I bet catch, photo, release is exciting with our VA monsters I agree with your philosophy about using time wisely - the other day I wasn't struggling to pattern fish on a heavily pressured impoundment in northern VA - I noticed baitfish activity in two areas of the lake and the second time a happened to be eating lunch, so I drifted around following this school of minnows (1-2inch, silver or transparent, large schools near surface) and just observing.. I was able to put together a pattern after realizing the bass were corralling baitfish and gorging on them because I think our recent storms have washed these small fish out into the open (we've had a full week+ of fronts rolling through with wind and some rain - sun came out, but another storm was rolling in that afternoon.. I think all the fish must have been out feeding up while weather was calm. I ended up landing my first walleye off a point by the deepest part of the lake, then headed to a mid-lake point and found more schools of baitfish trapped in a hidden cove (grass growth made up the "trap" with one small exit, but it isn't visible above water and I've never noticed it - I happened to see the school of baitfish causing surface activity in circles, trying to find a way out, for at least 10 min before I started slow rolling an underspin and small keitech under the school and plucked off multiple 2lb-3lb bass within 20 min I saw maybe 10 others kayaks on this small impoundment and zero other catches that day. Observation and using your brain and tools you have available makes all the difference in the world. I've struggled on that lake for years - I have probably 500 hours there at least, maybe 1000
@tragikk03
@tragikk03 Год назад
my first snakehead ever was during a NVKBA (local kbf affiliate) bass tourney on a creek that holds world-record class snakehead - I was super excited, had wanted to catch snakehead since I'm a Potomac river local and have seen guys chasing them since before they were still the "super predator dangerous invader" VA biologist thought they would be... Had it on the lip grippers and held it out over the port side to see its' full length (I couldn't get it high enough held in front of me over the yak).. I estimate conservatively around 10-12lbs, but I'm 6'4" and, assuming you're 6'+ and that fish you weighed is the size I'm imagining it relative to you and your hobie.. Anyways, it shook, like they do, and I didn't know how much stronger than largies they are... Grippers slipped out of my hand before I got a weight and I watched that fish slowly swim under my yak, white rapala lip grippers still hanging there like a lip piercing, lol. If it wasn't a bass tourney that I was in the running to win, I would have been mad that day. BTW, VA produced both the last 2 Northern Snakehead world records.. 17lbs 6oz in 2017 and 19lbs 5oz a few years after that (2019). There's no doubt been 20+lb fish caught or killed by bow fishermen - they just haven't been submitted or didn't quality for some technical rule the angler overlooked.. All other records come from asia. Our Northerns out-grow Florida's Great Snakehead.
@KambotroutFishing
@KambotroutFishing Год назад
@@tragikk03 Great description of the importance to attention to detail and observation when on the water brother. Glad it paid off for you on that pressured impoundment. I have an idea which it may be, but I won't name it here. The explosive power of Snakeheads are one reason I love fishing for them, especially by kayak. Trying to control or at least handle them effectively is always a challenge, and I love that challenge. You been putting floats on your lip grippers since that big one with the lip piercing?
@tragikk03
@tragikk03 Год назад
@KambotroutFishing No floats, but I have the gripper tethered to my seat frame with 550 parachord tied with 4-loop clinch knots on each end - parachord doesn't slip in my experience. Ain't no kill like overkill lol I also have a Donkey Leash tethered to the seat frame as well for redundancy that I haven't used, yet. I couldn't help but laugh at that giant dropping into the water, leveling out, then slowly cruising away. You know how some big fish take their time leaving.. lol Have you ever heard Steven Rinella's "theory of fun"? He got it from some dudes he knew, and I think they're on to something.
@KambotroutFishing
@KambotroutFishing Год назад
@@tragikk03 that story of yours with the big fish reminds me of the time I had a roughly 19lb Snakehead escape my grips and fall into the water, but land on an exposed tree stump. He sat there for a moment gathering himself, then flipped out again and extricated his head from the stump. Haunts me to this day I never got a weight on that one. I’m not familiar with Steven Rinella, but after a quick google search, I’m gonna check him out. Found a video on life lessons from hunting with him. Thanks for the recommendation.

