1. Clean scalp properly 2. Shampoo your ends at least x1 a month 3. Reduce hard water, get a soft water filter or hard water shampoo 4. Use correct amount of product for hair length/density 5. Correct hair products for hair texture 6. Get a gel cast. Layer don't mix products. Use enough product. Ensure gels and mousses are used. 7. Sectioning hair is a must. Important for defining, work from bottom to top 8. Spray bottle for re-wetting dry hair when styling 9. Gently scrunch hair to prevent frizz 10. Diffuse - can hover with the diffuser or gently scrunch 11. Prevent hunidity which causes frizz. Finish hair with silicone or/and hairspray 12. Tie hair before workout. Immediately after let curls down to reform after whilst damp 13. Hormones can affect hair 14. Maintenance - a simple one. Use products that work, remembering the shampoo tip. 15. Right haircut for curl and face shape.
My hair stylist told me time and time again that to get the look i want i should section style…a few years later I tried it… she was right (of course she was)
Help!! I'm a menopausal woman and hyperhidrosis across my scalp is a huge problem for me. Several times a day. Please if anyone has used scalp antiperspirant, please tell me about it? My double crown also makes my back of the head look completely flat. I have very fine hair, thank you hormones. With high porosity and coily curls. Any help from anyone will be taken gratefully. Many thanks in advance. Mell, I love you, you have single handedly helped my hair journey for the last four years. I love watching you grow into a beautiful, wonderful, enthusiastic, insightful and interestingly comedic woman. Keep being you ❤❤❤
I've made a point of shampooing back-to-front as well as applying styling products in that order. Plus swinging your hair a bit after combing/brushing to distribute product and before scrunching seems to help unstick it from my scalp. I also keep an eye out with a hand held mirror while diffusing so that if a section looks like it's too flat or frizzy, I can address it immediately (finger coiling, adding more water or product, etc). Hope this helps.
I used to have that problem as well... for me my hair is a lot more thick in the back and I asked my hairdresser to take some weight out of the back and layer it more and it's been curling beautifully!! not sure if it might be the same for you, but maybe worth thinking about/talking to your hairdresser about
I have very few bad hair days anymore due to all your great tips. I have been following you for a couple of years now and my curls have grown long and above all healthy. Thanks Mell!
Would you ever open your own salon? And teach more hair stylist about curly hair? I have had so many bad salon experiences. I don’t trust them anymore 🙈 your channel has taught me everything I know, but it would be nice to have someone tell me I’m doing everything right for my hair. Just some reassurance and to have someone else cut my hair 😂
Hi Mel, I have a bad hair day every day except wash day. It looks great on wash day, and I do all of the things like bonnet, conditioner, etc, but the next morning, I look like I've stuck my finger in a light socket, and it is frizzy all over. My hair is low-density and gray
Hey Mell! Helpful video! Can you please create a video for perimenopausal/menopausal women? I have been struggling with the hair changes (hair loss/texture changes etc.) for two years and I am sure I’m not the only one. Thanks for all your knowledge and advice!
Ever since my hairdresser helped me realize I have fine hair, and I've stopped using heavy and too much product, I've been having great hair days 🙌🏻. It takes time.
We got a filter for the shower head. It was $150 but we’ve got extra filters for a year, and it’s a game changer! My zits are gone, too. (My fine hair is coarse/wirey and porous. 🤔)
My hair turns frizzy the moment I scrunch out the crunch, no matter how gentle I am and no matter how much oil I put 😭 The moment the crunch is gone, my hair is a hot mess 😢
Mell! Thank you thank you thank you! I'm just a wavy / curly and I was happy to know I'm doing almost everything right but the scrunching! I tried your scrunching method last night with my newfound L'anza curl flex gel - my new grail, and what a difference! I was scrunching the ends instead scooping and scrunching the roots. Thanks again!!❤
Mel, I love, love love your videos! You have changed my "hair life"! I grew up the only curly girl in my family and never knew what to do. One thing that has also helped is the diffuser I got last year. Have you ever tried a "diffuser only" system? I use the Bellissima Italia Ceramic Diffuser Hair Dryer. For me, it is so much better than a blow dryer with diffuser attachment - which I always break! Thanks for all of your wisdom!
Bonus reason is probably for me. I just have not cut my hair in 2 years and I feel like I don't want to be near scissors🥺You are fabulous! Your videos are my hair bible and I love them🥰
Oh yes the humidity here in Florida 😅. I have to make sure my hair has a good gel cast for my fine hair. I can never soften the cast because it’s a frizzy mess by day 2 and doesn’t last as long if I use no oil.
WOW😍Looking Xtra gorgeous with your beautiful glowing golden tan!!! Total perfection, from your tan, makeup, hair color and curls!!! I need new products!! Curls aren't popping like they should!!!
Thanks for all the compliments, I’m blushing!! Nothing like a golden tan, complimented by my golden color! Remember, anytime the hair isn’t acting right… #1 or #15 - clarify / CUT!
