15 Big Restaurant Chains That Filed For Bankruptcy

Our favorite restaurants are vanishing from sight as worsening economic conditions continue to squeeze U.S. businesses. With shoppers eating out less and tightening their budgets, even big names in the industry are seeing their operations rot from within. Over the past three years, over 160,000 restaurants have been permanently closed around the country, and unfortunately, that trend is still picking up force in 2023.
It’s hard to believe but even the biggest and most successful fast food chains in the world aren’t immune to bankruptcies among franchisees. Just a couple of months ago, Rice Enterprices LLC declared bankruptcy and shuttered all of the McDonald’s restaurants it operated. Serious labor issues involving minors led the franchisee to face a millionaire lawsuit that affected the brand as a whole. Last month, the company announced hundreds of store closings, not only in America, but all across the globe. Some of its formats have become outdated, executives say. The decision was made after a team of board members discussed the growth potential of certain locations and decided to focus on the ones with higher financial returns, excluding struggling stores from its portfolio.
Owned by the same parent company as Burger King, the popular chicken chain Popeyes also dealt with the bankruptcy of one of its biggest franchisees this year. Premier Cajun Kings was founded by Manraj "Patrick" Sidhu in 2018, and by the next year, he had tripled the number of stores he operated, and they generated over $30 million in annual sales. Tragically, Mr. Sidhu passed away in May 2022, and his business was never able to fully recover from the loss of its sole manager. Declining sales, soaring costs, and operating losses forced the franchisee to close a large number of restaurants in Alabama and Tennessee. Some stores were evicted by a landlord, leaving the company with only half of its locations. In March 2023, PCK finally filed for bankruptcy. "This tragic loss, coupled with various macroeconomic factors, has caused tremendous uncertainty and disruption within the business," court documents from the bankruptcy filing read.
Similarly, Chuck E. Cheese has marked generations and gained huge popularity over the decades. Founded in San Jose, California, the pizza chain is a hit amongst kids, but that doesn’t mean things have always been easy for the company. The chain isn’t new in bankruptcy court, with its first filing recorded in 1984 when it was carrying a debt of $50 million in defaulted bonds. Its parent company, Pizza Time Theater decided to seek court protection to avoid corporate destitution. Even though that helped the chain to stay in business, it didn't ensure the chain's long-term survival, especially in the middle of a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic. Only this time around, the company held a $705 million debt. Up until this day, the future of Chuck E. Cheese remains uncertain. But given the size of its debt load, only a miracle can save the chain from filing for bankruptcy again in the near future. When a company files for bankruptcy, it doesn't immediately free itself of all prior financial obligations. A series of financial arrangements need to be agreed upon, and, as a result, a Chapter 11 bankruptcy generally takes between six months and two years to resolve. This means many of these businesses are now sitting in limbo, waiting to be rescued or about to die out. With a recession at our door, it is difficult to see which ones will be the survivors.
That's why today, we decided to list some of Americans' beloved food joints that are reducing operations or going out of business this year.

The chicken is usually expired and unsafe to eat unless you buy the most popular, high turnover crunchy chicken. We use to cheat and replace the expiration markers so we didn’t have to throw it out. I saw the assistant manager pick up a chicken breast off the floor and put it back under the warming rack because every piece of chicken has to be inventoried and accounted for and that goes against your work record if there is a loss. Never order a chicken little unless you get the mayonnaise on the side, it will be made fresh and no bacteria growing on the mayo🤢

My girlfriend and I skipped breakfast yesterday, because she had a doctor appointment early, after the appointment it was still early, so we decided to stop at McDonald's for a "cheap and quick" breakfast, only to stand there for nearly a half an hour, BEFORE being told to use the now computer kiosk to order our food from!! We don't use machines, like those self check out lane in the stores, so we just LEFT McDonald's and considered out "options" for "where to eat?"!!! We decided Denny's wasn't too far away, and they have all day breakfast....so we drove there, and quickly became disappointed there too!! Ordering the "Value Slam" meals for both of us, you get ONE egg, and one of everything like bacon, sausage and in my case one slice of French Toast! Hardly seemed like a "value" and the food wasn't even worth the price we'd paid for it, which was almost $35 for what little bit of food we actually got!! We agreed that next time we'd go to our favorite Mom and Pop joint to eat!! As the last time we were at that place, our meal was nearly $10 cheaper, the food was better quality and YOU GET more of it!!