how do you work the frog for snakehead? and does color matter?
@KambotroutFishing
@KambotroutFishing Год назад
Depends on the structure and mood of the fish. Over large grass mats and pad fields, I’ll often slow reel a Teckel Honker to move the fish, then slow down once they’re waking on it. In tighter cover, I’ll usually work it more slowly, letting it settle for 10-15 seconds before twitching it 5-10 inches, then rest again for 10 seconds (rinse and repeat all the way in). Color matters some days and doesn’t on others, but I’m partial to white, red, and black. You might be interested in this video here. You let them go? I thought we had to kill snakehead….
@KambotroutFishing
@KambotroutFishing 7 месяцев назад
The short answer is no, we aren’t legally required to kill them. The longer answer is below: Legal requirements on Snakehead vary by state, but in most cases, you’re allowed to release them immediately after catching them back into the waters in which you caught them. That’s the case in MD, DE, and VA (this was in MD). It’s usually only illegal to possess live snakehead or to transport live snakehead (which makes good sense in my opinion). I often harvest them, but it usually depends on whether or not I have room in the freezer or know someone who wants them. They’re the best tasting fish in freshwater and have an excellent meat to body ratio. They’re also easy to filet, so if I need meat or know someone who does, I’ll often keep them. With that said, I’ll release them if I don’t have a need to harvest. Many people take an issue with this because they’re labeled as an invasive species, and most fisheries managers do highly encourage their harvest. The peer-reviewed and published science thus far has not shown invasive impact. I’ve actually done an interview series with John Odenkirk, a VDGIF fisheries biologist, in which we review the most recent science and legal requirements on the species (link below if you’re interested). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lceYaOj8P9M.html Still, invasive impact sometimes takes several decades to manifest, so if someone does harvest intensely, I understand their position. My personal opinion is that the degree of their impact will depend on the waters involved. In uniformly shallow waters with no established large predatory species (like Blackwater), they’ll likely have more of an impact (though I do think their impact is overblown and the snakehead scapegoated for our own impact). In deeper waters though, they’ll likely have less of an impact, especially when those deeper waters have large, established predatory fish. For me, they’re an admirable species, excellent parents, and incredible sportfish. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Just starting to hunt these bad boyz. How often are SH in open water as opposed to around structure?
@KambotroutFishing
@KambotroutFishing 11 месяцев назад
It depends on the structure. If you mean open water without structure, it’s rare and usually occurs during the colder months. In the warmer months, snakehead will usually relate to structure, especially underwater vegetation like hydrilla.

Lol, some do and some don’t. I caught some this weekend that fought like Bullseye, but by and large, the northerns def don’t fight like the bullseyes.

What part of water is this in VA?
@KambotroutFishing

Fairly well known creek on VA side, Potomac trib, public launch (with fee), frequent site of tourneys. I don’t directly name drop waters though.

That string attached to the bump board is so you dont drop it in the drink. Smh. Prep, maintenance, and organization would really take your game to the next level. Also you need to angle your rear rod holders back so you stop hitting them.

Why the fish always gotta bite when you're trying to have a conversation?

The cut scenes in this one are pretty awesome, bro. Nice work! Also... The honker. Live by the flashy feet, die by the flashy feet. Those things draw SO MANY strikes, but they can be fickle when it comes to the hookset.
@KambotroutFishing

Smaller sneks are a PAIN to hook with the Honker. Larger sneks aren’t as bad, but even then, you gotta be on your game and I prefer to tweak the hooks slightly for easier hooksets.

I don’t release all I catch. I often harvest, but I also see a lot of value in the species and admire them in many ways, especially in how they care for their young.

@@KambotroutFishing it’s a weird place I’m an avid bass fisherman and I want to respect the sport but they are invasive. Maybe just harvest the larger ones
