Call Of Duty 3 on top of being an underrated entry In the series, did a good job of showcasing the Nebelwerfer’s use in the Normandy Campaign. Some sequences of the campaign really but the fear of god and screaming meenie In the player.

The most famous WW2 German truck was the Opel Blitz. Some of these trucks were converted into halftracks and nicknamed "Maultier" (mule) . Then some of these halftracks were converted into an armoured vehicle with a Nebelwerfer, still nicknamed "Maultier". So far the (simplified) history of this vehicle

The Guns of Normandy: A Soldier's Eye View, France 1944 by George Blackburn. Everything you ever wanted to know about the 25 pounder in combat. There is a chapter where Allied forces encountered a loaded and abandoned Nebelwerfer. It was turned around and after a number of high ranking officers came up to witness the event, fired. But it was a trap. The Germans, knew exactly where their Nebelwerfer had been left and replied with a massive counter barrage. Several high ranking officers and a number of others were killed. Excellent book. Recommended reading.

Interestingly enough, in most games and other media where the Katyusha rocket system is shown, the sound effect is in actuality the sound bite of the Nebelwerfer device. The Katyusha itself has a very notable use and sound itself. I would love a video by you souly dedicated to the Katyusha. I think it would make a grest follow up video to this one. I distinctly remember playing an early CoD in my early teens and the sound of the Katyusha rockets stuck with me, only to find out that the sound was in reality recordings of the Nebelwerfer. Despite the Katyusha having a very scary sound themselves. Sadly I have never seen a video about either until now, I am happy this channel is covering the Nebelwerfer at all.

I think it was the other way around. Nebelwerfer sound is replaced by katyusha. Afaik there is no surviving original sound of THE Nebelwerfer fireing. The videos you can find, are all other types or no sound has been recorded at all and they added ot later.
@John.McMillan
@John.McMillan Год назад
@@Napswhilewatchin It is entirely possible. Recordings of the time varied so widely that unless we directly see and hear both systems in reality we genuinely have no idea. But I've seen modern Katyusha's (not the same as WW2 ones) fire and it is not really that similar to popular recordings. But the very likely is down to different propellants, rockets themselves and the original recordings being from the 40's and 50's.

Great video and topic. Not a lot of WWII movies do you see the Nebelwerfer used in. I would like to see you do a video on the Russian Katyusha rocket system and with what movies it's shown in. It was used in a much more massive, effective, and psychological capacity than the Nebelwerfer had. Not to mention its mobile ability to shoot and scoot, was a literal nightmare for the Axis forces to repel against. Which is why the Germans also experimented with rocket launchers on halftracks known as "Himmler's Organs". Cheers!

I'm surprised you didn't mention the field modified Sd.Kfz. 251. Basically, they would take Nebelwefer rockets, in their wooden shipping crates, knock off the end of the crate at the front of the rocket, and strap 'em to the sides of a normal half-track and wire them to fire them from inside. They would do the same thing on the ground. Dig a little hole, insert shipping crate, wire for launch, use dirt from the hole to adjust elevation. So between the towed launchers, the self propelled launchers, the field modified half-tracks, and ground emplacements, they could throw a boatload of firepower very, very quickly.

Interesting Fact: On 6 Mar 1943, the 71st Werfer Regiment supported Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's disastrous tank attack on the Eighth Army at Medenine in Tunisia. Personally brought forwards by Oberstleutnant Count von Stauffenberg (who would at a later date be responsible for the notorious bomb plot Against Hitler), the regiment's three batteries were rapidly knocked out by British fighter-bombers.

just a notice: dont translate german noble titles and ranks like Graf, Freiherr etc into english, as the english "equivalent" often has different connotations and associated rights, powers and fiefs. One of those major misstranslations is Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, with Freiherr being his noble title and function. The english "translation" would be Baron, but the english Baron and the german Freiherr/Baron share different powers and rights and Freiherr is overlapping with the english Baron and the lower Baronet. The german Graf is often 1:1 translated as Count, but the proper would be Viscount, as Count/Earl is significantly higher ranking than the german Graf. The german equivalent to Earl/Count would be Fürst (the title of Otto von Bismark as example)

The back blast from the rockets was considerable; in every archive footage I've ever seen, the crews NEVER stayed by the weapon when it was firing. They instead stayed in a trench dug about 15 or 20 meters from the launcher. A soldier in the trench carried a firing box which was paid out on a long wire connected to the launcher. By cranking a handle on the firing box, an electric current was sent along the wire to each rocket...firing them one by one. But it was a bit too hazardous to stand or kneel next to the launcher when it was firing. Great video, though...filled with interesting info on this weapon.

Only the Germans would come up with a simple launch system and make an expensive and and complicated rocket to be used with it. Meanwhile the Soviets make the Katyusha rocket launcher which is a truck with rockets fired out of tubes. Which they are still using today. Though it is obviously what made it costly and complex to build, the idea of having the engine in the nose while the warhead is in the tail is a good one. Keeping the blast above ground will make it more effective against infantry and soft targets.and negates the reduction in destructive power if it hits soft ground.

*The main problem with the rockets was logistics.* The cost was 'worth it' because of how effective they were, but the fact that each rocket consumed a tremendous amount of fuel given the amount of explosives brought down on a target made the logistics of the entire system very large. THAT, and the fact that the rocket fuel was unstable...it was dangerous to transport and store in significant quantities. That being said...the rocket artillery was very successful because the launchers themselves could be lost without hurting the capabilities to much. And it was almost impossible to be copied and/or used against the Germans if captured.
