Only stockpile canned foods and dried foods. Stay away from freezer foods. If the electricity goes out, all your freezer food will spoil. You can get a portable generator. But it would be very aggravating. Also get a cook stove that runs off propane gas, and get one, or two 500 gallon propane tanks. Get a couple outside camping stoves that runs on propane. Some outside grills have a little burner for pots and frying pans. Natural gas lines could easily be disrupted. If you think it's ridiculous to do this much preparation, forget the whole thing. You can't survive only on a few cans of food, and a couple bottles of water.

Absolutely. We would have lost a freezer full of food last hurricane, except for our neighbor. He has a professional cooker and massive generator. He cooked and fed 5 households for over a week on our foods. Insurance does not cover lost food items.

We stay away from the pop-top canned foods. Had too many lid failures over the years. We don't even have an electric can opener. Just manual. My kids have been opening cans almost since they could reach the drawer. I've opened them with my knife hundreds of times at work or in the field. Most canned food is just a filler. Yes, some nutrition is inside. Multivitamins are helpful if you don't have access to fresh produce. Protein powder is a staple in our home. It's expensive these days, but whey protein has lots of health benefits. Stores for a long time too. We use oats to make meat loaf, salmon patties and home made granola. I used to put it in a container with cottage cheese, raisons, honey and cinnamon for work.

I agree, stay away from pop tops.one drop on the floor and the can can become compromised without knowing it.

I normally have a good stock of the items recommended. So I won't be rushing out to the supermarket to buy extras

Commercial peanut butter is loaded with hydrogenated fat and sugar. Tuna contaminated with heavy metal, overfished, and overpriced. Try herring, sardines, and anchovies instead.

White rice stores better than brown rice in the long run

Brown rice also has 1 1/2 times more arsenic. Japanese & Calif white rice have less

Agreed. I only buy SMALL amounts of Brown Rice.. and store it in the fridge. It goes rancid way too fast.

Funny, I went to the Red Cross website and didn't see these items recommended individually nor the requirement to stockpile immediately. . .

Great video, unfortunately quality scarcity and excessive pricing keep the lower end of the population able to survive in the end. I live in Ca. since the 50's, we had everything imaginable grown here. Now it's all shipped to other countries for higher prices. Agriculture here has turned into wineries. Guess we can all stay drunk.

The amount of money we have available for survival situations generally comes down to the CHOICES we have made BEFORE the emergency. If you buy a new $50,000 car, instead of a used 25,000 car common sense tells us you will have less money for beans & rice. People who do best in emergencies are generally those who made GOOD Financial CHOICES BEFORE the emergency.

Note: Brown Rice has a pretty short shelf life. For Emergency food supplies.. store White Rice.

The problem with dry beans is you have to have water.

Seriously? Because of global weather disasters (flooding, heat, and drought) people are already starving at disturbing rates. The war in Ukraine has created a major global "Grain" crisis. There is a global fertilizer shortage. Not to be a "doomsdayer: about it but...The stage is set for some long term rough times.. and the U.S. is NOT immune.

There is an interesting article somewhere which discusses the U.S. food chain distribution system. Delivery trucks are constantly moving major grocery store supplies from these HUGE Supply Houses... strategically placed around the country. Our country would have bare shelves within just a few days if this system shut down. One serious solar flare would be the end of us. No computers = no distribution.
