Thanks so much for doing what you're doing, you're a legend!! I have this exact laptop and am looking at upgrading the memory from the stock 16gb kit. Is the memory in your description link the dual-rank kit that was performing highest on average and kept the 3200 frequency without xmp? is there a link to the same in a 32gb kit? Absolutely love the channel!
I have legion 5iP intel version i7 11800h rtx 3070 32GB RAM. I'd love to know if 64gb DC will work too, perhaps new video same topic but with intel config. Ty.
Amazing video!, still can't believe they did not test the 16GB 2Rx8 + 16GB 2Rx8 option, I believe is the most reasonable upgrade path for the dual channel 16GB with slow memory.
Jarrod, I want to say that "I can't thank you enough." I know this was an immense amount of work. It would be increasingly invaluable to release the full Zen Timings screen grab for each kit listed. There is *a little* amount of info out there as to what bits of the timings matter the most. However, you've just done the most comprehensive testing on this topic bar none. Rounding that out would be providing the said screen grabs. Let me know if you want any kickback for this cause I don't mind doing so, of which I'm on a discord server you're in. All in all, still: Thank you for this testing. I know it took you a fair amount of time to do this work, thank you.
All of this information was collected but not included in the video, I've uploaded the results here for you: jarrods.tech/ultimate-ram-comparison-zentimings-results/
Maaan Jarred your content literally answers questions I didn’t know to ask AND always comes right in time for my purchase choices! Thanks for the continued great work!
Wow, Jarrod, after this detailed and incredible valuable comparison, you've cleared all the questions regarding RAM configurations. No more "experiments", "guessing's", or forum research. RAM has an huge impact and now we know EXACTLY what to install and what to expect thanks to you (and your partner). Nobody has this simple and brilliant ideas, keep going!
For those who wanna get a 32GB memory configuration: I bought 2 sticks of 16GB Kingston 2Rx8, 3200Mhz, CL20, code "KF432S20IB1/16" for my Legion 5 Pro (Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3060), did no gaming benchmarks, but my AIDA64 speeds were: - Read: 46151 MB/s - Write: 45694 MB/s - Copy: 43409MB/s - Latency: 78.1 ns This is in line with the top 1-2 results from Jared, so I'm expecting peak performance in gaming with this kit.
Hi mate,I just bought Legion 7 with 16gb memory today and would like to replace my default RAM with a Faster one Can I use the same memory stick you mentioned above for better performance as honestly Legion 5 Pro and Legion 7 is almost same under the hood except Legion 7 got better thermals and fancy RGB lights 😊
@@niharshiplu If, like my laptop, your Legion 7 came with two 8GB Sk-Hynx 1Rx16 sticks, it should run better, yeah. If, however, it's 1Rx8 or 2Rx8, and you get high read/write speeds in Aida64, I'd personally not bother with an upgrade.
Hey man, it is great to see you grow over time like this. I have been watching you since you have 2 digits subscribers for my first laptop purchase and subscribed since due to the quality of research in each video. Now, after 3 years, I am here watching one of the most reliable, trust worthy RU-vid laptop reviewers. Hopefully you remember me fam.
@@JarrodsTech not quite, I just literally upgraded to the ROG G14 last Black Friday (yes, the one with onboard 8GB of ram), given by my girlfriend replacing the G7. But thanks for the advice with the G7 7577, I enjoyed the last 3 years with it, just some thermal issues, and the rest is great. Looking forward to more of your videos, apprecieate your work, and also don't forget me when you get your rewards haha.
Second ever mention of the partner(for all I know)! Awesome content that is becoming more and more relevant as CPU power increases and games utilize more of the CPU. This clears up a lot of fragments of common knowledge by backing it up with so much data. Love the content, keep it up!
Outstanding content! Literally the best channel to learn about laptop tech. Never thought these small details actually can have such an impact on performance. And, of course, you’ve got to appreciate all those melodic death metal bands t-shirts. Thank you, Jarrod, you rock!
