You forgot the movie Follow the Sun starring Glenn Ford as Ben Hogan and Ann Baxter as Mrs. Hogan. It's a biography about Ben Hogan, his early struggles, car crash, recovery, etc. There is real footage of Ben Hogan and Jimmy Demerate hitting golf shots. All shots that were supposed to be Glenn Ford were actually Ben Hogan.
"The Greatest Game Ever Played" was the best in my opinion because it was more than a golf movie as it got into class distinction and segregation. It was beautifully shot and full of drama even though we knew how the match would end. But "Tin Cup" had the best line of all, "There always comes the defining moment. You either define it, or it defines you." And that is so, so true.
I'm 71 and I've been playing since '68. I've seen all of these movies and I would go along with your selections except for " The Greatest Game Ever Played " belongs at the number one spot.
No 1 the greatest game ever played (unbelievable, very accurately told) No 2 Seve (not even mentioned, very emotional ending) No 3 Follow the sun (not mentioned, Glen Ford playing Ben Hogan)
Ben Hogan was technical advisor for that film. Also when Hogan, Demeret, and Byron Nelson teed off at Riviera GC, those were their real swings. Hogan hit several of the shots in that film that were not closeups. Paulmelville2126 it should be noted almost all of the film was accurate except for the caddie master giving Francis golf lessons before the open. Francis was already winning every amateur event around Boston. The other inaccuracy of the film was that That course was the course that Francis caddied at for a living. He knew every blade of grass there. And Lastly Francis basically won the Open by the 12th hole. He was four shots up on Ray and Vardon and went on to win by four strokes. But, that would not make for exciting drama. All that I mention here can be found in the book. It's a great read, also about Vardon and Ray. Harry Vardon suffered from the affects of TB which is why his right hand had the shakes.
Bagger Vance is a movie were you learn the most important thing in golf. You play in the present not in the future and not in the past. Best movie for a golf player who search to get better ;)
Thank you for the list. The top 5 are pretty different for me: 1. Greatest game Ever Played - for me this is not even close. It's very well directed. It's based on a true story. It has so many lessons about life and golf but is also extremely entertaining. 2. The Legend of Bagger Vance - Many have these 2 switched and i respect that. I just think that while The Legend also delivers in all the categories, the true story and realism of The greatest game put's it over the top. 3. Caddie Shack - Maybe the greatest comedy of all time and it just happens to be abotu golf. I agree Bill Murray stope the movie which is crazy since he originally only had a few minor scenes. But when he came to shoot they extended his stay and added a lot more content for him. The entire scene with him and "Ty" in his garden house as Ty plays through is adlibbed by both. It is classic. 4. Tin Cup - Great performance by Kevin Costner and all. What a great cast. Excellent and entertaining story. But #1? Sorry, not at all. I almost put it 5th. 5. Happy Gilmore - I truly love this movie. Adam Sandler is great but Christopher MacDonald is spot on as the jerk. There are so many iconic scenes. The dream sequence is one of the best - thank you Julie Bowen ;-)
Caddyshack is a classic. The ultimate golf movie as Alice Cooper would say. Happy Gilmore to me comes second because Adam Sandler’s character is a hockey player that turns to golf. Must haves for a dvd collection.
I guess everyone has different taste's, but this would be my top 5. 1. The greatest game ever played 2. The Legend of Bagger Vance 3. Happy Gilmore 4. Tin Cup 5. Caddyshack. I didnt like Caddyshack that much but ive only watched 5 golf movies so its in there at 5 haha.
@@patrickmorgan4006 thats why everyone has their own opinions. Im sure your top 5 movies ever is not ever close to my top 5 movies ever (not just golf movies) 😉
Happy Gilmore is not only the best golf movie, but one of the funniest movies of all time. It by far has attracted more people to golf than any other golf movie and made fun of the “weird social and stature culture” that the golf industry is awkwardly known for.
I always wished they made a part 2 to this movie. It was a great movie and if you watched this movie and been to the driving range I sure you've tried the Happy gilmore shot haha
Such a great movie. I will be watching all the movies on this list in the coming month. Outside of Tin Cup, which one have you added to your watch list?
My favorite line in that film is when Charlize Theron wakes up and see four bankers at the foot of her bed and she says, "Oh my God, I died and am in hell." 😂
Also left out the bio film Seve.
Happy/Caddy/Tin Cup are all good comedy make believe movies,,,, Bagger Vance is a great movie,,,,BUT “The Greatest Game Ever Played” is the best….first its a true story about over coming adversity and the class system, working hard and achieving, even as an amateur to win the Open….and in the end being a great person….even when you won no more than a trophy!!!!
There is a movie I watched a couple years ago about a lazy or maybe drunk PGA instructor at a golf course who is kind of forced to take on a bunch of kid golfers. The kids I think are teens that are in trouble, or “troubled teens”. Does anyone know the name of this movie? I can’t remember and can’t get Google to cough up a name. It’s not on anyone’s top of lists but I thought it was pretty good.
I can't take the list seriously after listening to the ludicrous narration. Golfers being referred to as golf players? Tommy's Honour being set in the 1960s? ... Only a hundred years off ... Then there's the mispronounciations ... Francis Wee-MAY? Molly GrisWORLD? I can forgive the narrator, he's just a hired gun who likely knows nothing about golf. But the writer and producer should be ashamed of themselves.
Not exactly a golf movie, I believe that the Disney cartoon "Goofy On Golf" is a must see. My own favorite golf stories are hardly the "feel-good-and-overcome-obstacles-in-Life" silliness type. Those are only Hollywood formula scrapings. Also, I have a personal allergy to Adam Sandler, so I miss the point of Happy Gilmore. In fact, it is a parody and seems to entitle any oaf to ruin any foresome. I wonder why a film derived from Golf in the Kingdom (Michael Murphy) is still in utero? Incidentally, if you want to see truly amazing satires on golf, golf technique, and the mild insanity caused by a fascination/obsession with golf, scan RU-vid for golf instruction. THAT's the real world of day-to-day golf.
Sorry, but "The Legend of Bagger Vance" should be further down on the list. No way that it belongs higher on the list than "Caddyshack", just to name one.
The top 4 is crap. Greatest game ever played should've been number 1 followed by bobby Jones and Tommy's honor. Kevin crapners swing was so beginner level it killed the movie
Costner's swing was better than Don Johnson's, but to your point, I liked "Tin Cup" better than those other three (in terms of being entertaining), but they were all really good. I would put "Caddyshack" at #2 and drop "Bagger Vance" below your top 3.
@@24Golf well an adaptation of Golf in the Kingdom exists but it is a bit hard. Clint has bought the rights: I guess he is maturing the decision to start shooting. It will be good I am sure.
#1. The Greatest Gamer Ever Played. ( great true story, great acting, directing, cinematography ) #2. Happy Gilmore ( cult comedy classic ) #3. Seve ( rags to riches true story about a great golfer ) #4. The Legend Of Bagger Vance ( almost as good as “ Greatest Game Ever Played but not quite ) The rest.. Caddyshack ( dated comedy ) Tin Cup, the story line is eh and the end was very anticlimactic. Over rated. Just my opinion. : )
