What a delightful episode, snake in the water, wagtail trotting on the path, a buzzard and ducks jumping for midges, and that's just for starters. That left me with a warm feeling adding to the warmth of the evening. Thankyou.
I lived in Droitwich for many years, I am living in the Philippines for more than 12 years. Your video made me home sick! The best narrowboat vlog available
Still in hospital. As you said right at the end of poem - we're on the right track. A wonderful video Vanessa. Such beauty in the countryside. Loved the buzzard. Your camera work and commentary was brilliant. Very professionally done
Oh ! What a soothing treat it was to view this ! The Pied Wagtail nearly stole the show ! As an American, I never cease to be amazed at all the many and varied species of birds you have roosting in England, it is a treasure-trove of undeniable beauty. The grass snake was looking for a good meal and the baby lambs were in for a lazy snooze. I'm simply in awe at how much I enjoy your poetry Vanesa, the way you voice over your prose while drawing images collected on your journeys is simply original as it is captivating. The fact that the BBC hasn't contracted with you to do a narrowboat series is beyond me, you are at the pinnacle of capturing and then artistically sharing the calming effects of life along the canal both in verse as well as imagery. Thank you once again for sharing this rare talent with us all, the world is so much better for it. I send you and Mr. M. my very best wishes for health, happiness and adventure. May God Bless You Both abundantly.
Thank you so, so much for such a heartfelt comment. It made me feel really happy to read it- you are so kind.🤗 I thoroughly enjoy every minute of filming, editing and filling my journal and it is a privilege to be able to share my content with viewers like you, who really appreciate it. Have a great weekend, take care🦋🌻
I was catching up on the bad and bonkers news and then your lovely vlog popped up and saved my life....slight exaggeration but it's good to see that there's still beauty and peace in England. 😊
i would love to live on a boat and just travel allround the places you have been too , your drawing and poems are awesome i will be buying your book and your cards too they are amazing great vidios
i will keep looking for a narrow boat so i can forfill my dream and make it a reality , hope you have a fab weekend too looking forward to more adventures and poems soon .
Another great vlog I have to say you are such an expert camera person your close up shot's are amazing like the little egg on the flower and I forgot to mention the close up of the bee putting pollen on the flower on you last video I have learned so much watching you videos over the last year or more thanks again for being there Steve
It is such a privilege to film nature and I am so happy to know how much you appreciate watching it. Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Steve. Take care🌻🦋
I really loved this, the dog door was super cute, Zephyr seemed thrilled to be using it. How amazing to witness a grass snake swimming in the canal, I’ve never seen one. I saw an adder in the New Forest, it slithered across our path when we were walking, so lovely to see. Another fabulous vlog to end the week. Thank you so much, stay safe you 3. xxxx
The dog door is such a wonderful idea and Zephyr knows that it is for her which makes me really smile. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a great weekend 🌻🦋
Hi Vanessa. If you haven't done Worcester yet, the Diglis Fish Pass and subterranean viewing gallery is a must see. It was built specifically for Twaite Shad, but the other twenty five species that have used it, don't know that. However, it's only open on Wednesday afternoons, 14-30 to 16-30, with groups of eighteen allowed in, every twenty minutes, By the way, we met at Woodwalton Fen, quite a while back. Have a great summer.
I remember you and your wife, David- it is lovely to know you are still following the channel. In my vlog #146 I visited the fish pass and it was amazing! I saw Chubb and Roach but no Twaite Shad, so I’ll have to go back while there is still time. Have a great weekend 🦋🌻
Your comment about following your nose reminded me of Douglas Adams' book "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency". When Dirk goes out in his car he navigates by 'following a car that looks like it knows where it's going. It never took him to where he wanted to go but it always took him to where he needed to be.'
Wow that snake in the water!! Beautiful photography as always Vanessa. Love your rooftop garden too - looks real good. Have a good weekend in the sunshine ☀️ Going off course is always fun - enjoy 🌼
Hi Margaret, I hope you are well? Thank you so much for your lovely comment- the snake was incredible to see and I hope I see more of them. Have a super weekend in the sunshine too, take care🌻🦋
Hello gorgeous, i have commented many times on your camera skills and how you show nature at it's best, but i thought i would just like to say that it's about time Zephyr got a mention, he must be the luckiest dog in the world, not only have great parents lol, living the life he leads in the countryside and the the happiness he must feel, i am sure he will lead a long and healthy life, thanks for that and also for another great vlog xx.