15:12 Summary in order of importance: 1- go for the same specs for each stick to have dual channel mode 2- lower timing 3- x8 bank instead of x16 4- dual rank instead of single rank
I know other people have already said it but your work deserves so much praise, even if it's repetitive. I cannot thank you enough! I've built multiple desktop PCs for friends and family but I hadn't touched laptops for long long time. Then my best friends macbook died and he wanted to join the PCMR with his new laptop and, at the same time, I started a new job and they told me I could pick my own laptop. I spent days filing through videos on your channel to do my research and wow. You were truly a one-stop-shop for every little question and detail I wanted to know about brands, models, and detailed specs like this. Seriously, Jarrod, you've helped me and my network of people make confident and long-lasting decisions for our work and gaming laptops. Thanks so so much!
hi jarrod. wanted say that ive finally purchased legion 5 2021 based on your reviews and it runs great with windows 11. i can't thank you enough.thank you for your in depth videos and care you have for the laptop gaming community.wish you the best and keep the great videos coming :)
those ram combinations and rank differences were a question in my head, thanks to jarrod now i know what is good and bad thank you as always legion daddy
As soon as I read the title on my ytb feed I knew you'd be doing it on the LENOVO LEGION 5 RTX 3060, I BOUGHT THIS LAPTOP BECAUSE OF YOUR REVIEW AND I'M SUPER HAPPY WITH IT
I have always been a desktop guy. Ever since I found this channel, I have purchased a Maingear Vector pro with an 11800h and RTX 3080 and absolutely love it. Keep up the great content!!
Same. I've purchased two different laptops (one for home/travel and one for work) based off of Jared's reviews and I am pleased with my decisions given I had good information before buying.
Thank you very much for this very informative video. I had no idea about the ranks or the x8 and x16 stuff. Thank you also for the other videos that you made. Those helped me a lot on how to decide to get a new laptop nowadays.
I had 16Gb (2x8Gb) 1Rx16 Samsung 3200Mhz, CL22 installed by default. I installed 32Gb (2x16Gb) 1Rx8 Kingston 3200Mhz, CL22 (exact model: kvr32s22s8/16). I have tested RAM speed in Aida64. RAM read speed changed from 43 000 to 47 000 (by 4 000). RAM write speed changed from 35 000 to 45 000 (by 10 000 !). I haven't tested FPS in games, because I need it for graphics programs, but the speed increase is high and the only difference is 16x to 8x RAM. It absolutely corresponds to the test in this video. Thank you, Jarrod.
Jarrod please do this with DDR5 once you are able to. This is so extremely helpful, and will be even more helpful with the DDR5 data. Thank you again for such a great video you're a boss.
Being a subscriber from the very beginnings I must say that man you are a mind reader! every niche and valuable video laptops related if find it on your channel ! BIG thumbs up Jarrod for the hard work ! You deserve all the subs and much more!
Very very useful info. Finally someone showed us what happens when mixing ram configs and we have interesting results with some games being highly affected and some not so much. Do consider the same test for an Intel laptop
It has been a while that i am following your videos and i can say that no one is providing detailed informations as you do with simple words. I can easily say that it is so much work to do the comparaison that you have just did. Continue your hard work, it will certainly pay back one day. A follower from 🇨🇦
first of all: Awesome video, I like these kinds tests. And I was surprised by how much difference there is even between relatively similar ram kits. Thats why I have to ask: Did you check that all kits actually default to the same JEDEC timings?
Which ram are you going with ? I feel like this video somewhat contradicted previous much talked about findings over the last 5 months of ‘single rank v dual rank’ with some single rank being faster than dual rank ? 🤷🏻♂️
Huge amount of work - well done Jarrod and partners :-)! Respect to both of you! As comments says your channel = invaluable wealth of knowledge for gaming laptop enthusiasts!
Excellent timing! I was just thinking about upgrading the memory in my 4 year old Lenovo legion 5. Now I have all the info I need to make an informed decision.
Jarrod, extremely helpful! Just grabbed a Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSD for load speeds (FAST!) and looking at RAM now. There are so many complexities with picking the correct RAM especially with XMP playing a factor.. Many vendors simply do not list it and you have to be careful in what you're buying or you won't get the advertised speeds, especially on the AMD Ryzen laptops like the Legion. Looking at the Kingston Fury Impact 32GB kit with 3200MHz and 20 CAS latency as a possibility myself. Cheers!
