Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing PLOT HOLES. It shouldn’t come as any sort of a surprise that, even within the captivating wizarding universe, astute readers and viewers have stumbled upon perplexing plot holes. And these gaps in the narrative, where certain details seem to defy logic or leave unanswered questions, have sparked lively debates among Harry Potter enthusiasts.
Today we’ll embark on a quest to dissect some of the most intriguing plot holes that have left fans scratching their heads. Diving in to these mysteries, examining the inconsistencies and seeking to find plausible explanations or theories that help to reconcile these discrepancies. A few of the more common ‘plot holes’ identified by fans actually have simpler explanations than you may think.
Anyway, I won’t dawdle any longer, let’s dive in to it.

With the map, I've always thought if it could insult Snape it could also teach how to use it. It felt as if the Twins were mischievous enough to entrust itself to. And since the Twins give it to Harry, they're basically entrusting it to another mischievous person and that's why it works for Harry.

1: tbh i believe that due to voldemort strong believe that hes best legilamence he didnt went for unbreakable vows with his deatheaters. or tho you could say he used it or at least similiar thing on peter by giving him hand after all when peter betrayed him, he got killed by the hand 3: because you also have charm colloportus which closes the doors and im preaty sure that depending on the power of the caster of this charm it can protect from alohomora if caster of alohomora is weaker tha caster of colloportus (i imagine it as 2 forces acting on eachother depending on which is stronger the one wins) 4. it was said that magic creates some sort of force field of disturbance that makes mugole devices not work properly but it might just be that simple devices could still work. for example colin camera is the old type that uses film and doesnt have any electronics in it thus it works but if he had digital camera it would not work similar even that comes to mind are solar flair activity or emp 5. map has some sort of awareness. when snape tries to read it it not only knows its snape but it also knows how marauders would react to snape trying to read map. its possible that fred and george tried same spell on map that snape did but cause their agenda was to cause mischief without bringing real harm to anyone i believe that map would either directly tell them the password or lead them to finding it by series of questions 6. trace was always effective. but harry got warning only in 2nd and 5th year cause ministry to their best knowledge knew that at the time of harry using spell he was only wizard in area. all they had to do was inform ministry that wizards would be in little winging and ministry would have ignored the trace alert assuming that it was that wizard that casted the spell not harry same as underage true born wizards could easily cast spells all time and not get warnings cause its their parents who would be assigned the spell cast 7. harry didnt know he had a mirror untill after sirius death. sirius gave him package and told him to open it later when he will be alone. harry put it in his trunk and than forgot about it. only during packing after 5th year ended he found the package, opened it and realized that he had that means of communication. harry didnt forget about mirror itself but about the gift. additionally harry didnt acted on his fear alone but alson on the lie of kreacher who he talked to by using umbridge fire place 8. hohoho now you done it. students with minimal training? there is at best one student in many generations at hogwarts smart enough to be able to brew polyjuice potion. in the entire series i doubt anyone but hermione could have done it counting students only. and there are ingredients that are. also there are ways to counter the pollyjuice potion but most important its impractical cause you have to use it every hour. anyway it is posible for sirius to get it and use it but its simpler to just use other order members that dont have to use it 11. portkeys can but doesnt have to have set specific time of departure. the cup was actually double portkey. firstly it was enchanted to teleport winner to the start of the maze after he touches it. after that additional enchantment was put by barty to teleport harry to the cemetary after he wins taking priority over first enchantment but not removing it. thats why harry was able to return to hogwarts using it cause otherwise portkeys are one way teleporters but barty did not remove the original enchantment cause voldemort plan was to send harry body back after he kills him so people think harry died in maze and so voldemort can regain his strenght and army in secret before he is strong enough to take over the ministry and dumbledore 12. its because veritaserum like legilamance can be fought and broken additionally its very complex potion. additionally serum would not be used on people like black cause he was not prosecuted but instead send immediately to azkaban without a trial 13. sirius blamed himself for lili and james death. ha had no reason to live and basically was punishing himself untill he realized that peter is still alive 14. you literally explained how its not a plothole at all :D overall pretty shitty video but i was bored so i watched it to point out your mistakes