Once I realized that despite having coarse hair, it does NOT like conditioner nor cream products.. So now, I don't feel bad about skipping a deep conditioner, using a rinse out and then just using gel (with a heat protectant spray) on most days, my hair is LOVING the curly life. However, I will use a leeeeetle bit of cream, if I have been swimming and in the sun for weeks on end.. Then I'll add in a cream, but oh so little, does help. But pretty soon, the weather will change again and I'll have to figure it all out again. LOL!!! But if you can embrace the inconsistency that curly hair truly is, and accept that frizz can be your friend (volume for DAYS) then you life becomes SO much easier....
I think the right haircut is important too, but getting a good haircut with super thick curls in Kansas City is impossible. I’m currently letting my grey hair grow out too. I basically keep my hair in an updo. Thanks so much for your videos, you hair and makeup looks beautiful 🤩.
29:23 thank you for everything I really appreciate especially this point …sometimes we need to stop focus to every details in our hair or body and just let it …we’ll make it good then
I have thick, coarse, hair in a short-bob, and going all out with gel has been the game changer. My hair, despite being wavy (2b/2c), needs a STRONG gel. We're talking Giovanni L.A. Hold Styling Gel or Curlsmith In-Shower Style Fixer Curly Hair Gel type stuff aaaand a light hairspray. I used to always use too little but now I section my hair and brush it through plus when I'm ready to diffuse I still add a light coating of hair spray (Rusk W8less). Meanwhile my 3a, fine-haired kid adds a small-to-moderate amount of curl cream and ...done! After all that product, a "roots to tips" cleaning is a great idea for my monthly use of hard water shampoo (Malibu C)! I try so hard not to dry out my ends that I might be going overboard - thanks Mel! The back of my hair thanks you too!
My problem is i tend to diffuse my hair to 70% dry because i find it too long, annoying , and begin to sweat. Im looking for a faster blow drier without having to spend $300. Thans, Mel, love your advise❤
Would you please do a video on dealing with curly/wavy gray hair? My hair is mostly salt and pepper, but the front hairline is white and has lost almost all of its curl. I’m struggling with it every day. Finger curls don’t work. I’m ready to break out a curling iron 😱🤯. Thanks!!
Could you please do an in-depth educational video on fairy knots. How to prevent them, best ways to treat them etc. Any tips will be helpful. Thank you ❤
I love this makeup! Can we have a tutorial? I know it’s not your usual content but I can’t stop staring! Subtle yet a the perfect little bit of sexiness
I've immigrated from South Africa to the Netherlands. I lost hair due to stress... It has started to grow back. I'm very grateful for the new hair but... it frizzes terribly. It rains for weeks, nay months on end! 😢 My curl pattern also changed. I'm on the struggle bus.
Mell, bad hair days!?! 🤔 Nope, don’t believe it. I say mission impossible, you cannot possibly have experience the burden! Your hair is always too fabulous! ☝🏻😂❤️
This is off topic and so hope it doesn't sound creepy/stalkery.. I think you're one of the most beautiful humans I've ever seen and you have the loveliest, liveliest spirit ☺️. If you don't have one, you really should consider having a professional portrait done. I could draw you as a nice stick figure but I'm thinking you should have better 😂.
I would be so honoured to have my stick figure drawn by you. This was the sweetest comment thank you so much for risking coming across creepy/stalkery, it is very welcomed❤️❤️❤️
Girllll you make me laugh!!! So my hair is very thin, and probably at like my shoulder blades length. I used to wash my hair everyday up until just recently. I blow dry and diffuse every day, whether or not I actually wash my hair because it gets wet in the shower. Could the constant heat be causing my hair to thin? I do use a leave in conditioner that includes heat protection everyday.
I’ve always wondered if an expensive diffuser really makes a difference or if I should keep using my Conair that i got back in the early 2000s. If my hair can get better, I will totally invest but if it’s just my hair not responding well to diffusers, period, then I want to save my money. 😆
Another great video! So I'm growing my highlights out. So half my hair is all new growth & half of it is high porosity. So what do I use? A bond-building shampoo and conditioner or regular? And what is your fav/go-to regular shampoo and conditioner both drugstore & high-end? Your high ending is probably Aveda Please & thanks in advance ❤❤❤
How can I wear my curls when I want them out of my face (for cooking etc)? You’ve said in a previous video that putting your hair in a bun loosens the curls. Would you recommend putting it in a claw clip?
I walk my grandchildren to and from school here in Canada. I need to keep warm. What can I wear on my head to keep me warm, keep the snow and rain off my hair and keep my wavy curly hair intact? Thank you!
