I've been carrying bolt cutters and zip ties for about 14 years in my go bag. If you chop through chain link, you can always zip tie back together and from a distance you can't tell that it has been cut. Tooth picks or dental picks are also something that gets overlooked too! Just my .02

I've worked in the Pet food industry, actually manufacturing dry dog/cat foods. We had to hold human food standards in our facility because of the prospect of "children" eating our food. I would also note that in times of famine, people wouldn't be afraid to eat pet foods. Lastly, most dry kibble dog food is so similar to certain types of human food that most people would be shocked.

I would add a bag of peat moss (if you have the space). Not a subject people like to talk about but it makes a good cover material in a grid down, make shift toilet situation. I lived off grid for 1-1/2 years and peat moss broke down in a compost pile faster than sawdust bedding (and no smell). Although it's not a glamorous read, I also recommend the book The Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins. Along with that, I would recommend having the 5-gallon bucket with the snap on toilet seat.

Those are all good things to have. I would store for each household member over age 12 years: one small, disposable butane lighter; one pocket size AM/FM radio + a cheap set of ear buds and extra batteries for it; one decent quality pocketknife; one head lamp + extra batteries for it; one water bottle sling; at least $100 in $5 to $20 bills and a pair of padded, wool blend, hiking socks. For anyone with a boat trailer, horse trailer or RV trailer -- put a hitch lock on it so thieves cannot just connect it to their truck hitch and drive away. And if that trailer is dual axel, get a heavy-duty chain and sturdy lock and chain together the two trailer wheels that are on the same side. If you have to bugout with a trailer loaded with emergency supplies and camping gear, chaining two wheels together can make it a lot harder for thieves to steal the whole trailer from a motel parking or a highway rest stop if you have unhitched to run some errands.

Have all these always have just in living not prepping. Just a heads up the reason landline phones work when power is down is because your phone people send out generators to keep them online. Commercial electrician, 30 years in the field. If people understood how fragile our infrastructure is, I think they would prep more. Most all of our infrastructure is fragile. Landlines are an awesome backup to cell. Most land line relay points also have ups backup until generators are hooked up.

@@whiskeytangofoxtrot8041 yes battery back up. I’ve learned so much from my husband. He is also a Ham Radio Operator. I’m very grateful. The only downside would be companies that don’t keep things in top condition. So much is on a downhill slide. Best to keep landlines because if the cells do go down people don’t know what it is like to not be able to communicate. It will be like the old days running to your neighbors to make a call.

A few additional items" clothespins, clothesline, matches (strike on box & strike anywhere), extra batteries (all sizes), wax for canning and making candles, a MIX of salt (plain, iodized, canning, & ice cream), cheap butane lighters, WORK gloves, twine, bailing wire, electrical tape, duct tape (much), save grocery bags for multiple uses, sewing needles & thread, extra fabric of various types, and of course, too many more to list here.
@crazysquirrel9425

cordage can be used as a clothesline. And other things. You can waterproof matches simply by dipping them ONCE in melted candle wax. Due to hazmat BS, it is almost impossible to get strike anywhere matches. You might want to get some large contractor or drum liner bags. Thicker the better. Not only can they last for years, you can make a tent or poncho out of them. Use them to carry small kindling, water, etc. People need to carry around a large variety of heirloom food seeds. A canvas or sail needle is a good idea to have too. Leather stitching needle. Both fixed and lock blade knives. Some antibiotic ointment in case of wounds. And for the ladies, menstrual sponges (several). Compressed toilet paper pills. Bug out survival shovel (not a cheap one either). Solar powered lights (solar to recharge the lights - Walmart sells those for a few bucks - solar yard lights you jab in the ground). A twig stove and alcohol stove. Zip lock freezer baggies. Fill some with charcoal briquets to use in a pinch. Fill with water and freeze if you can - makes an ice pack. Also keeps things dry. I would suggest waterproof paper topographical maps but extremely hard to get and cost a small fortune for them. Inflatable pillow. Blanket. Bug spray.
@CandC_Farms
@CandC_Farms 2 года назад
For sewing, I have attached a sail needle to each of my survival knives’ sheaths with duct tape. Paracord gut is coarse, but it works well to stitch up a pack of whatever. Another stitching tool is a “Speedy Stitcher” they work well on gear and leather goods. Another good prep I keep in my vehicles along with the bolt cutters are a length of chain and padlocks. I may want in and to keep people from coming in behind me.

If your phone runs through your router/wifi like mine does from the cable company a landline will not work unless you have a battery back up for the router. When we first switched over to the cable company the router had a battery backup. When that quit working they replaced it but there was no battery in it. They said they quit sending out the battery because a majority of their customers didn't have a landline. (They were just being cheap.) I could have bought one from them at the time for $60 but didn't. I still have a landline but in the event of a power outage, it doesn't work.

