I've received a number of these Abus 160-4 combination padlocks, always with a request to show how to decode them. The padlock is intended for low security uses, like school or gym lockers, and is quite easy to decode and open within a minute or so.

The inability to move from 0 - 9 is a feature of most combination locks. It enables you to open a padlock in the dark... scroll them downwards then they will all line up top 0-0-0. Then you can move each number up 1 by 1 until you dial the correct number

That spoils half the fun... picked up a combination lock because lockpicks are really hard to get where I live, and I've been practicing by keeping the code on 0-0-0 and just not looking at the lock until I was confident I can get it open and not gonna lose it to an unknown code. (btw that also solves the darkness issue, I just pick it open if there isn't enough light to use the code)

The stuck at 0 issue is a common design in these multiple dial combination locks. It is meant so you can quickly spin the dials after locking to reset to all zeroes. It should stop in only one direction.

This really helped me! I decided to stay at work a few hours later and was locked in so i couldn't get out, i tried to call my co worker bet he didn't answer. I made a similar tool from an old plastic cup and is now on my way home. Thank you very much

I am a very simple guy. And I amazed the fuck out of people by opening these locks just by picking numbers, and pull. Because 99 out of a 100 times the lock will slightly move and you know the digit is correct.

If you press the dial on left or right side and scroll up or down you re able to see a little hole under the wheel, allign the 3 hole and scroll up or down the 3 dial all together and for sure you find the right combination after 8 tentative :D

I have an Abus 160/50 lock which is quite similar to this, except it has four wheels instead of three, and the build tolerances seem to be a bit tighter. I don't have a thin enough shim/probe in my pick set to fit in there, but I assume a similar attack would work.

I tried with a 0.3 mm (~12 thousands of an inch) thickness scalpel blade, and the wheel does not have enough play to fit that to feel for the gate. I will have to try to get something thinner to see if this attack is viable with this model.

FWIW I have the Ace Hardware branded version. It's otherwise identicial. I can't reverse at Zero on any digit.

I just deployed three of the 160/50 4-dial locks on some outdoor spaces, just to keep the homless/tweakers out. If they bother to hammer on them, I'll just deploy something beefier I guess.

There would be a way to make it all but impossible to utilize this type of attack. I can't see it would be all that cost prohibitive either. Just have a wider face on the wheel with the numbers and a slot/notch to accept the overhang of the dial as it is turned.

Or you can just put tension on it and rotate the wheels one by one until they 'release' and are no longer under tension. Way easier and faster than decoding, usually...😅

What kind of lock 🔐 do you recommend for a backpack? I have a tactical range bag with pistol case spots that can be locked but seems the lock would be so small it’s pointless?

Honestly on a bag small enough to carry the locks are all pretty pointless if youe got valuables like handguns inside. If your bag has exposed zippers then they'll just separate them with a pen (bosnianbill has a vid on this) if its held shut with buckles then they can just cut the fabric, and most likely is that they'll just grab the whole bag and open in at their convenience later. If you've got a bag with obvious valuables inside, your only options for security are either keeping it in your sight at all times or locking the bag itself inside a more traditional metal locker with a stationary fixture and a good lock.

Why doesn't anyone make a "wheel" padlock that doesn't allow these easy and well-known exploits? Instead of having the code wheels be concentric with the exposed wheels, locate them behind the exposed wheels, and have the locking pawl engage the teeth in the exposed wheels before engaging the code wheels. The total number of parts would be the same, but the level of security should be substantially improved.

@ffec+ not that I have a problem with LPL but sometimes I see his uploads and then check later in the day and they are at like half a million views ?! None of my other big creators get views like that. It’s kinda weird. Could be algorithm, maybe something else 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@EastCoastMan603 I often watch LPL videos first. Most of his videos are under 5 minutes long, so it is easy for me to watch right away. Frequently, Bosnianbill's videos are well over 10 minutes long. I still watch all of the videos on this channel, but I often have to wait until later in the day (or even days later) before I can dedicate that time. In any case, I really enjoy both channels and have learned a lot from both Bosnianbill and LPL