Love the tips and your humor is so good 🤣 had a good laugh Can you maybe touch up on the sulfate topic again 😇 , is there any new scientific changes/better ways or so 🤓📖🔬
I usually have bad hair days when: 1. Too much products on my hair; 2. Sleeping without my satin bonnet; 3. Letting my hair dry while being tied up; The last one doesn't happen that often, but the other two are my main issues 😂
Hey Mel, I know you’re a Dyson girl but have you ever tried other hairdryers like the Laifen, etc. I think that would be a great video. I need a new hairdryer but I can’t afford a Dyson. The Laifen is more in my price range but I was wondering what you thought about it
Hi. I used to watch you ALL the time. Then I buzzed my my hair. That was 2 1/2 years ago. I actually love my hair buzzed, but I have recently started thinking about growing it out. That thought alone is enough to keep me buzzing. Does the Mighty Mel have any tips for growing out buzzed hairs? 😬
Enjoy the process. Have SO much fun. If your goal is to grow quickly, then I would avoid colouring but wash your hair frequently really focussing on your scalp care. make sure your diet it protein and nutrient rich, and enjoy fun styles like finger waves and slick styles, maybe blowouts (using heat protection) while it’s short. It’ll grow back in no time. Glad to have you back, thanks for watching 🫶🫶🫶
Hi Mel. My hair is a little similar to yours, high porosity and thin. I use not your mother‘s curl products to wash and condition my hair but I noticed that my hair is looking a little too greasy and it’s weighing down. Maybe over hydrated not sure. Can you please recommend a shampoo and conditioner for me my description of my hair type please?
I live in Florida where when you open the door at 630 am the humidity just smacks you. I do use gel and hairspray. And keep a cast. But that does not seem to work. By the time i get home from work my hair looks flat. 😂 I cant use the oil I feel like it makes my hair frizz 🤔
I need help with wet frizz. Is it build up on my hair? I want to go to a curly hair specialist but not in the budget right now. When I first started my curly hair journey I had great wash and gos and my hair looked super healthy, now it just lacks luster some days. I know there’s areas I’m slacking but I think I need new products to try lol
Thanks for the video Mell and Amanda. Happy Texture Thursday. I just had to laugh. Woman make up 51% of the population but yet they never seem to think studying womens health is needed. So many conditions can impact our hair but you hear more about them from your stylist rather then your health care provider. Also. Loved the Olympics.
Mel I discovered Ghost Oil from watching you (which I adore) but I am also protein sensitive. Do you know of any serum as good that does not contain protein? I have tried color wow w/ the glitter and kerastase and various non silicone oils but none compare.
I feel you might not always think of the ladies like me who are 50…that follow you and love you and need extra help because grey hair isn’t the same as normal hair plus I have to be blonde I get my highlights/ low lights every 4 to six months with the help of temp hair spray colour or I’d need to go almost every month that would be more damaging with blonde you don’t see the greys asap lol what other product can I use to hide my greys before my next hair appointment I use the L’Oreal hair spray colour wish I didn’t 😢help regardless I get a lot of compliments on my wavy hair I’ve learned a lot from you thanks 😢❤
I need help and guidance with the front of my daughters hair. It's like her curl pattern is just gone. It's always dry and frizzy and I just really need some guidance from a curl pro.
I have no option to skip wash days becasue I train MMA every day. I need to shower every night and have super fine wavy hair. I do not go to bed with wet hair yet I always wake up with a crazy head of hair that looks like I escaped from some asylum. I have tried everything (silk bonnet, pineapple, plopping, extra product, less product...) do I just need to give up on the idea of having nice wavy hair if I cannot redo it in the morning?
I live in a desert with no humidity and work construction, then to workout I swim in a chlorinated pool. I wash my hair a lot which means I don't do my hair any favors. Do you have tips for my hair other than lifestyle changes? P.S. my hair has medium porosity with wavy/curly mix
Get a swim cap! They even have them now specifically made for natural hair so that there's a lot of space in there and you're not just crushing your curls. Then you don't have to rewash your hair every single time you swim.
I have a problem where the top of my head dries out so fast and doesn’t hold a curl. No matter how much I wet and add product, my ringlets never form up. It will try to curl them the strands well all separate from each other. Someone told me it was “scab” hair. Idk what to do because my bottom half of my hair looks beautiful. It’s literally just the top
Can you do a video about curls going flat? I’m a 2C/3A wavy girl, and I can get the curls popping with my style routine, but without fail after a couple of hours, I’ve lost half the curl and by the end of the day it’s more 2A waves that look unattractive. It’s so defeating and doesn’t feel worth the effort to get the curls.
As you havent got any response: Do you know what your hair looks like without styling? That is your hair pattern. 2c can be styled to optimize the curls, which is ok, but will flatten out with time, while more curly hair tend to shrink over time. There is nothing wrong with that. If your hair is more curly without products, you might be using products which are too heavy. Good luck!
I have a question so we have water softener but sometimes parts of my curls are crunchy and my scalp feels dry but we have a water softener so what do I do?
I’d like to know how to fix when one section is flatter than the other. Also how to deal with cowlicks in the front. I have a curl that will form in the center of my forehead frequently.
I have a question Mell, “I have seen some videos of about 5 years back and your curl seems tighter than it is now. Is that because of products you used / use or was your hair in a different condition back then?” I’m asking because my curl is similar to the curl you had in your videos of 5 years ago. I love how your curls are full, bouncy and hang loose. So, is the difference the products or a forget hair routine over the years?
She did a video on this a while back. She mentioned that curl patterns can just change in general over time due to age, hormones, greying, etc. Mine's changed over the last 5 years myself by actually getting a bit tighter, but my mom who also curls has gotten less tight as she's gotten older.
