I am just starting to learn Turkish. The pronunciation of some Turkish words I find very difficult and confusing. One example that I hear a lot is “bir” meaning one. Phonetically it should be pronounced as in the English “beer” or as in the Turkish “biro” , but Turkish speakers add an “s” sound so that you feel it should be written “birs” or even an English “sh” sound. I can’t work out how to make that sound in my mouth! Help!

no you actually should read it as the 'beer' in english. it is more similar. we don't add anything to the end of the word
@sandrew255
@sandrew255 3 года назад
@@jane-il3qs trust me, every Turkish person I have heard has added an s sound to the end of bir. I have seen discussions elsewhere about this too. When a British person says beer their tongue remains fully down. I think Turkish people saying bir must lift their tongue to their upper palate whilst expelling air so a hissing sound is produced. Many, many turks deny they make this sound, but I hear it constantly.
@sandrew255
@sandrew255 3 года назад
@@jane-il3qs on the plus side, my Turkish is improving and I am starting to really get to grips with the vowel sounds too, which gave me a lot of problems early on. Eg the difference between I and ö, and u and ü. Just today I fully understood front and back vowels, so vowel harmony makes sense. Like everything, it’s just practice. As an adult it’s natural to want to gain some fluency quickly, but you have to walk before you can run. I feel like I’m about 3 years old in Turkish lol.