Electrician's scissors(brands like Clauss,klein,wiss)are my favorite all-purpose scissors, I worked in the telecom industry and used these daily but most workers would throw away the scissors every month or so -I never did because one of the old-timers showed me a nifty trick by hitting the screw (not on the head -the other side) a few times with a hammer it tightens them back up and they work like new. I use these like one would use EMT trauma shears but I think the electrician's scissors are more sturdy and they stay sharp for a very long time, if you find them used for a bargain price or even in the garbage it is not hard to refurbish them hehe

This is probably the first prepping video I've ever watched where I was pretty much squared away. 😃 A manual peculation coffee pot, and a camp stove, was one of my first preps like 15 years ago. I _always_ prep for small comforts with the target of going a few days because that actually does happen to everyone eventually. Nothing sucks more than firing up your emergency heaters or generator without a cup of the black stuff waiting. ☕ The only one I hadn't considered was bug spray (because I hate the stuff, but the alternative _is_ worse) and a couple of clicks just fixed that. No pets to feed and no need of a land line because there's a firehouse in my back yard (literally line of sight, 100 yards away). If they lose coms, a landline phone wouldn't help me either. Oh... And as a guy who is also a size 15 shoe wearer, I don't worry about shoe-goo, I just have plenty of extra shoes. I think I have 5 new pairs of safety toe walking shoes stocked up by catching them on sale and leveraging my day job buying some here and there.

I already have all of these covered, and have been stocking most of them since 2020, and others are just common sense. Most important for me is Dog food. He has 6 months on site at all times. I asked my Vet (Prepper as well) how to store it. He said to keep it in a freezer, and I label them by number on which to rotate out first. Most sites will give you a discount if you do their auto ship. If you have a flat, you need a simple plug kit as well. Duct tape as well, the do everything stuff! French press FTW!

Damn! That’s a lot of freezers and freezer space! Let alone the electric bill for said freezers! My dogs are between 170-200 lbs! That’s a HUGE amount of dog food to store. Not saying I wouldn’t do it but, damn! I guess that’s one good part of living up north, we can store it outside in a bin in the freezing weather for at least five to six months.

@@msgottaneedtoknow I’ve got 3 dogs, I keep sacks of dry food in plastic 55 gallon drums, and canned food to mix with it, sometimes a little milk... powdered milk in preps. These dogs are spoiled, but in SHTF they will eat if they get hungry enough. This week I bought 10 bags of rawhide chew bones for them, 15 to a pack (good deal at Sam’s club). At 1 a week that’s 50 weeks.

We give our dogs a pig-twist/ aka Oinkies 1 per day plus 1 of several extra treats. The prices have gone up 30%. I try to avoid the raw hide treats. Some times a smoked bone we get for them. We keep them on a brand they like and stay healthy on while eating, $58 per bag x 2 a month. Big boys @125lb and 140lb each. Both can scale a 6' fence with ease if they want to. The plus side is they both love beans and rice, just plain lol. I have tried them on it and they like it better then their food. I have thought about switching how I feed them. Both love veggies and fruits, though one is more of a foodie than the other who will eat anything you eat. That also is to keep in mind that some foods we eat are bad for our dogs. So check first before feeding some foods to your companion. Yes our pups are spoiled, they are my paparazzi lol

Only one that might be a toss up is the land line phone, especially dependent on where you live. In rural areas, landlines are mostly still using the old 48V pots systems. In urban areas, many phone systems are now running over IP with IP exchanges to pots. Those connections won't work if the grid is down as they are running either over fiber, cable, or DSL connections before converting back over at an exchange station.

Have all these always have just in living not prepping. Just a heads up the reason landline phones work when power is down is because your phone people send out generators to keep them online. My husband has this as a part of his work for 25 yrs. Also he keeps a landline for us because he said if people knew how fragile the cell /internet is they’d be shocked. Landlines will work when cells crash. Great video! 👍🏼
@davidhawkins847
@davidhawkins847 2 года назад
Land lines are less fragile but can be just as vulnerable. A lot of analog stuff is not being supported and there is one point of failure for landlines. The CO. If it runs out of battery or the generators go down, or worse the whole building, entire sections or service will be down. Admittedly the carriers are probably the most prepared for keeping their services up.

Many of the vehicles sold now don't come with spare tires or if they do, a very minimal tire. Also, make sure your jack works. So many are barely able to lift the vehicle high enough to get the tire off and only when placed in specific spots. Trucks are notorious for this issue. If you can't get the jack directly under the axle or A-arm the suspension flexes too much to get the hub high enough to get an inflated tire on.

Therefore it fits into a pack, etc and not only that, it makes better coffee due to its method of use (less acid/bitterness). You can buy filter screens for it so you don't have to deal with the paper filters if you don't want and you can even store some coffee grounds inside it.

Well said on the fire extinguishers. In a grid down the fire trucks might completely stop showing up, and fire is already a HUGE cause of destruction in the society. (the fact that we have an entire emergency service dedicated to it should be a clue.) My personal philosophy is have enough for you, have enough so if you use them, you still have spares, and if you live in an apartment, make sure you have enough to put out a fire in a neighbouring property too. You might not even like your neighbour, but if his apartment burns down, its taking yours with it.

Good advice, but I have a caveat about the Land-Line advice. I've seen a true landline functioning properly during a disaster, after hurricane Hugo walloped us back in '89. But nowadays, what is often assumed to be a "landline" or is touted as a "landline" by the phone companies is nothing but an phone-like device connected to the internet, and I assume that if there is a grid-down situation then that also implies internet is down as well.
