When I was very young, my mother had an Isetta. She loved it because (to her) it was a cute little car. My dad hated it, because it was so hard to get parts in the US. The article doesn't mention it, but this car has only one door. The whole front end opens up, and the steering wheel and dash is attached to the door and swings out of the way to get in. Look closely at the first few images of this one when that segment begins, and you can see the hinges and handle.

Renault Twizy is my choice because its just so much fun and the price is right. You can also actually get windows, storage, etc.

Renault Twizy actually does 60mph they sell doors separately and they also sell window for about £300-$500. You pay the for battery a month for £45 - $69

The Norwegian Buddy was actually a Danish car named Kewet, and was already produced in 1991 with the environmental in mind.

Issetta (Buble car) reminds me of my childhood there was a lot of them around in the 1960's. Hinkle's were less common.

A Smart what I hear you say? It's a Smart 'For-two'. (4, 2), because it's for two people. As apposed to the Smart ForFour, which is for 4 people.

The original Isettas were 4-wheel vehicles. A British firm, under license from BMW, did come out with a three-wheeled version to get around some British licensing rules. The three-wheelers were, of course, more prone to roll-over.

Interesting cars! I hope to see one I seen about 1975 in North Platte, NE. It was an egg shaped car, one wheel in front and 2 in back, like it was built on a triangular platform. It was a 2 door, looked like it would take off in sales as it looked well made, but built when people favored big cars!

If regulations allowed, the Vespa 400 would probably sell quite well today. Problem is that the manufacturer would probably give it a bigger engine, air conditioning, power steering... and would want $30 000.

meshershmitt KR200 could go on the list. That was made from old ME109 cockpits. 2 seater tandem seats. havnt seen 1 of them since about 1970. 1 of the boys in my school had 1 in his garden rusting to bits. Its smaller than the bubble car. The bubble car my brother in law had had 3 seats in the front for adults and 2 seats in the back for kids. not sure is it was the isseta but it had the BMW badge on the front. we only knew it as a bubble car. looks like the isseta in ur vid but a bit bigger. but i was only about 5 or 6 when he had it. everything looks bigger when ur little. All i remember about it was i had to climb over the front seat to get into the back seat as it didnt fold down. We went to the beach in it. when we got back to the car we had to wait a few hrs before we could get in it as someone parked so close to the front of it we couldnt get the door open. Prob with those tiny cars with just 1 door on the front is if u have a head on collision ur stuck and cant get out.

You missed two. The Kenguru and the Chariot Solo. Both were intended to be driven by wheelchair riders, from their wheelchairs. Yes, the wheelchair became the driver's seat.

The Brutsch Mopetta is splendid, the BMW Isetta too! I want it like that ... And the Vespa 400 for the summer ... The Peel Trident does not lack originality, for a Marsian. For the Pea Car, this is what happens when you fart inside! I love these cars.

Oh dear, no Bond Bug/three wheel variants, Reliant Regal, Reliant Robin, Reliant Kitten, Reliant Rebel, Reliant Fox, also Mr Agg of Trojan F1 fame made his own version of the Heinkel at his factory in London which the proceeds from helped him collaborate with McLaren on their Formula 1 cars. The Vespa Ape and Lambretta van, Reliant girder fork van, Raleigh predecessor of the same design deserve worthy mentions as does the Hillman Imp which was positively futuristic in its day.

Again, they are all very cool, some more than others, but no single car stood out as they are all funky and cool.

Gasoline: Smart by Mercedes. Electric: Twizzy by Renault. Oldys: Isseta Bmw Messeschmitt, etc.

I really appreciate these mini-cars but they don't stack up well compared to a Ford F-250 in a fender-bender! Some of these would be great for city meandering.

This is what a company like Harley Davidson should be concidering , now there customer demographic is getting too old for 2 wheels 😂🤣

Compressed Air is incredibly inefficient, when atmospheric air is compressed to +/- 100 psi approximately 85% of the energy required becomes heat which must then be dispersed, thus yielding only 15% of usable compressed air. Their website says they plan to build compressor stations using solar, wind and hydro power which they will have to because it's unlikely that these tanks are being filled to only 100 psi (more likely 5000-6000 psi) and thermodynamics (heat of compression) go up as the pressure increases. For example you can throw a lit match into diesel fuel and the match will be extinguished, however if you compress air to 2000psi it's now hot enough that the same diesel fuel spontaneously combusts without the need for spark ignition. This will also be a factor in the production of the compressed air for fueling the vehicle as it will have to be cooled before it can be used. It would seem to me the only advantage over an EV is recharge time, in that if you had available a purpose built and operational refilling station this unit can be refilled in a few minutes, however since there aren't any of those and won't be it states it can be "charged" from a plugin outlet in 4 hours(advantage over EV gone), indicating it has an onboard compressor, in which case the previously mention inefficiency of compressed air in fully in play(advantage over gasoline gone). At that point it's really just a conversation starter that hasn't been crash tested. Now aside from price I think that the Tango actually looks like it has potential to be a real game changer, especially if they stop putting lead ballast in and replaced it with more batteries. I think a better engineered suspension system and perhaps a couple inches of width combined with taller tires that raise the spindles NOT the vehicle height might get this thing into the mainstream, but again not at >$100k.

I still wait for the battery prices and the surcharge for low volume production to go down on electric vehicles. Hope to get my first BEV befor 2025. At the moment my favorite small car would be the smart fortwo EV. The twizzy looks to be fun, but it's too cold for winter. The Uniti from Sweden might be another alternative, but I think there will be many other options to chose from in 2025.

So which is the most economical and affordable which has a top speed of say 70 mph?

The air-powered vehicle is a dead-end. Electric, albeit still expensive, has the better future thanks to increasing infrastructure and better batteries.
