Almost joined the Navy or Air Force in the hopes of getting stationed in Japan. But I never did enlist but I'm here living in Japan now and married! Always have the "want to join" the Navy in the back of my head though :p
THANK YOU FOR THIS PUBLIC SERVICE. This presentation is so perfectly on target. I was assigned to USS Midway (the first Yokosuka-homeported carrier) from 1977-1980, and came back to the ship as a contractor 1983-1985. Your presentation was the very best. It was so sad to see all my workmates who never ventured out further than the Honch. I was there with my wife. Both of us were US Navy on our first Japan tour. We both took Japanese classes, especially my wife. I was mostly at sea. We lived in Navy housing the first tour, "on the economy" the second tour. Some travel recommendations: Number one - Visit Kyoto-Nara in autumn. Look it up. Number two - MWR organizes Mt. Fuji climbs. It's like Mecca for Shinto. Old ladies do it. You can too. So rewarding to be there at dawn. Number 3 - Ueno Zoo in springtime for the cherry blossom festival. Tremendous cultural experience to understand what is going on there. Pro Tip - We had a mini-van both tours, after my wife learned enough Nihongo to be truly effective. Explain the Min-shu-ku network. (Bed and Breakfast, but only if you speak a little and understand the bath culture.). Thank you for so many memories. We still miss Japan.
Great video, I'm currently stationed on the USS Blue Ridge and this is very helpful, it's just kinda hard to meet and socialize with japanese locals without knowing japanese so thanks for the advice
Very good video. I was stationed on USS Midway (homeport in CFA Yokosuka) back in the mid 80's. You are EXTREMELY right about using the MWR for tours and events. I enjoyed it, and miss it as well. "He who goes to Japan and does not climb Mount Fuji is a fool! He who climbs Mount Fuji more than once it an even greater fool!"
Nice Channel man. I was a Navy Seabee so I didn’t get to enjoy most of the great destinations but love hearing about the good times and places. Keep up the good work
Great advice I loved it when I was stationed there I loved the people and the history One thing that I think is the most important is too not get into trouble while in Japan and especially stay away from drugs The Japanese take this very seriously and you will do time in prison and it is not like America I saw a fellow marine who was arrested for possession of Marijuana and he got 5 years in prison Get out and explore one of the most unique and exciting countries in the world 🌎
My dream is to be in japan for 4 years too. I just wish I was 18 already so I can go. 😔. I dont want to an American high school next year. Well at least I'll learn how to learn japanese in my American high school next year so I dont get confused in japan. 😁
Love this! It's funny how these were the same rules we had when I studied in Japan for one semester many moons ago. Except for MWR activities? What's that? ***Don't ve too many chu hi's 😋🤣😁
When you were off base did you run into a lot of civilian foreigners and socialize with them, or did the military mostly stick together/have their own clubs/bars?
Lived in Yoko 3 years. Also they told me "there's 2 kinds of people stationed in Japan; those that explored it (loved it) and those that didn't (hated it). Chu-Hi advice; also accurate! PS: we loved it. :)
I hear ya. Was there for 3 years 91 to 94 and I loved getting out and around. But several others would just stay in their barracks and play their video games on their off days.
Traveling with Jose You are spot on buddy! Great video, I grew up there and lived there half my life so many memories! I appreciate people like you showing respect to our Japanese culture and showing Japanese not all foreign people are disrespectful
If I had to choose I would pick MA. I had close friends that were QM's and they had crazy hours and always had pressure since they work closely with officers.
@@ntech1507 I never saw it happen. Unless you can directly speak to the person(detailer) that is in charge of that decision but that is highly unlikely.
. If you ever get a Japanese girl make sure she is not from Kenegawa prefecture. Also look for girlfriends in Shinjuku it's where women with jobs and money hang out. Japan is where all your sexual fantasies will come true.