For Sirius not escaping Azkaban sooner, if I recall correctly, Sirius never even thought of escaping until he saw Peter in the Weaselys' picture; he used his dog form to stay sane and not lose his mind to the dementors, but didn't even think of the possibility of escaping until he saw the picture and realized he had failed to kill Peter, so the desire to escape kind of came as a realization that he hadn't yet finished what he originally set out to do (which was to kill Peter in revenge for betraying the Potters)

My theory regarding Harry and the Dementors, is that he is a horcrux. He's not just getting his own worst memory, but Voldemort's, as they would likely be the exact same moments. The death of Lily, followed in seconds by the destruction of Voldemort's body. So he has two souls being affected by the Dementors, and gets a sort of feedback from it, like holding a microphone in front of the speaker its connected to.
@idminister
@idminister 6 месяцев назад
indeed, because if his memeory was good enough for that to be his worst memory for dementor, then he shouldve seen thestrals from the beginning but if its actually the memory from voldermort shard that dementor is actively pulling and it is also affecting him as a side effect, than the passive death cloak of the thestral would hold unless harry had tried to channel power using morty shard (not that he would have cause to)

@idminister to be fair some do have memory like that. I described my room from our home when I was 2 years old to my mom 10+ years later, having lived in a different place for most of that time. And that wasn't a traumatic memory, just the layout of it.

Yeah, the book said Sirius was upstairs tending to Buckbeak when Harry "called" so he had no idea, and Kreature took advantage of this to deceive him. If he went there bodily to search for him, he would have left his friends behind at the mercy of Umbridge. It's also entirely possible he couldn't. There might have magical safeguards preventing full-body floo travel to and from the castle, while still allowing for partial use for communication. It would have been a similar line of protection and reasoning as the apparition block. Keep the kids in and bad elements out.

If harry would have gone all the way through the fire to Grimald's place, he would never have gotten caught by Umbridge. He also could have looked through the house to make sure Sirius wasn't there. There is also the problem of a house under the fidalious charm being connected to the flu network in the first place.

The camera one is fairly easy to explain, it isn't that any muggle technology doesn't work but only electronic devices that don't work at Hogwards (like electronic bugs or walkie-talkies as examples from the series). Harry Potter was based in the 90s, back then cameras were mechanical and chemical which means that they would mostly be unaffected, the flash is the part that may not work as they have been electric for some time. It wasn't until the mid 2000s that digital cameras became the norm and those would not work at around Hogwarts.

@@whiplashfatigue1430 the way the Collin says when taking the picture of Harry and Prof. Lockhart it is a magic potion used to develop the photos is where the magic comes from. To me it reads as the Collin's camera is a muggle one and Collin is delighted that his normal camera can make moving pictures. I will admit that it is true that books and movies don't say either way and Collin's parents could have bought him a magic camera as a present but I would doubt that. I suspect that you are right with the Daily Prophet photographer's camera is probably magic as wizzards have a bad habbit of making muggle stuff magical despite it being illegal brooms and trains for example :)
@mikenash7049
@mikenash7049 6 месяцев назад
The flash on Colin's camera looks like a powder-based flash, such as they used when taking school photographs at my primary school in the 1960s, so that wouldn't have been affected by the magical field at Hogwarts either.
@idminister
@idminister 6 месяцев назад
the hogwarts express and the weasley car are both mechanical systems and enchanted with magic using trends within a work to analyze other aspects of the work: the camera was a muggle origin camera, enchanted by magic lore wise: why? because it is probably the lazy way to make magic moving pictures compared to the pure magic way; and people muggle or mage possess laziness

I doubt the map had a true password. Rather F&G struck up a conversation with the map until eventually pledging their mischievousness to it, which was good enough for its Marauder authors. I think Sirius stayed in Azkaban because despite being innocent, he still blamed himself to some degree. Remember, he was originally going to be the Potter's secret keeper but convinced them to change the plan and make Peter Pettigrew the secret keeper, instead. It's possible that he felt some responsibility for what happened and so stayed in Azkaban as a way of punishing himself for that mistake.

