In this first video in our new "15-Acre Fixer-Upper" series, NDA Communications Manager Brian Grossman introduces you to his new small acreage property that he bought back in December of 2020. We take a look at the layout of the property as well as Brian's big-picture goals for improving the habitat and deer hunting. In subsequent videos, we will dive into specific projects on the property to help achieve those big-picture goals.

I love this idea and showing the whole process for a property that is attainable for a lot of hunters. It is my dream to eventually have something like this that is 15-20 acres for us to also live on....one day.

I got 38 ac in NW middle west GA. (probably close to you) Got a lot of hardwoods a big creek and dense trees. 5 -6 years ago I had a guy with a skid steer bush hog cut all the privet and small trees. It opened things up but I need to get some bigger trees cut to open things up. 4-5 years ago I had a mulcher in another area and it opened things up well. Deer love my place. I plant a small .5-1 ac food plot in clover and whatever else. I have planted crab apples, pears, figs (they love them) and plums as well as regular apples and peaches for me if I can get some. I want to do some of the mineral stumps. I have enjoyed yalls videos and look forward to learning. hearing what yall are doing. Bit of advise, unless you are going to trap and or hunt the coons and squirrels don't feed the deer, their population will explode. I do only plots and natural browse now.

Looking forward to this project and following along! That 15 lays out very, very nicely no doubt about that. Best of luck. We're going to take on a new one ourselves here but I like watching others do this kind of stuff. Take care thanks

Brian - Looking forward to the series. Soon moving to some family property outside Columbus and trying to learn all I can from NDA about habitat management so this really helps. Roughly where is your property?

What herbicide can I use to terminate unwanted hardwoods? Is glyphyosate alone a suitable chemical?
@DeerAssociation
@DeerAssociation 2 года назад
Jay, it depends on the type of tree, size, and method of application. If you're referring to the girdle and squirt method shown in the video, glyphosate (fully concentrated or diluted 50/50 with water) will kill some trees. A better mix, however, is imazapyr, triclopyr and water as described in this article on our website - www.deerassociation.com/deer-habitat-in-a-squirt-bottle-part-2-tools-teams-and-techniques/

Your food that you are harvesting that is supposed to be organic is no longer organic when you add these chemicals.