Zephyr is the best company wherever we take her. She really makes me laugh and she has such a gentle nature. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a great weekend 🦋🌻🐾🐾
Thanks Vanessa for taking us on this beautiful cruise to see all the wonderful views of countryside and fantastic wildlife. Your knowledge of the wildlife species is amazing. As always your journal is wonderful. Have a lovely bank holiday weekend. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Springtime on the canal is full of "oohs and ahhs" as all the fluffy feather babies bobble along past the boat!Thank you for your lovely comment. Take care🌻🦋
Morning Vanessa--I really enjoy your narrowboat garden that adorns both roof and bow with their variegated blossoms, fruit, and foliage. It must attract a lot of honey and bumblebees, as well as those ants crawling along your roof's edge. I'm glad that your tomatoes weren't knocked asunder as you made your way through the low tunnel. Such a lovely area to cruise plus go on walkies with Zephyr, who had a happy grin on her face. You certainly get your exercise cranking open the various locks. Some seem more difficult than others but fortunately a helping hand always seem to show up in time to lend an assist. I enjoyed the grass snake's serpentine slither through the water while the Pied Wagtail strutted its stuff along the towpath. Enjoy your weekend! Jenny 🦮🐝🌹🥀🍅🥬⛈🌤
Earlier this week when I subscribed, you picked up another “subscriber” - my 5-year old pointer-lab mix, Katie. I took a break from doing my taxes this morning and surfed around RU-vid until I saw this episode. Katie was sleeping in my office and as soon as she heard your voice, came running into the living room, jumped up on the couch and stared at the screen. She loves your channel! Zephyr is one of the few dogs she doesn’t bark at.
I think you can call this video postcard pictures , those pictures on biscuits containers, calendar pictures etc etc stunning video thank you and keep on narrowboating
Thank you so much 😊 I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Zeph is a happy dog and she makes me smile everyday. Enjoy the rest of your week, take care🌻🦋🐾🐾
Great video as usual. I would expect a narrow boat to be one of the safest places to be during a thunder storm. The boat, being a surrounding metal shell, will act as a Faraday cage and, if lightening does strike it the electricity will be guided around the outside into the earth and all inside will be safe and sound. Happy boating and keep up the wonderful work.
I’m running out of comments Beautiful stunning great etc etc but your vlogs are all the superlatives I can muster 💜💙❤️ It’s a dull chilly grey cloudy day here in Norfolk Tuesday 30th May so in my craft room knitting & enjoying your WONDERFUL VLOGS THANK YOU 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I love the idea of you sitting in your craft room, knitting and watching my vlogs- how wonderful to have a craft room!🤩 Norfolk is such an exciting part of the world for wildlife- what with the swallowtail butterfly and now the bee eaters as well! Thank you so much for such a kind comment. I am so pleased that you are enjoying watching. Take care🦋🌻
Hello Vanessa, excellent blog got to say the snake sure gets a move on so quick ,just love the wildlife you show so many different species the butterfly look amazing so clear you must have a excellent camera a nice history lesson wow is that really a butterfly egg ,you are so good at sketching amazing work and the poem so nice ,till next time take care keep safe,John 🇬🇧🌹🤭🦆🐔🧚🦋🦮
Hi John, thank you so much for your lovely and kind comment. If you look under the cuckoo flower- also called Lady's Smock, then you might find a tiny, tangerine teardrop sticking out from the stem- that is an Orange- Tip Butterfly egg! It is so exciting to find one- well, I get excited anyway!🤭 Have a super rest of the week, take care🌻🦋
Yet another lovely little video. Yes there are quite a few accidents with people not watching out at bridges, I was going under the railway bridge from Ely to the Fish & Duck and my sister was one the roof admiring the cows on the bank, she could see the bridge and I thought all was fine and next thing I know she got distracted by frolicking cows and forgot about the bridge, luckily it hit her on the side of her head but it knocked her flying and she nearly rolled of the roof, there was nothing I could do from my vantage point on the tiller, I felt so helpless, I screamed duck but she was oblivious. All was well thank God, she is a tough old boot my sis, but all the same I kept phoning her for a few days to make sure there was no lasting damage. My friend had exactly the same thing happen. The thing with a wide beam is there is such a great space on the roof for chairs etc and getting a great view from up there! You should check out the low bridges tiny movie I sent you on another comment.
Another lovely video, your book arrived safely together with a lovely card explaining why the book was dedicated to my daughter Emma, she ordered it from Etsy because computers hate me and I hate them right back. I did suggest that as it was dedicated to her she should pay for it, she wasn't keen , outdaughtered again. But I am really enjoying reading it. I must be about a third of the way through your vlogs by now and enjoying every one.