In my view, the most glaring plothole of the series is the Seven Potters ploy to remove Harry from Privet Drive. There is a loosely related plothole about Hermione, but they corrected hers in the movie. There’s another explanation for Voldemort not using unbreakable vows: he can’t make an example out of somebody who drops dead. When people turned on him he made a point of torturing them and everyone around them, either directly or though his followers. So where Ron would appear on the map as a set of human footprints with “Ronald Weasley” next to it, Peter was showing up as a tiny set of rat footprints with no name tag (and “Wormtail” was next to the names “Mooney”, “Prongs”, and “Padfoot” on the cover). So the Marauders would know to keep an eye out for mysterious unnamed footprints that might not always be human, but no one else would even know about that quirk.

Have you read Order of the Phoenix? In the Summer before Harry’s fifth year, Sirius gave Harry a gift. Sirius told Harry to use this when he needs him. So Harry put the gift with the rest of his stuff and forgot about it. Over the course of the school year when Harry needed to contact Sirius, he wrote him letters or used a fireplace to speak to him through the flu network. When Harry has the vision, he snuck into Umbridge’s office to use her unmonitored fireplace to check if Sirius was at home. Kreature answered and lied to Harry and said Sirius was not there. Then all of the stuff at the ministry happened and Sirius died. When Harry was putting his stuff back together at the end of the school year, he found the gift. He opened it and it was the two way mirror. The communication method was not “established earlier in the series”. Harry didn’t even know it existed. Yes he had the method but he didn’t know because he never opened the gift. But during all the times Harry and Sirius communicated in other methods during Harry’s fifth year, Sirius should have told Harry to open the gift and use the mirror.

I think for the unbreakable vow it mostly comes down to specifics. Voldemort has a pretty huge following, so he would have to make allot of vows for each individual mission and make them specific. The one about the Marauders Map always bugged me too. While more of a post hoc rationalization, I think the answer lies with Snape. We can see that that map has the ability to detect things about the one attempting to use it. When Snape tried, it referred to him as "Professor Snape", which he wasn't when the map was created. It also seemed to know enough to insult him accurately. Perhaps the map could discern that Fred and George were mischief makers and revealed it's own password to them.
@TheLethalDiva
@TheLethalDiva 5 месяцев назад
n the "Harry Potter" books, it is explained that the Marauders' Map only reveals the names of those whom the creators of the map knew personally. Since Peter Pettigrew was believed to be dead for many years and was living in his Animagus form as Scabbers, he was not recognized by Harry or the map.

