In this video we spend time out in the field and in the cab of a 470 hp Case IH 470 Rowtrac Steiger Tractor running a Yetter 3541 Rotary Hoe.
We will look at why this implement is needed to save a struggling corn crop in the video.

Rotary hoes have been around forever. I used mine for weed control, you hit the corn right as it emerges, and, get rid of any small weeds, then i used to do one cultivation when the corn was about 6 inches or so high. It helps to minimize the use of herbicides.

Very true. The rotary hoe goes back to horse drawn days. They used to be a great weed control option for sure.

@@bigtractorpower I had a John Deere, about twelve feet, and,it looked much like the one in the video. I have seen the type that are pull type instead of three point hitch mounted. Now the thing about hoes is, you have to go as fast as you can, the faster the better, i wonder how a team of horses could have done that? I ran mine on my John Deere 2440, which i think was about 60hsp.

Back in the '60''s we had a six row John Deere 3-point hitch we pulled with a JD 435. Little tractor had plenty of power but running down the road to the next field the front tires (wide front end) would alternate touching down -- other tire was 6" off the road. You steered it with the rear brakes!

The fact remains, if the farmer has the available finances it does not matter what machinery he or she chooses to use. It's their farm, their money, their choice. I would rather have 100 too much that 10 too little. It makes more sense to purchase one machine to do it all over three or four to do only one or two jobs.

what if the sun is going into it's 400yr cycle and farming weather continues to worsen? many farmers know about the cycles, but none of us were alive the last time the sun did what it's doing now. thank you for sharing and taking the time to show ways it's being handled. 2nd question, would fall plowing, then good spring tillage have prevented this? many are installing irrigation in N.W. PA
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
Crusting of the field after rain is a common problem. This type of implement goes back to horse drawn days. Hopefully a farm only faces this problem every once in a while. The strip Till accomplishes good tillage only where the seed needs to be leaving the rest of the field unrolled and holding soil in place. Traditional plowing and spring tillage would make the crusting worse after a heavy rain.

@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
The spiked wheels are spaced at 7 inches all the what across. They just skim the surface breaking the soil and tearing out shallow rooted weeds. The corn is planted an inch and a half deep and the wheels are no where near that deep.

@dwightl5863
@dwightl5863 5 лет назад
My understanding, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, the rotary hoe is set not to go very deep into the ground and also going fast keeps it from going very deep as well. The corn is rooted deeper in the ground so it doesn't get dug up. The weeds, on the other hand, are rooted very shallow at this early stage and get uprooted very easily.

It works well to rework the soil and to leave the plants intact.

@@gasher1990 I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Tillage burns off organic matter because it exposes the bacteria that brake organic matter down and use it (burn it) as food. It is technical overpowered with those giants. But: As far as they are targetting less soil compaction, I think it is ok to use them. Even if they may burn less fuel with other tractors, if these are allready on the farm, it is better to use them than put another tractor on the farm, so the big ones getting their hours on this way to get them replaced faster in time than other way round. Plus this machine is very high, which menas you have a very good overview and it has a small turning radius too.

How does this not disturb the corn 🌽 yet it kills some weeds?
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
The wheels just skim the surface of the soil. Weeds are shallow rooted. The corn is planted 1.5 inches deep so the wheels do not reach that deep to tear the seedings up.

I don't see how it can uproot small weeds but not the corn at those kinds of speeds. Seems like he's throwing a bunch of trash on top of the small corn seedlings, no??

Lol, its just a tad bit big, we use a 6r for ours on our cotton fields. Ours is different though, its spaced every 38" for the cotton, instead of right next to each other on this one.

Cotton equipment is neat to see. Much wider rows for sure.

bigtractorpower It sure looks that way! Breaks up the crust very nicely and in a hurry! Interesting seeing all the different equipment used at different parts of USA and Canada!

I noticed that the case tractor has a lower rpm at 14mph than did the John Deere. That to me would probably mean a longer life time

That's different from us. Freakin' odd when you can do it via GPS. (also awesome) Getting ours done on easter, 6 row and non-GPS, sorries. =p

GPS is nice. I just drove a GPS tractor for the first time this week. It took some getting used to. It’s hard to not want to steer and trust the computer. I like 6 row. I grew up watching an IH 685 and 6 row AC planter.

how does it pull weeds out but not corn ?
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
The corn is planted 2 inches deep. The weeds are just in the surface. The wheels flip the weeds with ease but the corn is rooted deep enough. It to be impacted.

I'm not sure that "cold" rain would have much of a different effect than "warm"
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
Well what I was trying to express the temp dropped into the 30s and 40s and it was a steady cold drizzle that left a bunch of water. The action of the Yetter helps warm the soil back up. Yes you could have heavy warm rain from a thunderstorm and crust the field.

Looks like with that many blades they would damage as many plants as they save.

No damage to the plants. It’s just skimming the the surface.

That's a good-looking tractor and I like the whole outfit but the muffler on that thing is huge looks like it down the left side there be a big blind spot so you wouldn't be able to see
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
The muffler is almost invisible inside the cab. In this video m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ORWUTUOgqMc.html I do a ride along in a 470 cab to show the view.

Thank you for yet another quality video! 👌 I do like you showing the viewer how the implement conditions the soil and it does not harm the young corn plant. God's blessings to you and yours on this Easter holiday celebration.
