I think the Aqua di Gio line and its core DNA deserves a spot here too. The whole aquatics type of fragrance managed to appeal to a large group of new people. But to pick one that remained largely unchanged wouldnt be an easy task, so i can see why theres not a specific one up on the list.

While choosing a favorite is difficult, all deliver niche-worthy quality at an accessible designer price

I have to agree with you on Fahrenheit, and the "association" aspect as well. I don't really rock it anymore because of the "association" factor, but that doesn't mean it's not a all-time classic. Ganymede is also a modern-day classic, good video 👍🏼

We’ve kind have had a parallel history. I started earlier, because I’m old and my first fragrances were pretty classic feminine scents. I often sampled and incorporated some of the masculine masterpieces into my collection. I think the first “masculine” scent I bought was Eau Sauvage, Hermes l’Orange Vert was a classic but it has been diluted into obscurity. I love vetiver, leather and tobacco notes so I often explore the “masculine” fragrances.

Justin, I had my Terre D'Hermes posted for sale as I watched this 😅. But this past week, I smelled it on a guy downtown and I recognized it immediately. It smelled so good flowing through the air. That along with your video persuaded me to give it another chance. I was reminded of how I've had scents that I've hated and actually came to love. I took the sale post down mid video. Unboxed it, tried it again and just like that, I got vision of how I can dress this secnt up handsomely. So different from my sweeter frags, I feel it adds a bit of versatility to my collection. I'm definitely keeping it! That makes 4 on this list I have. Thanks, bro!

I love Habit Rouge, and I love samples in general. Like many, I started buying full bottles, mostly cheapies, that reviewers raved about. However, I later switched to buying samples only, and then getting full bottles of only those that truly wow me. That way, I get to try a BUNCH of frags, including those that are raved about but I found out to me are just so-so. But I keep my shelf stocked only with true loves.

Great video. I love Fahrenheit edt, have not used it in years but will always remain as one of my favorites. Egoiste is another favorite of mine though I prefer the Original rather than the platinum. Habit rouge is great. Fougere Royale sounds very interesting. Am not a very big fan of tea in perfumes but I do prefer the two Gris Charnel scents over SMW. CD Homme Dior may be a Masterpiece by definition but I never liked it, as it smells like a cross between diapers and lipstick on me! Timbuktu sounds interesting but at the same time seems to have a few things in common with the older Ricci Club including the hexagonal bottle! Chergui is amazing but very polarizing, I smelled it and I loved it, but it is not easy to wear, need the mood and the occasion for it. Terre is incredible and I have the original as well as the Givree, I have my eye on the EDP :). Tuscan Leather is one of my top leather perfumes, have it and love it. Jubilation original I loved it, but yes the Myrrh and other resins were way too powerful in it. Haven't smelled the new release yet. Aventus was great but I grew out of it. Ganymede I have yet to sample.

Thanks for including Timbuktu! It’s not mentioned very much, and that is a shame.. I have the new bottle version and I love the mature airy mysterious character, makes it perfect for professional occasions..I prayed it into some clothes this morning, after seeing this video, to check it’s performance.. Was still noticeable in the afternoon, though faint.. I feel this fits it’s unique profile, you want it mysteriously hangin in the air instead of it being pushed in your face (not that the old formulation does that, I’ve never smelled it)..

The real masterpieces in my (small) collection are terre de hermes, (though perfomance is bad) Gris Charnel extrait, and Ganymede. I agree the term masterpiece is thrown around too losely, and these fragrances are in my opinion the best from their respective houses, and the best work by their respective perfumers. Also, a new release - that i would consider a masterpiece, is Pantomime Act 5 from Holland. Absolute best vetiver, apart from TDH, that ive ever tried. fresh, longlasting, unique and very classy, and pretty good pricepoint. by the way, great videos man, really solid content and production quality.

I remember trying Chergui for the first time at Saks after watching a bunch of reviews and I absolutely couldn't stand it. It smelled to me like an old lady that rubbed tobacco on herself, stuff was nasty and so dense, like there wasn't any room for the molecules to move. I imagine this is what a hippy smelled like after playing with essential oils, big pass for me. I do remember going into the bathroom and scrubbing my skin for ages trying to get that stuff off. Platinum Egoiste though...that is an all time classic, too bad the reformulations have sacrificed the depth that it once had.

08:10 Could you please make a video about how perfumery looked like and developed over the past few decades? Even just with broad strokes. I was (almost) totally ignoring fragrances until recently, but that changed and I try to pick up bits of info every now and then, online. Roja Dove has a talk here titled 'Fragrance Through The Decades' that I found brilliant, but given how well you can talk about and present subjects, I'd be happy to see a video from you about some cultural history of fragrances, for people who had been living under a rock lol. Edit: I have little idea about what constitutes a designer or a niche fragrance. So far I was assuming that big houses with considerable resources (capital, market share, brand recognition) making mass-appealing, financially "safe bet" fragrances fall under the designer category, and smaller indie companies are niche. But now I wonder if there's more to this.

Good idea. I’ve touched on this idea in parts from different angles. It’s definitely a large topic to tackle all at once, because perfumery has branches in different directions all at the same time. Not too dissimilar from music, or visual art. The niche/designer dichotomy has been blurred a bit over time. So I personally choose to evaluate the difference on a fragrance-by-fragrance basis these days. There are niche houses who create mainstream, mass-appealing fragrances (ex. Parfums de Marly Percival). And there are designer brands that create niche fragrances; scents that do not appeal to the mass market (ex. Gucci Guilty Absolutely Pour Homme).

@@stayfreshproductions Ah, looking at it in that level of resolution makes more sense. Thank you for your reply and explanation! And I agree, the more I see iabout perfumery the more I realize that it really is an art form. So maybe even a video covering just the most notable trends of the recent decades would be a challange. Looks like every decent big or "indie" (is that even a term for them? lol) house inevitably creates a new branch or style with each well-received scent DNA they make. And again, great video, I really enjoy your style of presentation and delivery, and it seems like you enjoy making these videos as well. Keep up the great work!

Tried modeen timbuktu. As he said, longevity was beyond disappointing. Especially for a spicy vetiver scent. Tea for two and legendes du cedre from the same house are better.

Interestingly, you talked about Creed SMW, but not GIT as a "masterpiece". I think the combo of GIT/Cool Water set the trend for fresh smells in the late 80s and early 90s. Without these two brilliant creations by Pierre Bourdon, the fragrance landscape would have been so different.

It might be the original aftershave, but I don’t believe it is technically classed as a Fougère.

😂😂funny i have 3 mentioned M7; Declaration (parfum) and Terre d’Hermes. Classics and masterfully created. Looking to adding the new reformulation of Habit Rouge soon. 😂i’m a bit of a hard head and never read reviews before picking a fragrance to avoid being bias but i found your page after taking interest in Habit Rouge, now i’m positive. Thanks!

I'm not sure about 'timeless', but certainly some of these are fragrance superstars. Fougere Royale is on my radar. I barely remember Dior Homme 2005, but I do recall thinking "this is a guy's cologne???" and then walking away. Now it's ethereal...at least the 2011.

Current formulations of Fahrenheit are far off from the original I wore it in the 80s it literally smelled like a topping off the fuel on a hot lawnmower after cutting grass the name was very accurate. Today it’s still great but not what was available back then due to formula changes and restrictions. Where did that bottle go anyway

@@KannabisKowboyz not that I’m aware of I’ve heard people mention Amouage Portrayal man but I’ve samples it and personally don’t get a resemblance. I’d say current formula still smells good just not as pungent/aggressive can always look for a vintage bottle on eBay if the price isn’t outrageous