@@TheLethalDiva - My comment wasn't about Pettigrew (who did appear on the map when it was plot-relevant for him to in Year 3). It was about the twins ability to use the map without instructions when they stole it from Filch. 1 - Voldemort's ego seems to be the de facto reason for why he keeps screwing up, so it's a perfectly reasonable explanation 2 - A good theory is that the Marauders are visible only to themselves on the map, which tracks with their behavior. And while Harry does see Peter this is only a thing in the movie, so not really a plot hole in the book and, in any case, him being the son of one of the Marauders might let him see them too. 3 - Are we sure Alohomora is taught to first year students? Hermione knows the spell, but she's known precisely for being able to master advanced magic. 4 - Cameras are a thing in the wizarding world. Wizards take pictures all the time. How is this a plot hole? Muggle technology isn't useless in Hogwarts, _electronics_ are, and Colin is using and old film camera, not a digital one. While a camera's flashbulb requires an electrical contact to work it doesn't use any complicated circuitry. 5 - A popular theory for this is that the Marauders specifically planted the map in Filch's office as a way to let a new generation of troublemakers make good use of it. The map was likely enchanted to hint about its use to those who were willing to use it for mischief, kinda like how Dumbledore enchanted the mirror of Erised to read into the looker's intentions. 6 - The trace isn't really inconsistent, it's just extraordinarily ineffective for its main purpose, but otherwise it works as intended. Sure, we're not told about any effects when members of the Order use it, but it's very likely they could just have alerted the Ministry that they were going to move Harry out of the premises. While they weren't getting along at the time, it would have made sense to do so precisely to avoid more trouble for Harry, since he was already put in trial. Same when Arthur visited the Dursleys in the previous year. Since he had already connected their fireplace to the Floo network it's clear they knew he'd be the one doing magic there. 7 - Absolutely not a plot hole. The book makes it very clear that Harry simply forgot the mirror existed and he was the only one besides Sirius to know it existed. Hell, Harry had never even used the mirror before, so he had no reason to think of it. 8 - Only really a plot hole in the movie, and the entire Fantastic Beasts trilogy is full of them, so I don't know if we should really take them into account. 9 - OK, again with the "students with minimal training" thing. It's Hermione. It's always Hermione who does these things. Her entire shtick is that she's exceptionally adept to magic, able to master spells that much more advanced students or even adults cannot manage. You gotta stop pretending that just because she does something it means it's easy. But even then, how is Sirius gonna be making the potion? It needs hard to find ingredients (and being a dog isn't gonna be much help finding them) and has to be cooked for like a month. Considering that no one else wants him to leave the place and he has a domestic elf trashing the place all the time I don't see this as a viable option. 10 - But... w-why? You have literally the explanation for why this is not a plot hole right there, why even include this on the list? 11 - It's never established that Neville was present when his parents were tortured. Harry was there when his parents were killed. While he didn't _see_ them die he did hear their voices (and Voldemort's) which generated repressed memories his younger self couldn't understand but were still on the back of his mind once he was grown enough to understand the events. 12 - Is it really so hard to understand that portkeys can be created to work at a specific time for convenience reasons but that doesn't mean it's the only way they can work? It's obvious the Triwizard cup was set to be used when touched and not at a particular time frame. You can claim this is a mystery (even though no, it isn't), but calling it a plot hole is pushing it. 13 - This is probably the only actual plot hole in the whole list. While I could come up with a reasonable explanation there's nothing in the story to back it up. Snape's only words about it is that its use is watched by the Ministry, but doesn't say anything about it being hard to make or possible to resist. Like, you could make the case that powerful wizards can resist it (sort of like with the Imperius curse) and it only worked on Crouch because he was completely unprepared for it (he wasn't even conscious when forced to drink it in the book) but, again, nothing in the books even hints to it. 14 - Again, literally explained in the book. Not a plot hole. 15 - Jesus. OK, first, we're introduced to Cho in Prisoner of Azkaban, not Goblet of Fire. She only becomes more prominent in the latter. Second, you literally make the point that there's a different explanation for this in the book and the movie. You have _two_ explanations for it, why would you even call this a plot hole? This is killing me. As much as I like the Harry Potter series, I know these books are full to the brim of plot holes, yet you make a list comprised nearly entirely of nitpicks or perfectly explained story bits.

In Half-Blood Prince, when Harry asked Dumbledore how 16-year-old Tom Riddle got away with murder (when they watched the memory of him meeting his uncle, who he framed for the murders), Dumbledore told him the Trace is a myth that the Ministry spreads around. The Ministry only monitors the homes of underage witches and wizards with no magical relatives (which means they only persecute muggle-borns mostly). I don't know how Harry forgot that in the next book. I figured that on the days that Adults were coming to pick Harry up, they informed the Ministry of this, so they temporarily turned off the monitoring spells on his house. The pargement started insulting Snape on its own. So my theory is that, while planning their next pranks, one of the twins had his wand on the map. While talking about their misdeeds, the Map decided to teach the young troublemakers the chant. As if it acknowledged the twins as sort of new generation of marauders. I feel like portkeys can be put on a timer or set to go as soon as someone touches them. Touch ones last until the spell wears off (like hats fred and george make) or until the wizard who cast the spell is dead, or someone touches it of course. The most confusing thing about them to me is why the one Harry and Cedric take to the graveyard takes them back to the clearing. As far as I know, it's the only portkey we see travel more than once. It doesn't go back to the original place either. Pretty sure SuperCarlinBrothers think Barty Crouch Jr. must've set it up to go to the graveyard, where Voldemort would kill Harry and send a death eater back in his place as Triwizard winner so Dumbledore wouldn't be suspicious. Maybe the portkey had already been set to go to the clearing when Crouch Jr. got a hold of it. Then, he enchanted it again, leaving the first one in a queue of sorts and it wasn't going to be used. Voldemort would've felt invincible if he killed Harry and stopped the prophecy, idk if he would've cared about convincing Dumbledore he's not back.