I am so pleased that your book arrived with your card- thank you so much for buying it. I have made a Playlist of all of the vlogs that follow the book which you might have seen; it's called 'The Nature Journal of a Narrowboater 2022'. I will message you a trophy if you stick with the channel and finish all of my vlogs- 1/3 of the way through deserves a medal though...🥉 Here you go! Take care🦋🌻
Finding an orange-tip egg, is like discovering a piece of treasure! It is lovely that you are planting to feed the butterflies. Thank you so much for your kind comment. Have a great weekend, take care🦋🌻
Lovely area, Vanessa. So pretty everywhere, especially that Hall and Coach House. Very good of the passer-by to lend a hand with the swing bridge. Some of the lock paddles looked hard for you to operate. I walked down Caen Hill locks recently and there is so much water , it was pushing against the paddles, making it difficult to operate some of them. Thanks for another wonderful video x
A lovely peaceful start to the weekend, thank you. The swan on the nest looks so serene, she better make the most of it =-)..... in a couple of weeks or so she will need all her wits about her keeping her cygnets safe. Take care =-)
Hanbury church is the inspiration for the chum in 'the archers'. Inkberrow is a lot of the rest. The Jinney ring is an interesting craft centre near hanbury church
I so enjoy the area you went through, that are I would early love to visit but I seriously doubt I could get my wife to fly form North Carolina to England, she is not a fan of flying! You narration and videos you provide are simply beautiful. Regards Leon Daniels
Thank you for all of the usual helpful and interesting info Vanessa, and in return 😀 Me thinks you could do with a longer SHAFT on your gate Paddle Cranking Handle, it would I'm sure, with the extra leverage, make it easier on your arms and your back👍🦮
Straight passed our abode you have floated along the canal you have boated through town and through the tunnel between that we are. Look up Trench woods where the butterflies, hares and deer roam our favourite place near home.
Beautiful Just needs a Health n Safety course on going under low bridges 😉😉 anyway nother grand video thank you. Happy Bank Holiday to you both All the best Gary n Irene
I think i better book myself on that health and safety course sooner rather than later😂 Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a great weekend 🌻🦋
Ah, that book of yours...imagine if it became as popular as The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady!? What are you going to call it? 'The Canal Diary of a Narrowboat Lady'? 😂
🤗 What a kind comment, Lizzie! Thank you so much. I am just lucky to be able to visit these amazing places with a camera in my hand. Have a super weekend, take care🦋🌻
I must do this canal. Looks pretty but hard work for single boaters. Can you remember the Slough arm canal and could I do it in summer? Silver prop down there? Great vlog as usual Mindful family.
Hi Will, I do remember the Slough Arm, but I was there in the winter and it was really easy. Looking at what you have done to date though, I would say that you’d find it a breeze, even if it might be a bit shallow. Have a Cricktastic weekend!🦋🌻
As usual Vanessa a excellent and beautiful vlog 😊, ur nose👃 does u justice in finding such lovely places. What a amazing amount of colour now on the canal bank with the bouquet of scent all around u, now quick the scenery has changed in few weeks. Did u get any ants in ur boat? Thank u again and l hope u have a pleasant Bank Holiday weekend. 🐕🐤🐓🦋🏵🦢🦆
Hello Simon, thank you so much for your lovely comment. I didn’t get any ants inside the boat- not that I have noticed anyway- plenty of spiders though which I enjoy watching. I read your brochure last night and I think your boat is brilliant- I’ll send you an email this evening. I am so excited for you🤗 Have a great weekend 🦋🌻
Thanks Vanessa, am watching your vids twice now as it's such a lovely time in nature especially this time of year!! You have some amazing hawthorn flowers all around you there - have you tried hawthorn tea, very good for the heart and tastes nice too.
Hi Mary, it is so lovely to know that you watch the vids twice- thank you so much.🤗 The Hawthorn blossom has been incredible this year- so many people are talking about it. I haven't tried hawthorn tea, but I will now. Have a super rest of the weekend, take care🦋🌻
Your videos always impress me! This one no different, and I love that you follow your nose(but also glad you have a map!). Your knowledge of plants, insects, birds is impressive -- is it a skill acquired from your previous life, or did you develop it since moving onto a narrowboat?
Hi Deb, I am also glad that I had a map too!😅 Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I have always had an interest in nature but I have started to learn more about the wildlife around me since I have been on the boat. Have a super weekend, take care🦋🌻
Thanks again for a wonderful Vlog ! Your journal and poetry are amazing and sharing your knowledge of nature is brilliant. I hope I am not the 100th person to ask you but have you watched the movie "Where Crawdads sing" ? The movie reminded me of you regarding the art and nature knowledge ! Blessings to you Mr M. and Zeph Keep up the amazing work ! Mike Bootes Pietermaritzburg South Africa.
