Looking at the growth rate of our norway spruce Christmas trees, we could compare video footage of our trees shortly after planting last year vs today to see how much the trees have grown.
~~About Us~~
We're a 43 acre Christmas tree farm in central Virginia. We bought the property in November 2018 and have been documenting our whole journey starting this business from the ground up. We don't have any ag experience prior to starting this business, so we're constantly learning as we go!

I didn’t see it mentioned here but that was a red tail hawk. Very cool!

We have lots of those hawks - help keep the rodent population down in the tree field, hopefully.

We just jot done with our watering for the trees and just pulled up about 300 ft of hose that we used to manually water our trees during our 10 errr 21 day drought. our next 7 days we have a good chance of rain each day

Hoping rain comes for you. We got 2 inches last week, so we're in pretty good shape!

Love the split screen comparison. We can grow Norways too here in Ohio. I sure wish they held their needles better because they are fast growers. Nice landscape tree though!

Thanks! Its neat to see the progress all around the farm now that we have over a year of video footage. Day by day doesn't look like progress, so its refreshing to see the longer-term comparison. I'm hoping I can sell Norways because I have a lot of them! haha!

Excellent growth on the 2-2 transplants. Glad to hear you did not plant any more Scotch pines this year. That’s the tree of the 1950’s. At this time and place picking off and killing the bag worm is the way to go. Just stay on top of it this year and next year you won’t have any. Good luck.

I was in the business back in the late '60's to early '80's in Michigan. Scotch pine was probably 80 percent of the market back then. It worked well for us back then, but I agree that it is a tree of the past. Frasier fir has become the tree of choice in Michigan these days. We couldn't grow them in the north back then. Douglas Firs could be grown in a small area of SW Michigan. We sold many of them on our retail lots back then. I just wish we could have had the hybrid version of Frasier Fir available back then.

What did you use as a cover crop? Just regular grass?

How often do you water in summer? We hit the trees once a week.
@WoodsTreeFarm

This year we've been doing about once a week if we don't have sufficient rainfall. last year we didn't do as much and lost a lot more trees.

When do you prune them for the first time? How big do they have to be? Thanks!!

if you see an issue like a double leader, fix it when you see it. Otherwise most people say at least two growing seasons or when the trees are ~3ft tall.

I planted 35 Norway Spruce this Spring 2020. They are vigorously growing but about half of them are about as wide at they are tall and don’t have a dominant leader. It is now late June 2020 and live in Missouri. When is the correct season to prune the excessive lateral growth and also prune for a dominant leader? Thanks!!

I think most growers would say leave your trees be for now. A leader may establish this year or next without your influence. Our last live video was about shearing. Some good info in there ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TOdABEdhPYo.html

How long does it take for a Norway to get Christmas tree height?
@WoodsTreeFarm

We gotten 18in growth each year, so we'll be ready about 4-5 years from planting.