I think things were headed in this direction even before the pandemic. The pandemic just accelerated the problem. People are becoming aware of all the junk & non food stuff added in. These things are a major contributor to our modern day health crisis. They are little more then empty calories with little if any nutritional value. Because of the pandemic & so many people's sudden reduced or loss of income people were forced to learn or relearn cooking skills. They began to realize that home cooked food made with real food & knowing precisely what is in their food took hold. I'm sure people are also realizing that their health is improving. Hopefully this trend will continue. There are so many nutritious meals people can make at home in the same amount of time it took to go to a fast food joint & that it cost the same or less. Fast food should never of become a way of life. It's ok for an occasional treat but not for everyday subsidence.

McDonald's CEO said paying workers $15 an hour won't hurt them. I've even done the math based on their own numbers. They would only need to increase the price of JUST BURGERS by a few cents to make it work. A big part of that is fast food is a volume based business. It wasn't so much the price of the burger, it was how many they sold. The bigger issue was covid and a change and spending patterns...combined with greed. I have growing kids, 2 boys, 10 and 12. I'm a professional cook, so normally I cook at home. We rarely went out to eat. When we did, it was a nice sit down place. For example, we like the Crooked Pint. Burgers there range from $12.99-16.99. They offer a kid's hamburger for $7.99. My boys have been obsessed with Burger King lately. I picked them up some the other day...both got a double whopper with fries and a medium drink...over $30...Granted, 2 of their burger patties is a lot of meat, but 30 bucks for 2 kids is outrageous. (I'm actually looking at their menu now and it says a double Whopper is $11.34? Not sure why the prices are different. Location maybe?) Anyways, the prices of these places are excessive and not inline with what they ACTUALLY need. They are being greedy and people are catching on, which is a big part of why their volume is dropping.

Anyone believing these jobs are unskilled has never done them. It takes far more physical work, mental effort, and knowledge of rules and laws to work in fast food than it has in any office or factory job I've worked. Adults have always worked in fast food, often in management roles, but not always. In all my years growing up working in the food industry from the '90s to the early '10s, our staffing was always 50/50 kids and adults. Often older adults with families. My mom made $30k as a store manager in the '90s, which is the equivalent of a little over $60k today. Know what the average store manager wage is today? Depending on the area, as low as $24k and as high as $50k. I was there when the minimum wage in my state became $7.25/hour back in There is a clear and obvious disparity and it isn't with the work force. Wages have not kept up with inflation rates and the lowest-paid workers have always suffered for that fact. It's by design. The trouble is not and has never been the sort of people who opt to work in those jobs. The fact anyone is so fucking entitled that they think there's anything wrong with working those jobs is despicable. There's nothing wrong with it, and some people don't have the talent or drive to work somewhere else. Some people legitimately just like the job. To try and say these people don't deserve a living wage just because one doesn't respect the job they do and don't care the people up top are making literal billions to do literally nothing makes one part of the problem. There will never be a lack of jobs for youth and low skill workers. These restaurants are largely floundering right now BECAUSE people don't want to work there for subpar wages. Just about every fast food restaurant in the country has hiring signs up and can't keep staff. No one wants to be under that level of stress and micromanagement just to be disrespected by their bosses, the general public (like in this post), and at the end of every two weeks, their paycheck. The death of fast food restaurants leaves the field open for mom and pop diners to open back up, which is really kind of the best case scenario. Put the money back in the local economy, not the pockets of billionaire CEOs, trust fund babies, and investors. Stop runaway market capitalism and focus back on the community.