Hi Mike, thank you so much for such a lovely comment. You are only the second person to have mentioned the movie, "Where the Crawdads Sing" to me. I have watched it and I think the girl's drawing is amazing so I am very flattered to be compared to her. Blessings to you all too. Have a wonderful week, take care🌻🦋
How nice you have cards to buy. Cool. I tried but not got any sales yet. Lovely to be here again. Good to have sunshine at last. Makes us all happy. Scary to be on your boat in a thunder storm. It is bad enough in a house. Zephyr is such a lovely dog and I am not a dog person. So how much free solar heat do you get per week?
Hi Vanessa, this time of year we have enough solar to power us through with all of our electrical items. It is so good having the solar panels. Thank you for your lovely comment. Have a super rest of the weekend, take care🌻🦋
Good to see the grass snake. Point of fact, ALL SNAKES ARE VENOMOUS, just that the only one considered venomous in UK is the adder, as its the only one that can be fatal. Most snakes labelled as non-venomous, only means in relevance to humans, they would affect you no more than an insect or spider bite.
I only recently discovered your channel and I absolutely love your vlogs..! Not least because my late wife loved the countryside and the animals and birds inhabiting it. Like you she was inspired to keep a diary/journal by reading Edith Holden. I'm sure I saw somewhere you mentioned your journal may be published? I hope so as I would love to get my hands on a copy. Is it likely to happen any time soon?
Welcome to the channel, Ed! 👋 It is lovely to know that your wife kept a nature journal too; I'm sure her artwork is a real treasure of yours. You asked about my journal- well I have scanned in 2022's diary and sent the jpeg files to the same printer who makes my cards and calendar. It is going to take a while though as he has to resize them all and arrange them onto pages to be made into books. I want to keep the cost low, so I haven't published- I'm just getting copies made. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Have a super weekend- take care🦋🌻
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. In answer to your question, I just walk incredibly slowly, almost backwards it's that slow and that's when I spot something. Have a super week, take care🦋🌻
Venessa, I am the person that advised you to turn your talents into a commercial property by selling your pictures and writings. Right now you MUST copyright all of your drawings, writings, and all by-products. If you don't someone will slip under the blankets and because you haven't registered anything steal them from you. If you have already registered the products then I'm sorry to interfere. One second further please, Get a mug and plate manufacturer to use your drawings for mugs and plates as a series and the porcelain manufacturer will almost certainly help you further to protect his purchase and do a series of mugs and side plates and all you have to do is promote them along with Christmas calendars, just 12 for a year. You have a given talent, use it to your advantage and swelling your bank account. Ray Richards
I am very grateful for your encouragement and support. I never set out thinking that my journaling would be worth selling. You have raised an interesting point that I hadn’t considered, so I’ll look into it now. Thank you so much 😊 Have a great weekend 🦋🌻
Venessa, it isn't your journeying that is the value but your perception and communication that are such jewels in your crown. Ray Wedwood started small, who knows where "Venessa" could be In 2223 with proper promotion. I am telling you, you have a wonderful individual gift.
If you're still reading comments to these videos, I have a question please. When you opened the bridge or standing by the lock, who is steering the boat?
My husband is operating the boat during those times. He can't appear on the vlogs due to his work's strict code of conduct about social media. Thank you for watching- take care🌻🦋
loved the wagtail shots which camera do you usei was thinking of a go pro 11 but they get lots of bad press on reliability cool to hear greeting cards are on their way
Hi Roy, thank you for your lovely comment. I use a Panasonic Lumix 2000 for my wildlife shots; my phone (iPhone 6) and an old Go Pro Hero which I got secondhand. Have a super rest of the week, take care🦋🌻
So the woman eloped while married committing bigamy? Wasn't that a terrible crime in those days? I had to reply that a couple of times. Eloping leaving your husband behind. That would cause some gossip. Love your watercolors. So beautifully done. Jane, Philadelphia
It was a terrible crime in those days and that is why, I think she hid away and could only return when her husband had passed away. Some say that she haunts the house now! Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a super weekend, take care🦋🌻
I travel with my husband, who I call Mr Mindful- Mr M for short. He really doesn't want me to film him at all as he doesn't do any social media and his work wouldn't approve either. He is really happy that I am making the videos though as it is a record of our journey. Thank you for watching. Have a great weekend, take care🦋🌻
