A raging river with rushing water is obviously dangerous. But even calm, serene, slow-moving rivers can be dangerous. You can’t always judge a river by the surface of its water. Some of the most dangerous rivers in the world look relatively harmless on the surface. But aggressive reptiles, toxic waters, hidden tunnels, or violent undercurrents, the rivers in this video all have one thing in common - they’re deadly. So join us for today's video, as we take a look at the Top 15 Most Dangerous Rivers in the World.

a few years ago I was boating on the Mississippi River with my dad, I never realize how strong the current was until we were on the water, going against the current at full speed & still moving backwards in the boat. one of the scariest moments of my life. Luckily we made it back to our campsite dry & safe.

And depending on what country you're in, the Amazon can also be home to some less than savory anti-government types who aren't particularly fond of foreigners (especially Americans). You also have uncontacted indigenous tribes who rely on the river, though I'm more afraid for them than of them, since even the remotest contact with an outsider could infect them with illnesses to which they have no immunity.

I went to Thailand for a holiday a few years ago & i (being an Aussie) was absolutely shocked that the people that live literally in a shack on the river & used the river as the local garbo tip. They'd throw their garbage straight out the window into the water. Similarly the place we stayed absolutely reeked & there was rubbish all over the joint. Same deal, they'd throw their rubbish straight on to the street. A friend i went with tried to make the excuse it was so dirty coz they don't have garbo's to collect the rubbish like in any other normal country. Another of our mates said, i don't care if they have garbo's or not but just throwing garbage all over the joint is dirty as i said reeked, she said can't they actually throw their rubbish in a bin or plastic bag? No wonder they're very much a third world country.

The irony is, the ancient people used to dig holes behind their house and buried their trash in it or burnt the trash in that hole. The rivers were used as main transportation and water source for bathing and house hold used so it was generally clean. However as open burning is considered as a pollution in modern times, they've ditched that practice and simply throwing their trash in the river instead, since they didn't use the river like they did in the past. Sad eh. They should be allowed to burn their trash if their government cannot provide garbage collector for their villages. And they should be using incinerator like in Japan for their trash instead of using landfill.

Interestingly, the worst bit of the Aire is quite far away from the worst stretch of the Wharfe, at the Castleford weirs.