Dumbledore had set the cup to bring the victor out of the maze to the clearing. Barty Crouch Jr, disguised as Mad-Eye Moody, volunteered to place the cup in the maze so that he could tinker with the Portkey spell on the cup to take the victor to the graveyard first. I believe that Voldemort was likely planning on using the cup to make a triumphant return in his new body after killing Harry. It's also possible that he could have had some Polyjuice potion ready and waiting so that he, or one of his Death Eaters, could go to Hogwarts disguised as Harry for whatever reason, but I don't think that fits Voldemort's style.

@Flamefox20
@Flamefox20 6 месяцев назад
Quick google search. When a young witch or wizard suppressed their innate magic, either through will power or as a result of violence or abuse, a powerful parasite could form within that child - a dark energy called an Obscurus. Harry never suppressed his magical powers. For teleporting. First off, wizards don't want Muggles to know about their world, so they won't just randomly teleport everywhere cause that would risk giving the world away. Cause ya know people don't just randomly appear. If we're specifically talking about apparition, it's not so much a simple spell. You actually have to take a test to be allowed to use it. And again googled it and it says range is limited and the further you try to travel the harder and more risky it is. I'm sure there are ways magically to prolong one's life especially for really powerful wizards. So it could probably be your average human life span to longer. Genetics. I'm sure as long as there was a wizard/witch somewhere along the line, there is the chance that someone could be born with magic. Even if we look at humans, people can be born with genes for certain defects and diseases that are passed from generation to generation, but it doesn't always manifest in the person. They are just a carrier of it. Something could happen with whatever makes magic happen in a person.

In the case of Peter Pettigrew, there are three possibilities. Fred and George would most likely have investigated, but because they were unaware of the fact that Scabbers and Peter were one in the same, they probably would think that; 1) the map was pranking them. It is a map all about being a troublemaker, so giving false alarms isnt outside the realm of possibility 2)a more logical conclusion thst the map isnt perfect and has limitations; take the fact that anyone using the Room of Requirement falls off the radar, such as Draco Malfoy. 3) Occam's Razor; Scabbers could have had a name recognized by the map. Sirius did not show Harry what it was, just vaguely described it as a way to let him know if Snape is giving him a hard time, in which case Harry said he wouldn’t use it because he didn’t want Sirius risking his life to fight with Snape. He ultimately forgets about it as a lot of teenagers would forget about gifts they didn’t intend on using. This makes the whole end of the book that more tragic that Harry had such a simple and effective way of checking to make sure Sirius was ok. I’m not sure about anyone else but the first time I read the book I also forgot Sirius gave Harry a method of communication so I felt the moment of tragic irony with Harry

@@augoosto11 Well the exact line of the book is “Use it if you need me, it’s a way of letting me know if Snapes giving you a hard time”. It was a very poor explanation. I’m also pointing out that it would be normal for 15 year old to forget about a gift that he pre determined he’d never open. Also, after Sirius gives Harry the mirror, Harry sneaks into Umbridges office to use her fire. You’d think the first thing Sirius would say is “Harry, why didn’t you use the mirror?”

Remember that Tom Riddle was an orphan. Even though a spell could be familiar, the Unbreakable Vow also involves a unique incentive, which is the genuine loyalty involved in even considering the spell to begin with. Tom never understood or experienced any form of loyalty in his entire life. It does otherwise still make sense that he would know better than to make the Unbreakable Vow because it works both ways and Voldemort is only ever duplicitous and could never keep a vow, therefore it would be too dangerous for himself. For the same motivation of killing to make multiple Horcruxes, those were insurance. The Unbreakable Vow would take away the insurance and create an even greater risk.