My go to guy for smart comparisons. Very indepth and clear explanation and comparisons. Much appreciated ! Those 10-20% overall gains (subjective to usage circumstances) are what you would expect jumping from say a rtx 3070 to 3080. Why bother when you can get almost similar gains by smaller smarter upgrades in ram and cooling, instead of the more expensive GPUs.
Yeah you could potentially somewhat upgrade a 3060 laptop to a low wattage 3070 laptop with stock crappy ram levels, for about 100 dollars instead of paying at least a 250/300 premium. Although the 6gb of VRAM will be a bigger unavoidable bottleneck in 2/3 years.
The king of Ryzen laptop RAM right now is a Kingston kit. Specifically KF432S20IB1K2/32. It's a 2RX8 dual channel 32 GB kit. It has a JEDEC profile that runs at CL20. I saw a 41% increase in write on Aida 64 coming from a stock x16 3200 mhz Samsung kit.
Wish I knew about it before making the video, could have included it, granted buying more RAM is kind of cost prohibitive when you've got so many configurations. I was lucky to borrow as much as I could.
Jarrod I love you're videos but this should be re run on an Intel system that has xmp like the msi gp66. I Enabled xmp and ran a 32gb 3200 cl16 kit and saw a nice performance increase measurable on benchmarks and in games. I think most people strive for 3200 cl16.
I wish more manufacturers added an XMP setting in the bios. Out of all the various AMD and Intel powered laptops I've either owned or used. I've never once seen one with XMP settings in the bios. I know there are a few but it seems to be extremely rare unfortunately.
I just found this page a few days ago, as I started to look for options for a new gaming laptop, bu man the level of details and depth are another world on your channel... and priceless to see that this testing and Linus' explanation video about the .Rx8 vs .Rx16 meaning and double down on your results made a manufacturer to actually refer to your testings (even called you by your names) and tried hard to explain why this is not what it looks like .... it's just a shift in the industry standards... omg :D:D:D congrats to that! thanks for your great work, keep it up! :)
@@assasins353 by quite a lot. Not that I used the original sticks long, but the performance when I play the first section of the witcher 3 is significant, like ~+20fps from 70-80 to ~100, max settings, on 1600p resolution
@@assasins353 as soon as I receive my laptop, I promptly ordered the new sticks and they arrived in few days, I didn't really 'test', just play & use msi afterburner monitoring stuffs.
It’s interesting that the 8+8 dual rank dual channel ram sticks is performing basically the best. Why is it that higher memory may perform worse in other games? When you have more memory, does the system assign more memory to a programme since it’s not lacking memory at all? I clearly don’t know enough about ram
Sub timings. Higher capacity leads to looser sub timings, but it's negligible in terms of performance. Nothing to worry about as long as you run 2 sticks to max out the bandwidth, you're good to go.
Wow Jarrod Tech just took laptop reviews to a whole'nother level that I didn't even know existed. Just WOW. These results should be published in a tech journal, seriously.
Man… getting the legion 5 was the best. Jarrod has so many reviews and upgrade videos on it! Shame it only has a 1650ti and 8gb ram but i have my desktop for heavier gaming/creation tasks. My main issue is the lack of availability of the same ram stick as the one in mine :(
Looks like I dodged a bullet, at the time when I buy my laptop I had the option to either buy a 8GB for 12GB flex mode as tested here, or 4+4=8GB, the shop clerk recommend me to get another 4GB for compatibility, I decided to believe in Intel once and picked up an 8GB stick, no problem for 3 years.
Some actual RAM brands/ specific kits would have been helpful. I bought the kingston fury impact 32gb 260-pin ddr4 so-dimm ddr4 3200 set for my 17inch legion 5, is that a good kit ?
@@JarrodsTech but I heard 3200 of Zeus ram actual run at 2666mhz it that true so which should I buy Kingston fury 16gb of 2 stick cl20 ddr4 3200 or Zeus 16gb of 2 stick 3200 which is best performance for gaming... Plz reply
People in the Legion discord keep asking for XMP support, but there really hasn't been any statement yet from Lenovo if they are working on a bios update to enable it. What Lenovo did say is that they are very close to releasing fan speed control as part of the Vantage software and from the screen shots there will be rgb style graphics meaning a 10-15% fps and performance boost!
