apple has been having with the MBP being so thin that it was hard to see the real benefit of an MBA.