The Trace's inconsistency plot hole is actually quite easily explained. The trace really only applied to underage wizards as far as I'm aware (therefore meaning members of the order were able to use magic), and was only triggered when it was known that a muggle was aware of the magic - hence Harry was able to use 'lumos' in the 3rd book/movie, and Dobby was able to drop the cake because only Vernon and Petunia were aware of the magic, but they already knew of the magical world - but when Dudley saw harry use the patronus charm that was a different matter as he wasn't aware of Harry being a wizard. We have to remember that the entire muggle world is constantly entangled with the wizarding world so there aren't clear cut muggle or Wizarding locations, the trace charm presumably functioned off of whether or not a Muggle had genuine suspicions of witch-craft.

One of the biggest plot holes is how do teachers like McGonagall, Flitwick and Snape have time to teach their subject and be head of house? If they have 7 years with 4 houses(who often pair up for classes) they would teach 14 separate classes multiple times a week. Some classes are extra long, like double potions. Good job breaking some of these down for us! Thanks! *** SPOILERS BELOW *** My thoughts below : The Unbreakable Vow - Voldemort believed himself superior to all others. He was also a Legilimens & believed that no one could deceive him. That makes it plausible to me that he would not have considered having his Death Eaters swear unbreakable vows to him. The muggle camera - Their have been moving wizard photos in the Daily Prophet, Harry's family photo album, etc. The flying car was enchanted & still worked in Hogwarts boundaries as well. I believe that Colin mentioned that the photos were developed in a certain potion to make the image a moving wizard photo. The Marauders Map - I think the bigger plot hole with the map is that Hogwarts is Unplottable so how were the 4 school boys about to create a map of it at all. Why did it's magic never seem to fade over time? There are other magical objects that loose their functionality over time or supposedly when the magic caster passes away. The Trace - Yes, this was a big plot hole through out the world building. The Two-Way Mirror - I was surprised Sirius did not explain what it was to Harry when giving it to him or Sirius and Lupin pull Harry aside [away from Molly] and explain it. I'm also surprised it took Sirius so long to come up with a means of he & Harry communicating directly. Surely, there are other methods. Sirius being innocent - I would have loved the addition in Rita's article about Harry's side of things to include a comment about Sirius being Harry's godfather & him being innocence. That Rita could interview him next or blackmail her into doing that interview as well. The Ministry was not aware that Sirius was an animagus. Peter Pettigrew, Voldemort, Lucius Malfoy & the death eaters were likely aware of it. Could you imagine a polyjuice transformation that would have let Sirius be Harry's classmate or a new transfer student?! He could have been watching over Harry much more closely the entire time. Neville & Dementors - Neville is one day older than Harry. His parents were tortured by the Lestrange's & Crouch Jr AFTER Voldemort went after baby Harry. Voldemort had heard the prophecy and while deliberating between which children born could have been the possible threat to himself, he choose the half-blood not the pureblood. Voldemort is highly unlikely to have explained himself to anyone. Snape told Dumbledore that the Dark Lord though it was Lily's son. [Harry also has a piece of someone else's soul residing in his body. Dementors were surely intrigued if they sensed it. However, could some of the memories that he has so clearly, but not Harry's memories but the fragment of soul?] The Portkey - I believe this was a 'first person to touch it' type of deal. The winner was supposed to be portkey-ed out of the maze. Like the Snitch with flesh memories, having a port-key object as the goal of the maze would ensure that the winner was easily distinguishable. Veritaserum - It is tricky to make & can be overcome by skilled wizards. Sirius not escaping sooner - He stated that he knew he was innocent and that that was not a happy thought, so the Dementors could not suck it from him, so he kept his sanity. He could not overcome the Dementors until he saw Peter Pettigrew on the Weasley's lottery winnings on the Daily Prophet front page when the minister of magic visited. He's at Hogwarts. It was like a fire burning within him, an obsession that even the Dementors could not extinguish form him. He was weak & very thin from withstanding years in Azkaban when he slipped through the bars and past the dementors to escape. It was the threat to Harry that motivated him, not proving his own innocence. Cho Chang - I read her character in OotP as she liked Harry but she wanted to know about Cedric dying than she was truly interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with Harry. The Madam Pudifoot's incident, "... did he mention me at all before he died?" bit.