Hopefully this silences the ram elitists a bit, lol. Honestly it gets even more complicated than this though. Because 1440p is typically more GPU-bound, ram swapping seems to grant even smaller gains, if any.
Yeah there's a LOT more you could go into, but after 3 weeks of full time hours worth of work (15 days testing, 5 days per week) you've got to call it at some point!
@@JarrodsTech Agreed! Ram can get so insanely complex 😅 seriously appreciate your work though. Even a more simple video can take forever to create so props to you for putting in the work!
Even at 1440p, there are still games that benefit from having better RAM like racing sims and fast-paced shooters to name a few. Having faster RAM will also affect your 1% lows which highly affects how smooth or stuttery your gameplay would be. It isn't all about avg. framerates all the time.
@@coolerdan446 I mean sure, but say you have 16gb of 1rx8 ram and you spend $200 or so on 32gb of 2rx8 ram. Is it really worth all that for possibly a small amount of 1% low improvement in some games? I guess if you’re a big time performance chaser then sure, but to me that doesn’t really make sense.
@@JoshCravesTech It just really depends on the games you play. I wouldn't really recommend it if you play mostly open-world or single player type games. But if you play very competitively like the type of games I mentioned previously and need the smoothest, most responsive, and least stuttery gameplay, then you'll need that upgrade. You can actually get a Crucial Dual-Rank 32GB for around $144 on Amazon. Then you can sell your 16GB stock in the used market for about $80-$90. Then your total upgrade only costs $50-$60.
Sadly, there wasn't any Dual-Rank 32GB kits in this video. There is actually a noticeable improvement from the Single-Rank 32GB. Enough that it would be scoring at the top or even top two.
Yeah I upgraded to 64GB but seem to have slightly worse latency using a few different benchmarking tools. I assumed it was a minor consequence of having such a large amount of memory, but I can see the equivalent best performing 16GB also has the highest latency...
We the people who simply cannot afford/time to do this things are grateful to your work. Indeed a simply RAM can affect your gaming laptop performance. Thank you.
Really great video as usual. Question/Suggestion: Have you ever considered to show the standard deviation in your average plots? This would be some good additional information. You could display the stdv over the average in the same way you display 1%-lows for fps.
I would love it if you started including Forza in your tests. Really, doing both Horizon 4 and 5, would be great. My OMEN 15 (10750H, 3070, 32gb 2933 cl17 2Rx8) runs Horizon 4 cranked fully at around 130-150 fps, yet FH5 I have on Ultra Textures but high for everything else, and I can get 100fps. Yet, I have it capped at 75 to reduce studder in dense areas. But I just feel those games would help many more people gauge their purchase options. They are 2 of the most popular games on Xbox Game Pass, in the US anyway. I am interested in getting something a bit better myself and I'd love those to compare. I would really like this same laptop, but with a 11800h and 130 watt 3070. I have a 300hz screen and haven't found one with the 11th gen yet. The OMEN desktops...... I would not recommend those. Update! I found the 11800h with the 300hz screen!!! Finally! too bad its still a 100watt GPU...
This is the reason to avoid Asus and Dell/Alienware’s most laptops due to their embedded memory practices not only harm your future upgradability, but also they choose the lowest components: 1Rx16 to embedded, totally irresponsible.
This is definitely the best channel for hardware and becnhmark nerds like me, specially for laptops. Great work! Always answering the questions that matters
The undisputed "Laptop King". Jarrod is a man on a mission. "What mission"? you may ask. A mission to inform every one of us on all of the things to take into consideration when purchasing a gaming/creator laptop and how to get the most out of it without spending unnecessary money. Jarrod, you are the man. Hands down the most informative and enjoyable videos in the laptop/gaming space. I eagerly look on RU-vid everyday to see if you've dropped a new video. I already purchased 2 laptops this year, and your videos have helped me out immensely in making my decisions (Legion 5i Pro RTX 3060 & Legion 7i RTX 3070). Kudos to you and keep the content coming. I'm hooked 🍿
I have been watching your channel alittle for a year now and am always blown away with the amount of work you put in with these. The closet channel I know that sometimes do this is Linus Tech Tips (following for over 12 years now) and they have a large team. Bravo to you mate, thank you for this.