When a $6 meal is now over $10, I stopped eating out. It became more expensive. Add a gratuity that didn't exist before and I'm more likely to have a slice of pizza for a couple bucks instead, or use the deli in the grocery store. A common denominator in the closures is debt. Instead of expanding with profits and avoid the cost of debt, low interest rates encouraged borrowing, only to be hit later with rising debt service costs. This required more money to service the debt, but rising prices reduced sales, so the revenue to service the debt failed to materialize. It is time to become and stay debt free in times of high cost of debt. Growing locations on debt is dangerous if the cost of debt changes. The customers respond to rapidly rising prices and seek affordable alternatives.
@jamesnash6101
@jamesnash6101 Год назад
Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not a financial guy. So... a synopsis, of what you're saying is: The borrower barrowed at low interest. But over time that interest was adjusted higher, and higher. And then the borrower raised prices to pay debt. And over time, the whole system collapsed. Because the prices were j6st too expensive for their client base.
@isettech
@isettech Год назад
@@jamesnash6101 No correction needed. The chains with high debt,now have high debt service (Interest) payments. Rising retail prices above the rate of inflation to increase revenue, resulted in lower sales. Do you remember the $6 Wopper meals, and go kink for a buck more? That was the burger, large fries, and large drink for under $10. Now the bare burger without the meal is listed on their website for $9.99. McDonalds had, not sure if still has any size soft drink for $1. The BK price for a soft drink is over $4. Who pays over $4 for just a soft drink? Hit the corner convenience store and get one of any size for under $2 instead. There is always a line at McDonalds and Wndy's, but never a line at Burger King. There is a reason for that, even when when the soft serve is always broken.

Yes, restaurants recently have started to raise prices yet again and probably need to as food is up and up. We were in our local Safeway supermarket and bread $5.99 loaf of Sourdough and same for Rye. The Cheapest whole wheat bread was $3.69 per loaf! Wow. We do not buy regular sandwich white bread loaves or the same "Wheat" that is not Whole Wheat grain.

The quality got worse and the prices higher. I live in Europe, and MCD got kinda deluted what they are actualy selling, and changed the "restaurants". Now each burger is made fresh, that resulted in the fact that MCD is no0t able anymore to give you a meal for 4 peopel where everything is hot, and the waiting times can be 10 -15 minutes. So if we have higher prices, lower quality and longer waiting times, what do they think will happen. No one goes to MCD because they value the brand.....

My opinion on all these franchisee restaurants is that they just got greedy and opened places everywhere! I used to live in AZ and our family lives in CO where In-N-Out is the best place ever! The company doesn’t want to become gigantic and is very careful where they open stores! The people who work there actually work - each has a job and does it well. The service, even when jammed inside and out goes very fast because people know their job and do that job! I’ve watched while waiting and the workers are very nice, helpful for those who may be new to their restaurant and thr while chain doesn’t try to make absolutely every single food item people might want! They do basically burgers, fries, drinks! And yes, I love their animal-style fries when we are out in CO (we live in NC). A big part of these chains is that they try to provide every food choice anyone wants, instead of sticking what they do best!

When fast food restaurants first opened up it was unheard of to have drive throughs. Anyone who drove up was more related to root beer stands. Customers actually walked inside the restaurant. Now they’re too lazy to get out of their cars. At least eating inside would have the ability for repeat orders instead of driving off with food in hand. Having two drive through lines means there’s only fourteen customers waiting. With the four registers they used to have there’d only four at each register meaning people are getting their orders taken faster with the same people fulfilling the orders. I reliably get my food quicker walking inside than waiting in a drive through. They even get the orders right except with customers who expect them to read their minds. Knowing what I know it’s better to close the drive through than the dining room. This applies at practically all restaurants.

The simple reality is this: restaurant chains are charging crazy prices while offering little in the way of service. Their portions have not increased, the quality of the food has not increased. They have done nothing to increase value commensurate with their increase in price. American consumers do not want to waste their money buying crap food for insane prices when they can spend 25% as much at the grocery store and get a far better meal. Some see this as a failure of our economic system. I see this as the result of corporate greed and the market deciding. There are people acting like this is a travesty and an example of the failure of our economic system. I call this the results of capitalism and the market deciding.