The unbreakable vow works both ways. Voldy wanted to be able to sacrifice his pawns at any moment. Only Marauders could see other Marauders on the map. I’m sure there was a charm to make unlocking charms ineffective. A camera is not a connected device. The map was designed to be passed down to troublemakers and certainly helped them get into it, being semi-sentient, as evidenced by its insults towards Snape. Based on the relations of the characters in the story, it seems like none of them would every marry a muggle because they would have to throw their life away and do something they knew nothing about. They would also have to keep their entire past a secret the whole time, including while they are drunk. In the epilogue (and cursed child), there is no muggle character introduced as a wife or husband to one of the book's characters, so I find it pretty hard to believe that a quarter or a third are half-bloods.

funny fact, voldemort knew that people may betray you without you knowing (peter sold the potters) so, why not make sure nobody could become a spy for dumbledore? this is just a theory based on fict but, perhaps, the map has trouble with entities that have multiple names. for example, sirius black was also known as padfoot so, maybe, the map would show that name. in the case of scabbers, the name shown would be scabbers. it may also be that the map doesn't show non-humans (that includes animagi on their animal form) so the map would show peter only if he took his human form. neither theory is good but both have a point. while alohomora can open simple doors, it can't open all of them. besides, using regular locks may be for pure convenience. a regular lock is a lot better than having to cast an unlocking charm, enter a place, cast a locking charm. it is my understanding, I may be wrong, that muggle "technology" works fine. what doesn't work is electrical devices. mechanical devices, like old cameras, would work perfectly fine. given that they are never up to no good, it could be that they just found the password by pure sheer luck. it's still a poor excuse for a plothole. and yes, there's no excuse for the multiple inconsitencies with the trace. one excuse would be that Dobby managed to copy harry's "magical signature" causing his hoovering charm to look as if harry cast it. despite what some fans may claim to try to justify the inconsistencies, the charm tracks a wizard not a place or a wand. otherwise, in places with more than one underage magical it would be impossible to know who cast the magic. but an interesting thing is that the trace seems to be able to diferentiate between accidental magic, wand magic and wandless magic. harry not contacting with sirius isn't a plot hole. he just didn't know how. he tried to flo-call but kreatcher lied to harry and told him sirius wasn't there. harry didn't knew about the comunicating mirrors and, evidently, using his owl would be too slow to save sirius. Mcgonagalls age inconsistency comes from a single fact. fantastic beasts just sh*ts on any sort of canon. it's just there to get fans to pay more money. the story itself is so full of inconsistencies that there's no worth in considering it canon of anything. while polyjuice only lasts for an hour. barty crouch Jr. proved to all that you just need to drink a bit every fifty minutes to stay transformed. something Sirius could do easily. in fact, to make it even easier to hide himself, he could transform not on a member of the order but on a muggle. we never explore the idea but, what happens if you use two sets of DNA on the polyjuice? for example make a polyjuice potion using Molly Weasley and Nymphadora Tonks. it may also be that portkeys aren't always activated by a timer. maybe you can prepare them to be activated by touch. what I will never understand is why the cup was made into a reversible portkey but nobody made sure harry couldn't use it to escape. the ministry doesn't use veritaserum because it would make corruption near impossible. the official reason is that it's expensive and that strong wizards may be able to overcome it. the real reason is that some trials would become a nightmare for the corrupted politicians. just imagine what would happen if Malfloy was asked about the imperius defense while under veritaserum. no, no, no. that can't be allowed.

That's why they affect Harry so badly solely.

When Fred and George first discovered the map it was just a blank piece of parchment. After writing on it, and having an interesting conversation with it the map trusted them and revealed its true self knowing that the twins we're not going to do evil with the map. When they passed it on to Harry the map recognized him as the son of one of the previous owners. And as far as the twins not seeing Peter Pettigrew on the map, because Peter was one of the creators he would not have been shown on the map to the twins as Peter in his rat form, because of how the maps enchantments work only the original four creators and their descendants would have been able to see each other on the map

Snape and Mad Eye saw creators and descendants on the map so you're wrong there. But yeah, when Fred and George tried to use the paper to see what it was the map would have said something to them like when Snape first tries to reveal its secrets. They would have then been able to figure it out from there since the map and its creators would have wanted people like Fred and George to use it.

About the mirror: In fact, Harry never knew anything about the mirror before Sirius died. Sirius gave him the mirror as a Christmas present, all wraped up and with the explanation written on a note inside, and only told him to "use this if Snape is giving Harry a hard time", without any other explanation. Harry took it and put it away without checking it, very adamant to NOT use it, very adamant to not do anything that would cause Sirius to leave the house and risk being arrested, so it's very likely he forgot about it. The plot hole appears later, when Harry uses Umbridge's fireplace to talk to Sirius: why didn't Sirius use the opportunity to tell Harry to use the mirror for a longer and less risky talk ? After all, probably Sirius spent days and weeks with the Mirror in front of him, waiting to be called by Harry, so it's unlikely Sirius would have forgotten about it.

@8:42 That is a really good question. Isn't it brought up in the books and movies that the ingredients for Polyjuice are very hard to get and the creation of the potion is very hard to get right??? perhaps this is why he couldn't get his hands on any Poly Juice Potion???

For the Portkey one, I thought Barty Crouch Jr was the one who enchanted it to go to Voldemort instead of the outside of the maze. It's been a while since ive read the books so I might be mistaken. As for the trace, I always assumed that the order removed its from the members who were still under its effect, such as Harry.

The Sirius escape plan are with several issues. 1 Sirius never thought about it, since he wasn't aware that the dementors didn't notice animals. 2 He turned into an animal after he practise magic alot without a wand. Since this is hard to do, he trained for years to master it. perhaps one decade. 3 If you can't turn yourself into an animal without a wand, you might need one. Sirius never got a wand until he got away. How did he get a wand in the first place. Yes well good question, NEXT! I don't know, perhaps Dumbledore or some other friend helped him getting a wand, and perhaps came up with the idea. They smuggled the wand into Azkaban or flew with their broomsticks at his window, creating a small hole in the protected defence field and threw the wand through the window. Or they send him in pieces a wand, hiding piece by piece in the news paper undetected by the ministry. Perhaps with some ingredients (hidden in the same way as the wand) and a glass of water Sirius made a potion that could fix the wand for the most part, like Ronalds wand. Sirius got a wand that doesn't function well and is risky, but yes freedom is worth every risk. With sheer dumb luck the spell worked and Sirius turned into a dog and he was hopping threw the bars. The wand wasn't perfect.

1. The unbreakable vow was specific to get something done. Voldemort maybe used it, but it didn't seem to work to just "keep his followers loyal". 2. Peter Pettigrew could have been the name of a classmate of Ron's in his dormitory, to the twins 3. No, only Hermione knew the spell because she was a nerd. It was not taught to first years or anyone. 4. True. 5. The map talked to them, the way it talked to Snape. 6 or 7. In subsequent books, didn't the press take pictures of Harry at Hogwarts? It wasn't just Colin's camera. Might have been a magic cam. 8. Polyjuice potion is very hard/takes a long time to make or obtain and only lasts an hour (we had all of book 4 to show it wasn't easy to pull off). Also, who's to say he didn't sometimes. 25. Maybe Neville wasn't present when that happened

My theory of why Fred and George never noticed Pettigrew comes from simply taking the twins' behaviour into consideration. They got the map early on and had a lot of time to memorize passages and the layout of the castle. Supported by their claim to Harry that they know the whole map already. Then we should take a peek at the twins' relationship with Ron. They are shown to be rather uncaring about Ron's activities around the castle. So judging from this, I think that Fred and George simply did not care about Ron's whereabouts enough to look him up on the map. Most of their mischief required them to know the location of the teachers, the janitor and his cat, Peevees and the other ghosts. Why they would bother gawking at where Ron is when its simply not important for their adventures? Especially during prime mischief time when Ron would be in the dorms already with dozens of other names stacked. As for how Fred and George figured out the map's secret, I remember hearing a theory that perhaps the map itself gave little hints that ultimately led them to figuring the secret out.
